I could see them putting out Knightriders with a new 2/4K restoration since I think Shout doesn’t have it anymore.

I dunno. If Criterion has no qualms about films with such extreme content as Salo and Antichrist, it's hard to imagine all that much in the way of pearl-clutching over Dawn of the Dead. Maybe I'm delusional, but I've long thought that Criterion would be one of the labels on these shores most likely to bring Dawn back to Blu-ray.

Plus Stuff like Silence of the Lambs, Cronenberg’s movies, Blood for Dracula/Flesh for Frankenstein, etc... I don’t think they’d think twice about releasing Dawn. It would probably just depend on who has US rights at this point

On a bit of a Lynch kick this weekend. Found Twin Peaks on Netflix last night (which I had never seen). In a way, I'm glad that I am discovering all of this stuff now. I have his entire career to explore in any order I choose. May pick up physical media if it screens well. Fire Walk with Me is a Criterion release which is nice. Looks quite progressive for its time. Even the opening credits. Can definitely tell Lynch's style is all over it. Looks really good.

For tonight, I have a recent blind-buy from back in the day as well. Should be interesting. I can tell already. I guess me and Sven Atanasov have the same carpet.

Lynch really does have quite an influence. I even named a rabbit in my backyard Suzie. It just does a bunch of random stuff. It's 1:50 PM.

That question submission request for The Way of the Samurai looks really cool. I wish I knew more about film.

I would love for Criterion to release the Theatrical edition of Michael Mann's The Keep for Halloween. I know Mann has lost interest in it but I can see someone like Guillermo Del Toro doing a commentary for it as he's a big fan of the film.

One can dream right?

I don't dream big so for the upcoming Halloween, I'll just settle for Arsenic and Old Lace or a Blu upgrade of Jigoku.

Someone please shed some light on this, because I cannot imagine only another non-major label like Scream Factory is allowed to release his films.
Weirdly enough I don't picture Carpenter being on Criterion. Nothing against him, he's one of my favourite directors. But his work just doesn't feel like it meshes with Criterion. It's almost like he's too rebellious for them.

If any horror film belongs in the Collection, it's gotta be Possession.

Or Dawn of the Dead (and Martin). But I'm just being unrealistically hopeful.

I think they're dated enough that they could belong on the label.
I mean they have Salo which is goes beyond anything one should watching.
And off the top of my head I feel as though Croenberg's work is more gross to look at and the violence in Pan's Labyrinth is tougher to see.

Dawn and Martin could belong considering it's more of the same director they already released. I mean look at the subreddit and you'll always see the same old larger titles that belong on the label whether it be TCM or something new like recent Safdie bros films.

I'm not sure what about them doesn't fit. In their time, Criterion has run the gamut of films. They've put out some of the most highly praised films of all time, and they've put out "trash".

They've put out Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein, The Blob, Armageddon, The Beastie Boys Video Anthology, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, Jellyfish Eyes, and two bat-shit films by Guy Maddin (not that Maddin has made any films that aren't bat-shit).

I'm not sure there's anything that isn't in their wheelhouse.

Does anyone know if Barnes & Noble is having their criterion sale in July this year? I’ve heard different things but nothing concrete

Since it looks like Dragon Dynasty/Weinstein's death grip has expired on the Shaw Brothers titles, I wonder if that means that their grip on the John Woo titles like The Killer have expired and maybe Criterion can return them to the Collection?

If you go back in the topic you will see numerous posts that say the sale is from July 10 to August 2.

Thank you, that’s good news! I’ve been trying to keep up with this thread off and on and must have missed it.

They have longed expired earlier this year and Hard Boiled seems like it went OOP a few weeks ago already. The Killer is a big possibility since there was a recent restoration for it shown at the Hawaiian Film Festival last year. Hard Boiled is still pretty muddy and unclear at this point. However, since Criterion hit a huge deal with Fortune Star that can be proved by the recent announcements of Police Story and the Bruce Lee boxset, The Killer and Hard Boiled may have gone back to Fortune Star already. (The Killer is already owned by Fortune Star but Hard Boiled went to a different company) I'm hoping that Hard Boiled gets a release though! (My favorite film from Hong Kong!)

And like I cautioned everyone last week or two to stop holding those "They said" reports as 100% saying there won't be a sale, I'll give the same warning about people doing a complete 180 based apparently on one (or possibly two) reports that haven't been substantiated by Barnes and Noble yet.

My opinion was and still is that there will be a sale this summer, but I'm not jumping all over that 7/10 date just yet. If 4 or 5 separate employees or managers are starting to confirm that report -- great, but I'd suggest pulling back the throttle a bit in the absolute yes or no answers. Nothing yet I've seen says more than maybe

You don't really need to know much about the film as long as you come up with a creative, unique question for Jim Jarmusch that gets Criterion's attention.

I'll bet my life savings Criterion will never get around to releasing Cheech & Chong movies though.
