Hopefully, a Criterion release is in the cards. AFAIK the British BD is lacking in the video department.

The important and career-defining film for Sophia Loren and De Sica (Despite him doing Bicycle Thieves and Umberto D.)! Have been wanting to watch this one for months now! I hope they will release it with a new restoration (I hope Janus tweeting this is the case but I don't know if they hint their upcoming movies or just show stills of films they like but don't have.)

But if you mean River alone in the road at the end before getting in someone's car, I found that slightly more hopeful - almost like, life may never be ideal for him, but he's going to be okay.
I was talking about the first part but the second part you were mentioning was
[Show spoiler]also heartwarming because that, "someone" that you mentioned is Father I'm guessing because it looks like he had the same colored jacket.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think that was what I saw in the ending.

Forrester is not a masterpiece, obviously, but it has at least one very memorable line and three good performance by Sean Connery, F. Murray Abraham, and Rob Brown.

Milk is very good as well, even if the Diego Luna scenes in the middle kind of drag the movie down. As good as Penn is (and he's very good), Mickey Rourke should've won the Oscar for The Wrestler.
Might look into Milk. Haven't heard of Forrester surprisingly but might enjoy it since it has Connery in it. I also haven't seen The Wrestler yet even though a friend of mines recommended it to me years ago. Definitely should watch it soon

I hadn't bought anything during the B&N Criterion sale but on the last day (Sunday, August 2), I went for it.

Along with my 10% member discount and a $25 gift card I found in my house while cleaning last month, I purchased 3 Criterion blu-rays for about $32.

Here they were...

I wanted War of the Worlds, but it was TOTALLY sold out (everywhere), so I went with the Cassavetes movie (can't go wrong with his stuff).

Have you seen Until the End of the World?

I just finished that for the first time...all five hours of it.

What a picture.

...that might be Wim’s magnum opus.

I saw a much shorter theatrical cut decades ago but totally forgot what the story was about.

My Criterion blu-ray is still sitting here waiting to be opened, but I've yet to commit to a night to spend 5 hours watching this. That's a long time and is a major life-changing decision to devote 5 hours of my life that I'll never get back from watching a 5 hour film.

That being said... I plan to watch it. The soundtrack is incredible by the way.

I actually prefer the 159min theatrical cut over this 5hr director's cut. Not that I have anything against long films but, rather than a proper director's cut, the 5hr version just seems to be a load of stuff from the cutting room floor thrown back in. I think, perhaps, a serialised version of the original 20 hour cut (last I heard Wenders had a complete undamaged copy of the negative in his possession) might be the way to go as it will no doubt contextualise a lot of the extra stuff in the 5hr DC. As it is, it just feels like a lot of unnecessary hot air to me. But then I don't think it comes anywhere near touching the likes of Paris, Texas, Wings Of Desire, American Friend, or any of his documentary films. Your mileage may vary.

By the way, my favorite performance of his was as Blair in John Carpenter's The Thing.

He also delivered in Tender Mercies, The Natural, and Cocoon, all from his "heyday," the 1980's.
I've got a stack of pottery catalogs thanks to Mr. Brimley (RIP).

It's probably as well Criterion didn't do its usual trick of converting cartoonish artwork for B&W films to B&W - it'd be even worse!

I used to think their artwork for A Canterbury Tale (DVD) was the worst...

I went to B&N yesterday to grab some Criterion Blu's..... but I just couldn't do it.

My conscience would not let me spend $20 on a Blu Ray. (I know, I know, mock me all you want)

And there were so many I wanted.... oh well, back to scavenging second hand stores in the hope that I might get lucky one day and find some there...

Only spend what you are comfortable spending .
Even at 50% discount, Criterions are expensive for most people. Where I live (Northern Europe), you can go to a new movie in cinema and have two drinks and a large popcorn for $20 – just to put it into perspective. I do buy Criterions, but not too often, and only when there is a discount, because I also have to import them, making it even more expensive.

According to IMDb:
[Show spoiler]A short scene was cut from the end. It showed that the driver of the car that picked up Mike was his brother, and that Mike would be safe with his family. "I cut that end bit," Gus Van Sant says, "for a couple of reasons. First, it really tied everything up in a nice little bow. I think it works much better with the ambiguity. Second, I realized in editing, that the movie was about making your own families, not being tied to the one you're born with, and Mike's brother had been portrayed as kind of a dick, so maybe ending up with his family isn't for the best. Who knows who's in that car? It could be the love of his life, who takes him to Italy. I don't know."

Finding Forrester isn't a classic or anything, but it's very enjoyable.

The Wrestler is great.

Sean Penn is superb in Milk, but the reason I think Rourke should've won is that I'm not sure who else could have pulled off that role, whereas I can probably think of 5-6 other actors who could play Harvey Milk more or less as effectively as Penn did.

Lucky bastard. In the US, $20 will either get you one ticket to a movie or two drinks and a large popcorn. If you're lucky.

For a cut of that length, there should have been an official intermission! These crazy German directors have to have a bit of empathy for people's bladders!

It gets even better... For 20 euros a month (around $23, I think) you can go to the movies as many times as you want! You can get a subscription for either the largest cinema chain, or for a group that combines 40+ art house cinemas spread out over the country. Half of those cinemas are located in the capital and within 15 minutes cycling distance .

And they show so many classics... just had a look at this week's programming and noticed several Criterion releases:

• Videodrome
• The War of the Worlds (1953)
• Berlin Alexanderplatz
• Dead Ringers

We might be a little bit spoiled

May also explain why there aren't any real boutique blu-ray labels here; 90% of my collection consists of imports!
