So it looks like B&N has a medical doctor supervising the set up of this sale (coronavirus?). Does that mean he or she is going to have the sales floor employees set up the blu-rays to be 6 feet apart? ![]() ![]() |

My Name is Julia Ross (1945)
![]() A woman applies for a live-in job and wakes up in a different house. While The Criterion Channel classifies this as noir, I'm not so sure it fits that designation. Either way, this is a tight, tense thriller that doesn't waste any time. Worth a watch. The Whole Town's Talking (1935) ![]() Who knew Edward G. Robinson did comedy? Who knew John Ford did comedy? Who knew they did a comedy together? Well, they did, and this was the result. Edward G. Robinson stars as a mild-mannered accountant named Jones who just happens to look exactly like an escaped killer named Mannion. The trouble for Jones is that every cop has been instructed to shoot Mannion on sight. This must be where Bowfinger got the idea from. Edward G. Robinson has fun playing with his tough guy gangster image. Jean Arthur is also great as Edward G's "sassy" co-worker and potential love interest. (Subtitles: Yes to both, but the subtitles for My Name is Julia Ross don't always quite line up with the dialogue. It's good enough though.) |

I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire on Prime last night. Mills & Boon with a bit of French sophistication is how I would describe it. Lightweight but pleasant (with some lovely natural light photography), and that's not a bad thing to be, but I have to wonder at the hype. YMMV.

Regarding next month's announcements for October releases, whenever I think of horror, I think of John Carpenter.
And then it makes me wonder... why is there not a single John Carpenter film in the Criterion Collection? Someone please shed some light on this, because I cannot imagine only another non-major label like Scream Factory is allowed to release his films. |

Why would they bother when Scream, like you alluded, have dedicated themselves to releasing his films?
As for non-Scream titles, what else is there? The Ward? They're certainly not going to be given Halloween (back). Pretty obvious answer to your question. |

Halloween is already available in 4K UHD with a solid bunch of extras and discussed to death in books and online articles, definitely not a film that "needs" the Criterion treatment. Last edited by ravenus; 06-27-2020 at 05:42 AM. |

Some October horror titles I'd love to see... Haynes's Poison, De Palma's Fury, something from Peter Jackson (preferably Heavenly Creatures), or even more Romero to go with NofLD

I somehow feel it'd be less likely. Romero's color films might be too gory (even with the bright red blood) for the core Criterion fanbase that is not necessarily horror fans. I don't see them doing Dawn of the Dead or Martin for that reasons. Can't think of anything else that'd be worth their doing (not already out on BD).

I hope we finally get upgrades of Blood for Dracula & Flesh for Frankenstein in October. That photo of Paul Morrissey visiting Criterion, ages ago, hopefully had something to do with it.
