Is it a Wes Anderson film? Yeah, who cares.

I'd back you up there. Wages of Fear is a great and unique film. I first saw it on the TV about 20 years ago. The early Criterion DVD had a pretty ordinary transfer, with lots of compression artefacts. The bluray is the best we're likely to see it in this lifetime. Go for it.

Im sure someone will release it at some point, Criterion or not. As far as I'm concerned, Darjeeling is the only one that really begged for a Blu release, because it is far and away his best looking film. Some of the shots of India are breathtaking. It's also the only movie by him thats ever done anything for me.

But back on topic, Wes Anderson is pretty popular, so I'm sure it'll happen at some point.

When they get around to Diabolique, don't miss it, my fav (in the CG sense) Clouzot. I'd like to see the L'Enfer flick that's been out recently, too.

I don't understand the hate for the Senso cover art. People have been *****ing and moaning about the fact that Criterion don't use vintage poster art for enough of their releases - how many times did we hear that when their Red Shoes BD cover art came out? I think the Senso cover is great, and the Sweet Smell cover too. (have you seem the cover art for the Studio Canal Senso BD? Yuk!)

CG, I don't agree with you about too many "cartoon" covers. They are illustrations, some of which you might call "cartoonish" or in a comic-strip style, eg. the Fuller titles announced last month. You are lumping them all together under a single category which does not do them justice.

I like all the covers this months, with the exception of Still Walking - that looks a bit like a home-made hobbyist job, mainly I think due to the daggy font used.
I like the Red Shoes cover. My thing with the Senso cover is that it's one of those films (like his film The Leopard) that is full of visuals that going with a "cartoon-like" cover art was IMO a bad choice. Others can rip on it for looking video-game-ish or whatever. I'm not trying to bash the artist either.

Just look at The Leopard's full packaging. That is what I saw this being. We shall see what the end result is (plain clear case, or more artwork with a digi).

Thanks (in the CG sense). I just think "Best" makes people that says that look like the be-all of film critics. The word just sounds like your pushing everything else to the side, if you watched everything else or not. Plus you look really stupid if you have a different "best" movie every week. Fav justs sounds better. I don't know, just my opinion.

Looking forward to seeing how different Criterion's release of Senso is from StudioCanal's.

Oh, and the fact that I'll actually be able to understand it...

Just saw Paths of Glory and I must say that the movie is really good. It is sad that situations really do go down like that in wars. No wonder the French government banned it for so long, if they carried on like that the French have nobody to blame but themselves. One of the better antiwar pieces that I have viewed.

Next up on my Criterion mini haul (just 4 movies) from the B&N 50% off sale is some Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai,Yojimbo, Sanjuro). Lets try Yojimbo since ppl say that this was ripped off by one of my favs A Fisful of Dollars

We NEED more studios doing classic digibooks: If Warner's going to get stingy with their catalog classics, others will have to fill in the slack.

I'd said "I'll never complain about Criterion cover art again after Modern Times", but I'm sure they'll have a way of surprising us..
(It tends to fit in with the image that the only people who buy Criterions are the ones who know about the movie, and the only ones that can understand the covers.)

Nah, Sarandon never had that much of a bustli...oh, you mean her!

Just off the general appreciation of Amarcord:
I remember when Woody Allen's "Radio Days" came out, and we all sighed, "Gee, how could Woody suddenly make such a cuddly, nostalgic personal film right in the middle of his whole loopy mid-80's period for cheat-cribbing Film 101 Fellini and Bergman classics?" It seemed too good to be true; how could he make an actual normal real film all of a sudden?
Then a while later, I was watching "Amarcord", and aha!...It all fell into place.

I always think everyone that has any sort of interest in Avant-Garde should get the Brakhage set. It is easily my favorite Criterion release. Sets like this are why I love Criterion. I don't see it mentioned often, but I recommend it to anyone that knows what they would be getting into.
I remember coming home froma parent/teacher meeting for my youngest...it was a rainy day and I streamed Revanche and really enjoyed it. I wound up buying it during the July 2010 B & N sale.

You're right...it is underrated...

As far as Brakhage...I would agree. I almost bought it, but, like most of us, you have to make a decision based on interest and money spent. Since I'm getting a LOT of releases between now and the new year, I decided to forego this until a later time.

I wasn't going to jump on the BBS set, but made a move, as the price was right...but that's more cash. Unless you're independently wealty like Beta ( ), then you have to draw the line somewhere.

Hey...I've got the entire DVD set of Twilight Zone and I want to get the BDs, but the CC sale is a priority and they will have to wait.

I'm poor! I've drawn the line at catalog titles of stuff I would normally jump on at $10-$12.... typically cheesy 80's movies I have on DVD that I don't really watch, but then I see "Ooh Teen Wolf..... I love that movie" and I buy it Speaking of Teen Wolf... I think I'll go watch the DVD now!

I just had a huge setback too..... my old Burr Coffee Grinder died after 4+ years of basically daily use..... I had to ask the girl at the coffee shop to grind my beans..... what a sickening feeling

Either way... thanks to Amazon Prime, I should have a new one in a couple of days. (Just placed the order) for one that I'm sure is infinitely better than the one we received as a wedding present

Would Paths of Glory be a decent blind buy? I have only seen 2 Kubrick films (yeah, I know), but it seems to be a more thoughtful war film, which I like.

Oh GOD...that is too weird!!!

I bought a Solis Burr grinder about 10 or more years ago. My 7 year old son is autistic and he recently came into my kitchen and decided to play with the sink...specifically the dish sprayer. Suffice it to say that he soaked the kitchen floor and watered down EVERYTHING, including my grinder.

I was able to "dry it out" and I got it to work marginally...it would grind, but not drop the coffee in to the cup as quickly as before. My wife decides that it needs to be cleaned and read somewhere that grinding rice in it, is a good way to clean it. I tell her OK, but to be careful.

SURE ENOUGH, she must have pushed it too far and she burned out the motor...NOW I have to buy a new burr grinder as well. And only YOU Beta (and a few of the more sophisticated coffee drinkers understand the difference bewteen a blade grinder and a burr grinder).

Suffice it to say, GOOD ones aren't cheap and after you've gotten used to having one, you feel incomplete without it.

PLEASE let me know what you think about the one that you are getting...I told my wife I wouldn't rush into getting another one, until I found the best option for the least amount of cash.

There's a Kitchen Aid that I'm looking at...but might wait for Black Friday/Christmas sales to get a good price.

In the meantime, I'll do the same as you and get my coffee ground anyplace with a grinder.

Put down your copy of Antichrist and back slowly away from the tv.

I blind-bought. I love SK and he has made two of my favorite films of all-time in their respective genres. I had seen almost every Kubrick except Paths (for whatever reason) and have watched it three times since. I was in awe. During the final act, my heart was literally pounding out of my chest. While it's a war film at heart, it really is so much more. I don't want to give too much away, but there is some battlefield stuff, courtroom stuff, prison stuff. Two thumbs way up.

And then aside from content, the transfer is, of course, gorgeous.

Sounds like I better be careful. I don't need or want my burr grinder to break.
