4k and beyond tv's are the norm now. It's ok if you do not have one, but it is the norm, not the exception. These tv's are not going away or downgrading to 1080P again. When the new gaming systems come with 4K drives, the discs will also take off. Same as the way the PS3 launched blu-ray into the forefront. This is the future. It's ok to embrace it. If you do not have the setup for it, no big deal, as you are still getting blu-rays to play on it. What people are saying, at least I think they are, is that 4K discs are probably the last vestige of physical media, so embrace it.
As for the CC issues people have about not jumping into the game seem simple to me. If CC is going to do 4K scans of 'classic and important' films, then frankly....put them on the proper disc. 2k scans are for blu-ray and 4K scans are for UHD discs, this is not difficult. I know you will see a slight improvement from a 4k scan on a blu, but not incremental in most cases. Why spend the extra $$ to commission a 4K scan, or use one that others have done, if you are not going to put it on the proper disc, like the Elephant Man example. IMO, this is what people are a little frustrated about, this is not difficult stuff.. I get the increased cost, but when your MSRP is already $40 for a blu (which is obviously very high these days), why not $50 for another option?? Again, nothing ventured, nothing gained. CC can EASILY test the waters with several of there releases, or upcoming ones to get a better picture of the market. But for now, they seem numb on the concept, which is too bad... That's my take, go about your lives.... |

If its true about criterion sale july 10 i will be pickin up paths of glory for the extras that are all different than eureka version. Amazon is selling it for 36 dollars. This is not an amazon seller but amazon themselves selling it for this sky rocket price. I have spartacus 4k on preorder with best buy but i am not a stanley kubrick super fan as i only will have four of his movies spartacus, paths of glory, the shining and full metal jacket. I may be becoming a Kirk Douglas superfan after watching him in paths of glory and ace in the hole eureka versions and lonely are the brave. Extras on ace in the hole not much different than criterion so wont be getting the criterion release although i am tempted.
I did order four other criterions from best buy for 27.99 each the Camerman, Destry rides again, the lady eve and the grand budapest hotel (blind buy) but best buy sent me a 90 dollar coupon for buying the 4500 dollar lg 77" oled c9. They also sent me a 200 Doller coupon for that and i used on the panasonic 820 4k player. It was already 100 off so i saved 300 from todays price of 500 on best buy. I did pay 500 for my first panasonic 820 4k player when it first came out but needed another one after upgrading my lg 65" c8 as i will still be using old tv in another room. Oh and my barnes and noble membership ends on july 9th one day before but i dont care about saving a 1-2 dollars. The main thing is im getting what i want and not waiting 6 months to a year or longer for it. Last edited by Cooper67; 06-25-2020 at 04:11 AM. |

I was going to list some more movies for you to check out but the truth is that you should make a fervent attempt to see as much as you can. His 20-year run from the late-40s through the 60s is flat-out ridiculous. |

Been rewatching a bunch of Fassbinder, so hoping for a good discount on Eight Hours Don't Make a Day, which I've never seen.
Also, The Cranes Are Flying, which I watched a few years ago on DVD. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is on my list, a blind purchase. The Apu Trilogy. I watched the first two, but Netflix never got the third on Blu-ray. I also rented The Big City, but the DVD looked awful, so may be getting that too. Also want to upgrade Brief Encounter, High and Low, the Jacques Tati movies and Elevator to the Gallows from their DVD versions. Might get the Bruce Lee collection, as I've only fully seen two movies from it. |

"Feel your absence" to me sounds more poetic than "feel I miss you". But I haven't seen the film and don't know the tone.

Ah, okay. Does Amazon price-match, though? Maybe some titles are reduced, but 50% across the board? (Unless I've not been aware of it).

I have never seen Criterion re-releasing any of their films before unless if they were 1.) Originally released on Dual-Format or 2.) They went OOP. High and Low has been with the Criterion Collection since October 13th, 1998 (22 Years) and it hasn't gone OOP ever since it first debuted (It also appeared on Criterion's Laserdisc era but I won't be counting that in). I don't see High and Low getting a Region A Re-Release but if you're Region Free (Which I believe you might have), then you can wait for a Region B release since High and Low didn't get a Region B release yet surprisingly. The company that would probably do the release would be BFI since they own most of the Kurosawa films alongside StudioCanal. It certainly is surprising that this movie hasn't had a restoration, considering it's probably Kurosawa's greatest noir film (Or his most popular one).
Region A: Probably not unless Criterion goes onto 4K UHD. (Janus Films also owns this film) Region B: Very likely with BFI (Highly possible) or StudioCanal releasing it in three years or so for the 60th anniversary. Until then, hold onto your wallets and your patience because it's going to be a long, long wait. |

Apparently one can stream their content from HBOmax with better sound quality than is available from the Criterion Channel itself. And probably can do similar from any other streaming service that offers their content as well (prime etc). Such an irritating fail. If they can't even get the sound right, how are they ever going to get 4K right? |
