Having just picked up and devoured "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" as my last blind buy Purchase of this sale. I would love to see an entire Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger Criterion boxset. They have released most or all of their films at one time or another, but some are out of print, and some have never made it to Bluray yet.

They actually have. I imported almost all of their movies from the UK on blu-ray on the cheap, $10-15 shipping included. Transfer was pristine.

There are a number of outstanding P&P films that have not made it to BD anywhere in the world, including A Canterbury Tale and I Know Where I'm Going! (likely to be the next Criterion release, as it has recently been restored).

However, you are right to suggest importing as the UK editions of the famous ones are equivalent to the Criterions in quality. Apart from Black Narcissus, however, none of the UK editions come close to the Criterions in terms of extras

I hate to be that guy but a little bit of hyperbole there. Out of 20 films Powell and Pressburger did together, Criterion released only 9 (excluding Peeping Tom since it's Powell's solo). Of course they got crème de la crème and Blu upgrades of DVD-only releases would be lovely (especially The Small Back Room for me).

How are we feeling about the chance of a Fellini announcement next month? There are only two months left for his 100th, and it would be good to release it in November in time for the holidays. I’m curious to know if the pandemic has somehow put this on the back burner. I sure hope not.

Also, I’m sure it won’t be as complete as the Bergman set due to rights issues. Are there any Fellini films we know for certain that are in the hands of other rights-holders? Criterion already has the majority of his major works, but I’d die over a complete collection. We can always dream.

It was one of the only blind buys of The Sale (I don’t like to blind buy), but I am familiar with the history of the plot. It was extremely well made and unbelievably disturbing. The sad thing is the reality (which it touches on) is much worse. It could never be made today, at least not legally. You could tell the actors were in actual danger, as well as the crew. I could discuss this forever, as it make you think, not only about the topic but also about the filmmaking itself.

I thiiiiink Kino recently announced a Fellini film, actually, so that may dash "Complete" hopes.

EDIT: Ah yes, CASANOVA, which is set for September release.

There's a couple other of his films that have been released by other labels here. The Voice of the Moon, and Orchestra Rehearsal were released by Arrow, City of Women from Cohen Media Group. The Clowns was released by RaroVideo, though looks like it may be OOP.

yeah, I'm thinking the Fellini set will have the films already released by Criterion, both OOP and not? And IL BIDONE. Maybe SPIRITS OF THE DEAD?

I'd say the set could even be defined by a chunk of years, but AND THE SHIP SAILS ON would put a wrench in that, if its back in print.

My unobstructed view order finally moved from on hold to processing, no idea when I'll actually get my movies in hand since Now, Voyager is on backorder. Honestly, most of the titles on my wishlist were backorder, something I wanted to avoid dealing with, but I've been wanting to pick up Now, Voyager for a while now so I couldn't say no. Wanted to slip in Cat People but it was sadly on backorder and would have pushed me a bit over the budget I had set for myself. Have to most likely wait for whenever the next sale hits to further chip away at my wishlist.

Speaking of Cat People, I'm a little sad we didn't get Curse of the Cat People or any Val Lewton for October. Still looking forward to The Gunfighter and maybe Claudine, just wish we got more horror for October.

Well, Curse is with Scream Factory and their edition is pretty great, if a little less short of extras than a Criterion would be. But I agree with you and am still holding out hope they're gonna do I Walked With A Zombie at some point...

Will have to check that out. Cat People is the only one of his works that I've seen but if they're all similar levels of quality I'd jump on any Criterion release from him.

Similarly, I know people were really wanting Parasite in the collection but since it was for October releases I had the small hope we'd get I Saw the Devil as it "fits" more in my mind. Added bonus of possibly getting a nice release for people like me that missed those nice Korean releases, especially since the US release is from 2011 and nothing since.

Just found out Trilogia de Guillermo Del Toro is now OOP on the Criterion website for a Blu-ray boxset. Hoping it will come back in print and has it always been Out Of Stock during the ENTIRE B&N sale? Can't believe Criterion didn't announce it or this site (Had to check the GDT forum) and Criterion Forum saying it's OOP until now

I don't know if it's a case of the caps being a few years older, from 2009, or if they really are slightly different from being released a few years apart or the Eureka was off in the encoding/colors.
The Eureka is darker in the second set of caps, but I'm not sure I'd agree that it's necessarily more accurate-looking since some shadow detail is also lost. Plus, the caps don't match up exactly and I recall the film at times flickering from moment to moment. I agree about the greener hue. Also curious to get thoughts from those who have compared both discs.

Same! Especially since Scream basically said they were done releasing these since the ones they did were poor sellers. Was really hoping all nine of these would come out. Now post Scream releases, I feel like Criterion doing ZOMBIE is the only realistic possibility.

That being said, I think the "one at a time" method Scream was doing with them did them no favors. They may have been restricted, but a 4 set ala their Universal/Vinny Price/Paul Naschy sets I think would have been better as a seller.

See, that's not actually as exclusionary as it may seem; The Bergman Box has Serpent's Egg, which also had a US Blu ray release from Arrow Academy less than a month after the Boxset released. It may be possible that some movies are in similar places

I looked things up, and it seems like 15 films are quite surely with Criterion, Orchestra Rehearsal, The Voice of the Moon, City of Women, Boccaccio '70, Casanova, Love in the City, I Clowns are with different labels. I'm REALLY looking forward to the announcement...
