Are we getting a B&N sale in July?

Edit: Just called a local store and they said they still don't know if it's happening, allegedly. Last year it started on June 29... so I'm guessing that they probably would know by now if it was actually happening which doesn't seem like good news.

Apparently on the 10th of July.

I can’t wait for July 10th when every other post will be asking/speculating when the sale ends

An employee posted a screenshot of an internal B&N system online that might indicate it starting on July 10th. It's uncorroborated (I asked again this morning in my closest store, and was told they have no confirmation yet if it is running).

Nice. That's the set that I'm interested in also. I ordered it but I will cancel and wait until July 10. I found all of the Blu-ray versions, some with 4K scans, in Japan (obviously ) but I can't be sure if they have English subtitles. Some say yes, some say no. I would think that they would all have English subtitles. There is an English title at the bottom of all of the discs but the main title is in Japanese as well as everything else. My Japanese is shaky at best. I recognize some of the easy nouns, verbs, etc. but I would still be lost without subtitles. They would also be MUCH more expensive. Here is the cover for Equinox Flower which has English subs. I love how it has the "teleporting" teapot and cup on the cover. Ozu bought the famous red teapot and cup himself for use in the film. The teapot changes rooms and locations throughout the film. He would never use prop paintings either. He would work with local artists who would create paintings for his films. Stuff like calendars hanging on the wall, too. He would buy all those. I like his camera work, too, using the tatami shot at just above floor level with that low tripod which he is famous for.

EDIT: Shochiku (Ozu's studio) Home Video in Japan says that all of the Japanese releases have English subs, which is what I thought. I will go with the Eclipse set unless I want to go broke They should look nice. Early Summer, though, the middle chapter in the Noriko trilogy, is only on DVD. THAT I may pick up on BD at a later date in Japan.

Probably something will be known by Monday if it's going to happen on the 10th. Possibly even after the July Corporate bulletin goes out in the next couple days

Affair in Trinidad (1952)

I was excited to see Affair in Trinidad specifically because of the locale, but if it was actually filmed in Trinidad, I can't tell... It takes place mostly indoors, uses NO actors with a Trini accent, and barely feels authentic. About the only detail it got right was people fanning themselves in the hot courtroom.

Otherwise, it's perfunctory as a murder mystery noir - perfectly fine and breezily enjoyable, but nothing overly special either. The highlight here is definitely Rita Hayworth. Character actor Steven Geray (So Dark the Night) is also fun in a small role. The actress playing Dominique the maid, Juanita Moore, is so obviously black playing Indian, and not Trini at all. She utters gibberish meant to be passed off as "Trini proverbs." It's ridiculous. But she does the best she can with absolute crap. (Annie must have been inspired by this, with Geoffrey Holder being a black Trini in real life playing the Indian "Punjab.") And then, of course, there's Glenn Ford, the supposed "hero" of the story, who has no problem slapping his love interest around. Some hero! Too bad we never got a sequel: Divorce in Barbados.

The motivations for the murder are convoluted, and the ending feels rushed, hokey, cliched, and anticlimactic. The last 25 minutes or so are thrilling though.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: There is still some fun to be had here, but this is easily the weakest of the "Columbia Noirs" I've sampled. (Subtitles: Yes!)

I may make room for one more tonight - probably Red Sun.

Great film. Not your typical haunted house film. Laurence Olivier. Joan Fontaine. Oscar win for a newcomer to Hollywood. Becoming a big fan of early Hitchcock. Just picked up both Rebecca and Notorious.

[Show spoiler]I placed an order for seven titles on June 2. All were in stock. I paid the mandatory Global Priority shipping rate. The original expected delivery date set by Amazon was June 6; this later changed to July 1. The order did not ship until June 25, with a new delivery date of July 14. I complained, and Amazon refunded the shipping charges. Package was actually delivered yesterday (June 29) - via DHL. So, it did ship Priority in the end, but only after Amazon sat on the order for over three weeks. Trying to make Amazon understand that this is the issue was a challenge to say the least. I did get the "virus" excuse, but as I pointed out to Amazon, it made the decision to resume international shipping, and must therefore have been confident it could meet customer expectations - especially when it is only offering a premium shipping option.
I had a similar (but definitely not the same) experience with Amazon DE. I pre-ordered the German UHD of The Princess Bride back in January. Release date was originally in February, got pushed back to April, and again until June 19. Amazon DE still doesn't ship to the US currently, but because I pre-ordered this, they apparently felt obliged to honor the order (even though they don't charge my card until actual shipping), as they previously did with the Rollerball UHD.

Anyway, June 19 came and went. They finally shipped it a week later, and it was via DHL, so I got it in three days. The other upside to this (and Rollerball) was that they honored the original shipping cost from my pre-orders. So, each one cost me three euros (~3.35 USD) for shipping. Can't really complain.

And Judith Anderson's performance as Mrs. Danvers is one of my favourite (and I think best) in any Hitchcock film.

A Criterion BD has been considered a given for a while now, especially following the upgrades for Rebecca and Notorious.

The Spellbound transfer is the weakest of the three in the MGM set, but still very watchable.

If I *had* to pick a favorite performance I'd probably go with my gut and say Thelma Ritter in Rear Window but this would definitely be in the running.

Oh, God yes. Great performance. Really convincing and sinister. Every time she was around Mrs. de Winter I would cringe. And the ending, well, is
[Show spoiler]her ending
