Good idea in theory, but hopeless in reality
That sums up everything they do packaging related, that's not just a standard case.

And they can't guarantee any non-major film wouldn't be a losing proposition. Not every blu-ray release is profitable. Many releases have very, very few buyers.

I don't think $50 MSRP would be unrealistic. Rarely does anyone actually pay the full $40 for the standard blus, so using that as a reference point is problematic. Those complaining $20 is too much aren't buying Criterions often. If you scroll through this thread, you'll probably find more people complaining about Lucas's alterations to Star Wars even though it isn't a Criterion than people mentioning the price. There are certainly films that aren't worth $20, but rarely do you see it as a generalization of every Criterion release. I'm not sure I've ever seen that.

This will be the last time I comment on this situation as it seems people just keep missing the point. Other distributors, many of which are less profitable than Criterion, has proven the venture is worthy of investment. Criterion's own mission statement even implies it.
Criterion doesn't believe in single-format releases, outside of Eclipse.

$50 would be a best case scenario.

A few distributors are experimenting, but that's it. Again, why would anyone seriously leap into a format that's barely cracked 500 releases in four years? With fewer manufacturers making players than two years ago? And the online versions of 4k films getting better features - like Dolby Vision - than the physical discs?

I find it impossible to believe that the people in Criterion did the market research, found a promising result, but decided not to jump in. I mean - and again, we've heard from Becker and Lee Kline - they know fans keep suggesting it. They have people inside who would love to see it, creatively.

And the only reason it makes sense as to why they haven't entered the market is if they looked at the market fundamentals and their own financials and saw full-on disaster if they went this route. At least for now.

I went looking for a dodo bird to purchase and could not find one.
I hope that eventually 3D and 4K will be just as difficult to find.

One can feel someone's absence but be indifferent about the absence.
But if you feel you miss someone, it means you wish they were present.
Criterion's translation is more affecting/touching. Criterion for the win.

Man I hope so, I graduated last May from college and finally have some spare change to catch up on my Criterion wish list which has gotten quite extensive.

So I noticed my local Barnes and Noble is open. I'm going to guess others are as well. I don't know if there's been any announcements, but hopefully that bodes well for the Criterion 50% off sale.

It's been confirmed that the sale isn't happening in July this year.

What would be the best webshop for Europeans to take advantage of the upcoming US Criterion Sale? Amazon? Criterion's UK selection isn't very extensive, so will continue to import until that changes.

Ah. I reacted to the post with the wrong information before seeing the screenshot. That's awesome. I'm really looking forward to it.

If you are referring to the B&N 50% sale, it is exclusive to that retailer. B&N used to ship overseas, but I don't know if they currently still do (unrelated to the pandemic; people starting reporting issues a couple of years ago). It may be that the only way to participate would be to use a reshipper service here in the US.

A huge number of films would hardly benefit from it anyway. Blu-ray should remain the default and the primary initiative should still be to make the DVD upgrade to blu. But there are 5 or so releases a year that should get UHD releases.

Using your market share argument just gives strength to the digital transition. If we are going to talk about maximizing profitability, we are also talking about the end of physical media.
I was saying that even if they could make a profit on UHD, the numbers may be so small that it might not be worth the effort for them. This is true even if it's only a few titles a year.
