I finally unwrapped my blu-ray of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and was thoroughly entertained by this zany, crazy film. I never really knew much about the director Russ Meyer, and though his fixation on large mammories was his passion in cinema, I personally am more impressed by his portrayal of strong, aggressive female characters (I'd love to see a Criterion release of his earlier film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!). Sure, trash cinema has its place, but Meyer's movies were the pinnacle of this genre. I had a newfound illumination of screenwriter/critic Roger Ebert as well, and his screenplay was quite titillating (pun intended). I would like to see a blu-ray release of Meyer's lusty film Vixen! too, as that was a big box office seller back then. And back on BtVotD, I do believe this could and should have been the cult classic that The Rocky Horror Picture Show attained 5 years later. It has enough memorable one liners ("You will drink the black sp#rm of my vengeance!") that would have easily been spoken (with a tongue in cheek) at 70s house parties (but maybe quotes from this film were spoken... just not reported or saturated into pop CULTure at the time). Oh, and that soundtrack by Strawberry Alarm Clock (and performed by the Carrie Nations), my god I frickin' love that song "Look On Up at the Bottom" (its what Janis Joplin would have written had she lived on past 1970):

Anyway, with all the boobage I was exposed to by watching that movie, I had to take a very cold shower and start watching Michael Mann movies next.

I began with the ever brilliant Thief... last night I watched The Keep, one WEIRD film (on my new DVD that was just shipped to my house 2 days ago)...and tonight I will watch Manhunter! After that, its the rest of the Mann trilogy.

After all those women, I needed me some Mann... yep, Mann movies are made for men!

When I was getting my membership renewed today, the woman who was assisting me said it was happening starting Friday and that they just found out about it.

I think Criterion's cover art for Hitchcock's Rebecca is one of their best. The semi-silhouette is perfect considering the way in which the character is dealt with in the story. Almost all other releases show Olivier and/or Fontaine on the cover, which IMO defeats the purpose of the movie to some extent.

Considering the highly rated video and audio quality, this Criterion package should one of their best.

I just called my local store here in Wisconsin. They confirmed that the sale is tomorrow and they put every title I want on hold for me to pick up in the morning.

Not sure if I want to just get Persona and The Seventh Seal individually or just get the Bergman boxed set. Persona and The Seventh Seal are the only titles in the set that I've heard of.

If you like The Seventh Seal and Persona, then you're gonna like many of his other films. I say go with the Bergman set.

I want that Bergeman set. But it would be a complete blind buy, since I've only seen the seventh seal (which I liked). But idk if I'll be able to get it this time around, cause I have quite a few titles I want to pick up. But I know if I see it in store I'll probably impulse buy it lol.

What a coincidence. The last few posts talking about Bergman movies, and I see that tonight TCM is showing a few of them: The Seventh Seal, The Virgin Spring and Hour of the Wolf. I'd only heard of the first two and was gonna try to watch them. There's another non-Bergman movie with Max von Sydow in the lineup, too, called The Emigrants.

I don't believe there is a fixed policy, but my three local B&N stores have done it before. I find a friendly and polite phone call always does the trick.

I've pointed this out once before, but anyone interested in this set should make buying it a priority. I believe all the films are licensed from the same place but if they decide to revoke the license of just one film or bonus feature, then the whole set will go OOP. Criterion could also decide to discontinue the set on their own and offer the films only as stand alone releases. This set was a special Bergman centennial release and that was almost two years ago, so who knows what they have planned. They had a similar Kurosawa DVD set that went OOP.

I have considered this as well. Let's see what kind of impulses I get when the sale starts

I'm seriously considering your advice on this one. Like the poster you responded to, I've only seen some of Bergman's work and having been putting off watching more of his films for a long time. Perhaps it is time for that to end.

Not sure if you can at every B&N, but at least the ones here in WI let me call and place items on a three day hold. I've been able to do this for the last few years at the start of every Criterion sale.

Again, not much of a sale. People have "lists" like they're 5 bucks each. $20 is not much of a bargain for one Blu Ray. You can get an "Apocalypse Now" 4k 6 disc set for that.
