Just watched Modern Times. A delight in all respects. Great release.

Just watched The Killing by Stanley Kubrick, quite an enjoyable bit of film noir, eagerly anticipating the Criterion release since I believe they have the rights to it now.

Also, what are the chances of a Blu release of Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales?

Welp, Paths of Glory was maybe just a sign for things to come.

i've got a question for anyone else with the night of the hunter BD:

at 42:39, does anyone else notice something weird going on with the frame in their copy, like something is stretched and then goes back to normal? i don't know if there's a technical term, but it happens when powell raises his head up, just for a frame.

thanks!

The Killing was shown by Criterion at All Tomorrow's Parties, and was also an MGM title much like Paths of Glory, so I'm assuming its in the pipeline.

I just put together my selection from the upcoming Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, good times ahead. What do you think?:

The Illusionist (Sylvain Chomet)
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
Biutiful (Alejandro González Iñárritu)
127 Hours (Danny Boyle)
Never Let Me Go (Mark Romanek)
Of Gods and Men (Xavier Beauvois)
Certified Copy (Abbas Kiarostami)
Silent Souls (Aleksei Fedorchenko)
Steam of Life (Joonas Berghäll, Mika Hotakainen)
Julia's Disappearance (Christoph Schaub)
The Poll Diaries (Chris Kraus)
Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky)
Essential Killing (Jerzy Skolimowski)
Somewhere (Sofia Coppola)

Plus:
Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa)
Loves of a Blonde (Milos Forman)

Bruno Ganz will attend the screening of Julia's Disappearance. I wonder if he wants to sign my copy of Wings of Desire.

Since I couldn't wait for some Chaplin, I just watched my DVD of The Kid, and I've got to say, I really hope that Criterion releases more Chaplin, and soon. It's amazing how well his films hold up so many years later, and after so many viewings.
I hear ya...The Kid is the one that I'm really waiting for and I have all the MK2 DVD releases that WB was involved with.

I believe they are OOP...you can get them on Amazon from "independant sellers", but looks like they're not very cheap.

Check EBay...maybe you'll get lucky...that is how I got both "Collection 1 and Collection 2".

If you don't have them yet...Amazon still has Image's collection of Chaplin's shorts, from when he was with the Essany and Mutual Studios...well worth the price as these are great shorts.

http://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Chapli...998693&sr=1-14

You can also get his collection of shorts that he did much earlier in his career, when he worked for Keystone. These were released by Flicker Alley and one of our elite posters, kndy, has had high praise for this collection. If I hadn't spent so much cash this month, I would jump on this now. I've got most of these on a Brentwood PD DVD set that I bought some years ago.

Fortunately store #2 had a couple good ones when I mentioned I already had a smooshed one.

Dreading what will show up in my BBS's shipping box, which I am having sent directly to me...
I had ordered the Josef von Sternberg "silents" and they came in a nice package...the three digipacks and thick book helped to give the very thin box some rigidity, so I only had a minor crease on the top of the box.

If they had gone with a smaller box, there might have been less instances of damage...even The Leopard was a thicker box than NOTH.

Yeah...I'm hopeful that the BBS set comes in tact...I was willing to live with the others, but will exchange this in the store if I see any significant damage.

And to top it off, Criterion went into blu-ray thinking digi all the time. So for all of the "I love what Criterion does 100%, or stop bashing Criterion" those people prob help the cause that MADE Criterion switch. I agree that the first batch of Criterion Blu-rays was very weak in terms of package. But they have been doing digi's for a long time. Why is it that the complaining started ever since replacement cases happened?
I heartily agree with you CG...I like the packaging on NOTH...but I think CC needs to go with a thicker cardboard on the outer box and go with a bi-fold design with a thickish book in the center...much like Seven Samurai. I think this would help to ensure less damage.

I haven't even seen it yet, but I really hope The Illusionist and Sylvain Chomet get nominated for animated film of the year. His last effort was wonderful and I have heard good things about this film.

Yeah, I have two of the MK2 sets that I love. It's funny, I used to think they were awesome restorations, and they are, but now I have to believe that they can look even better on blu. In addition to The Kid I'm excited about the possibility of The Great Dictator and City Lights, and I would love to see more of the shorts get included as well.

I suggest that Criterion remedy this situation by offering a replacement book program for TNOTH w/ twice as many essays so my packaging is perfectly snug.

P.S. I don't want this done because I'm OCD like some of you, but because my The Night of the Hunter blu keeps telling me she feels inferior standing next to her sexy sister Seven Samurai blu. I keep telling her it's the movie in your insides that counts, but she doesn't believe me and wants to get book enlargement. badum-CHING
I keep telling myself that once I've watched all of it and file it on the shelf, that I won't be looking at it that often. It is about the film and supplements.

My big thing when I get a BD or DVD is to make sure that any insert booklet is in decent shape, that the disc(s) are not scratched, and that the plastic area where the disc(s) sits is not cracked...especially in the case of digipacks with the thin and hollow plastic inserts that are used for seating the discs.

Besides...I'm awaiting arrival of this and besides the fact that it will in all likelihood come in tact...it's really cool looking.

I saw Never Let Me Go a few months back. Great film with incredible performanes by all 3 leads. Heartbreaking, but beautiful. Best cinematography I've seen all year, easily.

And I am really jealous you get to see Uncle Boonmee.

For those interested, it looks like the February titles are starting to show up on Amazon for pre-order. I haven't checked them all but did find Fish Tank and Sweet Smell of Success.

Yeah, it looks like four of the six blu-rays are up on Amazon. I don't see "Amarcord" or "Still Walking."

I'm all for that. Instead of throwing out the digi idea, just make them thicker.
