Thanks for the heads up about the Amazon two for three sale. Costs average out to about 21 dollars a movie, three dollars more per title than Barnes and Noble, which is still very worth it.

These are a few of the only newer releases I couldn't find in the sale:

Holiday, Bamboozled, The Rohmer boxset, The Cameraman and Le Petit Soldat.

Understandable, but real bummer if true.

On the other hand, I won't feel quite as bad about having loaded up on titles from all the other sales happening during this time.

I wonder how much of that extended Criterion.com 30% off sale was meant to offset a cancelled B&N sale? Perhaps they knew...

Still holding out some hope for it. Will miss the browse!

I am, too. Assuming that the sale was successful for both B&N and Criterion (given all the years that it has happened), it would make sense to try one in August or September as they try to entice people back into the stores. Here's hoping we don't have to wait until November.

To throw more gas on the fire, Arrow is now releasing Cinema Paradiso on UHD soon. I wonder if an arthouse film on 4K will sell....hmmmmm...
CC has been lapped by the field again. Who would of thunk putting a 4K restoration on the proper disc...That's a crazy concept....

I wonder if Criterion’s other hesitation is how people threw a fit over dual format. Maybe they don’t want to do another dual format release.

I don't know what Criterion's sales numbers are for dvd, but they still fully support it. And that is the first problem. IMO, they will never carry all 3 formats, so UHD is on hold till they give up on dvd editions. I hope I am very wrong. I assume they have so many diehards that only buy dvd's from them, so they still print them. They also make a killing at $20+ a pop for those dvd editions. To lose that edition, that probably sells fairly well, would be silly of them financially. They are still in the past and frankly, I don't think mind it either. Again, I hope I am wrong, but with all these releases, especially The Elephant Man, already having a 4K release, it just doesn't make sense. Maybe they don't want to pony up for the license, etc. Either way, they are not helping the blu and UHD markets by still printing dvd's. But profit wins out in the end.

Watched about an hour of Ikiru last night.

When Takashi Shimura sings Life is Brief, it gets me every time.

I don’t care what anyone says...getting old is a nightmare.

I think a lot of people are quite happy with DVD. I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion would be farther ahead keeping DVD and replacing the Blu-ray releases with 4k UHD. I am sure UHD sales would cut into Blu sales, so Criterion could sell DVD to the person who wants a basic release and UHD to those who want the best version. I know it doesn't sound intuitive, but I really think it would work.

Heads up on the Amazon sale. Barnes and Noble may be correct about lack of product availability for their sale. Just about every title I needed from the Amazon sale was out of stock with "available in 1-4 months" noted. They still have some titles available, just not the ones I need.

Do the other physical media boutique labels make a lot of their profits from DVDs as well?

Kino has mentioned that several of their releases, including some of their most popular ones, sell more on DVD than on Blu-ray.

I think you seriously overestimate the number of people who have gone from Blu-Ray to UHD. Many of us have not yet gone that route.

In that case maybe they should have had it after we found out B&N wasn’t doing their sale.

I have a wishlist ready as soon as someone does a sale LOL. And no luck with my list from the Amazon Buy 3 for 2. I can wait though. Spent too much the past couple months.

That’s the case for me. I use a 2K projector and I’m happy, I came late to Blu-ray and have a large collection now... I’m just fine not going to UHD/HDR yet.

If Criterion is still getting that much DVD business, maybe they can’t actually financially stop releasing them. I’m sure that those in the 4K camp feel the same way about us non-adopters as those of us in the Blu-ray camp who shake our heads at the DVD buyers.

It usually doesn’t bother me except when modern HD-produced titles (mostly TV shows but some movies as well) are released only on DVD - yes, I’m looking at you Fox.

I'll be honest, most of my family and friends do not buy Blu-Ray's. Even my parents, for whom I bought a Blu-Ray player, will usually buy the DVD. Many people don't care about the benefits of Blu-Ray. And many of them don't have the screen size needed, or sit the proper distance from their screen, to reveal the benefits of Blu-Ray, let alone UHD. That's just the way it is, and I've come to accept that.

Just a thought, but in regards to the sale being delayed, the Varda box set releases on August 11th, and their last 3 or 4 big sets like that (Olymic, Godzilla, Bergman) have all been timed to be included in the B&N sales. When the release date for Varda was announced I wondered why they'd street it so close but just after the expected sale. I know it's just hoping, but maybe?
