Finally picked up a copy of Leave Her to Heaven, having missed the TT release before it went OOP. It's a blind-buy, and one I'm particularly looking forward to - especially for the cinematography, and the towering central performance I've read about.

Also, love the cover!

So I watched Tokyo Story the other night for the first time. Man did that film hit home, as someone who lost his grandfather back in November to cancer. It brought up so many feelings. I have people in my family who acted the same way some of the characters in the film acted. Grieved for a few minutes then went around demanding stuff of his as keepsakes. I could go on and on about the parallels I experienced with the movie. Made me wonder what my grandfather thought of me as a grandson, a father of 3, a husband. The last time I saw him was at my wedding. I missed the opportunity to say goodbye to him, everything happened so fast kinda like in the movie. Sorry about the rant, don't usually get the opportunity.

It's a miracle B&N is still in business. I ordered 8 items from the current sale, all on the same day, and all 8 were shipped separately. They've managed to maximize inconvenience, opportunities for product breakage, and their postage costs (which you'd think would matter more to them).

I had the same issue! I bought 6 movies and a book. Thinking they would ship them all together in a nice box and not get a book that’s messed up. I get shipping notifications and the movies are together, but the book gets shipped on its own. So I get to see what fresh he’ll that book goes through to get to me.

Considering B&N likely doesn't pay the shipping costs it probably doesn't matter to them at all. After B&N website takes the order, their cut of the sale is done. Unless you are getting them shipped directly from a specific B&M store via a phone order then I'm pretty sure B&N isn't out an extra penny

Alliance Entertainment handles the fulfillment/distribution so if they think it's cheaper to ship separately then either it is or like Amazon they don't really care. Alliance has close to a monopoly of disc distribution these days. Amazon and Best Buy and Walmart who ship most of their own actually source their discs mostly from Alliance -- it's the reason why sometimes a Best Buy exclusive occasionally gets mixed into a Walmart or Amazon order or a Best Buy package is received with an item with a Walmart sticker.

Virtually all the other online retailers or B&M stores with an online order system outsource their disc sales/fulfillment directly to ALLIANCE (the famous Shepherdsville KY warehouse).

Deep Discount, Blowitoutahere, importcds and the rest of the DirectoU LLC sites are owned directly by Alliance.

Target uses Ingram, but they are the only major site that doesn't use Alliance as their main source.

Not sure where the independents like Bullmoose, Zia, Amoeba source their product.

You can wait for the criterion and spend 2-3 times as much, and chances are, it will be inferior to what seems to be an excellent release.

I bought my copy a few weeks ago and will be watching it one of these days. Some of Eureka's titles have recently been discontinued, including some of their MoC Japanese releases. Not sure if Onibaba will be discontinued as well, but better be safe than sorry .
I've criticized Criterion's encodes too, but do you really think a master from 2013 will look worse than a new one licensed by Criterion, possibly scanned in 4K?

I have so many Masters of Cinema titles I wanna get with my next import. Added this one to my list today.

I remember that now since you've mentioned it. I sent a bunch back and got new replacements for all of them but I don't recall if Pierrot Le Fou was one of them. I'll have to check the one I have for bronzing. Crap!

Well, looks like Pierrot le Fou isn't OOP anymore. I'm not double-dipping, though. Have to save my peanuts for now. Just bought a 4K scan of Late Spring. Game of Thrones 4K set comes out a month later. Just bought quite a few Criterions, too, obviously right before the sale

Saw the Godzilla set in a store the other day. If you're a member can you get an additional 10 percent off the 50 percet?

Now that you've watched the remake, find Make Way for Tomorrow and get depressed all over again.

Tokyo Story isn't a remake of Make Way for Tomorrow. The latter certainly is well documented as inspiring the former, but Ozu's film is not a remake of it.

Tokyo Story is my favorite foreign film. I just picked up the Criterion edition a few weeks ago. I also picked up the 4K scan of Late Spring in Japan this week which is the first film in the infamous "Noriko Trilogy" with the second film being Early Summer and the aforementioned Tokyo Story the last film in the three film series. Obviously you know the reference to Noriko played by Setsuko Hara who lights up the screen with her presence every time. I lost count of how many films Chishu Ryu is in with Ozu, way back to the silent era I believe. The documentaries of Ozu and Ryu are amazing with their relationship with Shochiku Film and Ofuna Studio. The talent that went into these films is stunning. The respect that Ozu has garnered among film professionals is pretty incredible to witness. It's an admiration I haven't seen before.

What draws me to Ozu's films is the same theme that he uses continuously in different ways throughout his films. The notion of what it is to be human. We can all relate to the story just as has been mentioned previously in the thread. There is sorrow, yes, but there is also much joy. No lavish sets. No special effects. It's captured in a most subtle way, which is Ozu's style, but which is so powerful in the way that you experience the film. I'm glad that the first serious investment of my time has been spent on learning more about Ozu and his career. Subtle fascination just like his films that keeps me going back.

I'm surprised you can find a 4K scan of Late Spring. I don't have a projector or anything so I can't buy the prints or scans anyways but you're really lucky to get that. It's one my mother's favorite films and the Criterion Blu-ray for it looks damaged. I'm surprised a 4K scan of it already existed without me knowing!

Glad that someone also enjoys Ozu as much as I do!
