Regardless of whether the B+N sale happens or not (i.e most likely the latter), I have to pick up Husbands next month! That is a must!

However, as they readily admitted, this may change - as you were effectively told when you contacted "barns" yourself.
To be fair, they're going to say that. All retail employees are not allowed to tell you when something is going on sale even if they do know because the company sees it as hurting the sale of the items right then and there.

Also, it is possible they don't know about it right now. Often stores do not learn about a sale until the week before it happens. When I worked at Best Buy we would not know something was going on sale until our ads for the following week arrived the Tuesday beforehand. The only exception was Black Friday, but only managers were allowed to see the BF ad in advanced.

I just spoke to a B&N employee and they haven’t been told that the sale is cancelled, they just haven’t been given a start date yet and they likely won’t know the start date until the week before.

Based on the thread's heads-up alleging no B&N sale, I bought three Criterions on Amazon.

I'll just have to learn to accept this and move on.

Going back to page 9380 of this thread, the Criterion Sale at B&N appears to have begun last summer on June 28th. If they follow the same pattern, we should know in about a week if there will be a sale this summer.

If I worked at a B&N I would hang up on you guys who keep calling and asking if there's criterion sale. Relaaaaaax.

Even if there is no July sale, it's not the end of the world.

Unless if you get a used copy which is completely different
Yes, but you're comparing a boutique label that releases 4-5 films a month with studios that have immensely deep pockets and can afford to lose money if this title doesn't sell as expected or whatever. I mean, just beyond the sheer effort Criterion goes through, the massive restoration and archival efforts and the licensing fees they take on, many of these projects literally go on for years and don't have economies of scale to fall back on. It's an entirely different economic paradigm than Universal Studios releasing product from its own catalog or whatever.

If all three were priced at $27.99, you made a great purchase. I made a similar purchase through Target's sale (which was the same type of sale.) My order of Husbands, The Cranes Are Flying, and Salesman arrived today. I paid 59 bucks and change, which included the shipping. In my opinion, the purchase I made is just as good as any purchase I would have made online through B&N.

Hi Everyone,

Long time Criterion Collector here who has made the decision to sell off his collection to my fellow criterion lovers. I’ve gone ahead and put everything into a google spreadsheet which I hope is easy for folks to navigate. I’m still adding pricing, but the volume of my collection has made this a slow go. I’m trying to be fair (checking pricing across amazon and embay) and I’m open to negotiation especially if multiples are bought.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

To give a bit of background: Started collecting around 2010-2011 and continued quite feverishly until a year or 2 ago. Having moved into a new house last year I still have my Criterion movies in boxes which made me realize I just don’t have time to watch them like I wish I could. With 3 kids now and a full time job, the Criterion Channel provides me with enough at this time. I’d love my movies to go to fellow lovers of the brand and I’m hoping I won’t hit too much of a loss at selling.

Anyway, let me know if there’s any additional information I can help provide. I know it can be tough to purchase from a stranger, but hopefully the longevity of my user name and history of posting provides a bit of comfort. Let me know if there’s something better I can do here.

I’ll respond to you all as fast as I can - I’ll be juggling this across Reddit, BluRay.com and the Criterion Facebook group.

Thanks in advance for your time and interest!

Tony

Don't get me wrong, they still do phenomenal releases, but what's the point of remastering movies in 4K if they aren't going to properly release them with 4K discs? And why would anyone want to buy a Criterion release that is only 1080P if there is a 4K version available? Take Parasite for example. My wife wanted to Criterion release, but now that we have a 4KTV, she's wonder if she should still get the Criterion release or just get the 4K disc that is out.
Criterion has been slammed before about dragging their heels in adopting new formats/technologies. They didn't move from LD to DVD for about a year and a half after the introduction of DVD. They took a while adopting anamorphic transfers for DVD. They took four years to go to blu-ray. And yet, they are still around. And they've been around and doing phenomenally well for a non-major-studio label for the last three dozen years (their first laserdisc releases were at the tail end of 1984). They are probably older than most of the people complaining about the lack of UHD support.

And the fact is that the UHD format has not proven to be the major leap beyond BD that BD was over DVD, which itself wasn't as major a leap as DVD was over VHS/Beta/LD. With all of the rending of garments and gnashing of teeth among "collectors" over their lack of transitioning to UHD, I really don't think Criterion is suddenly going to start failing.

Fans and collectors vastly overestimate their importance to business. They provide a core base, but true success is measured by the mainstream. The Marvel films aren't doing billion+ box-office because of comic book fans.

Thank you for your sacrifice. You're a legend to have so much OOP treasures and to sell your entire collection like that isn't an easy task at all. I salute you
