The scan is fine, but the color grading was heavily tealed and the blacks crushed. But Criterion isn't known for fixing those releases and are guilty of tealing up several things themselves, so I doubt they'd try to correct it like they didn't and Arrow did Tree of Wooden Clogs.

Drunken Angel and Stray Dog are my two favorite Kurosawa films. I really do want a re-release for these two but the prints look pretty badly damaged. I hope they will give it a 4K restoration since it is a smaller Kurosawa title (In comparison to his samurai flicks).

That's been obscenely due for a Blu release; Criterion doing it would certainly be the best, but I'd be curious to know how they'd do the aspect ratios/cuts. Would one disc be dedicated to the Pitt/IMAX version and another to the Blanchett/"Life's Journey" version that never got a stateside release or would it be a three disc: one for the Pitt/IMAX (in both IMAX and 1.78) ratio, one for the Blanchett/"Life's Journey" version and one for the ultra widescreen edition?

dwk as much as I trust what you are saying 100%, I find that trully amazing given the number of pie charts on here which say DVD sales are huge and that Blu/ 4k disc sales are a waste of time

I asked somewhere a few months ago and someone said that Cox claimed Criterion wasn’t interested in upgrading. Don’t know if this is accurate, but will say I never see it in stock at any local b&n and wonder if it wasn’t a good seller On DVD, so that’s why no upgrade maybe

Linda Manz has passed away at the age of 58. She was so good in Days of Heaven.

I wonder what other Fortune Star titles could be released by Criterion. A Better Tomorrow and Once Upon a Time in China are both great contenders.
I’d kill for an A Better Tomorrow set.

2021 is also the centennial year of Satyajit Ray's birth. He has directed over 30 films in his career (mostly feature films, some are docs, others are shorts)

Criterion had already entered the blu-ray market when they began releasing his films, but there is still the DVD-only Eclipse set, while many others remain unreleased.

I think it would make a wonderful set and is #1 on my wish list for next year.

I'd def get this----box sets are appealing to me more and more because I like their set ups and how (the good ones, at least) kind of have an arc of their own.

In 2021, I would love to see a John Ford box set. Ten of his early silent films still exist in complete form. Many of his classics (Seven Women, The Wings of Eagles, The Informer, The Long Voyage Home, Cheyenne Autumn, Judge Priest, and Tobacco Road) are not available on blu-ray. Upgrades to other previously released classics, such as The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Grapes of Wrath, and How Green Was My Valley, would receive welcome upgrades.

Red Beard would be the Kurosawa film I most long to see get an upgrade.

...most inspiring film I’ve ever seen.

Default The Elephant Man

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but just like Mulholland Drive and the original 2001 disc, there's unfortunately a missing fade on the StudioCanal UHD of The Elephant Man at the 1:40:17 mark after Bytes locks him in the money cage then goes back into his trailer and throws out all Merrick's belongings. It's now a straight cut to black, which is not only wrong, it's jarring since the film is made up of fade outs and fade ins.

Curious to see if Criterion fixed this error.

They do have a batch of Jackie Chan titles (Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, Spiritual Kung Fu, The Fearless Hyena, The Young Master, Fearless Hyena 2, My Lucky Stars.) The Once Upon a Time in China trilogy were with Sony, so they may still have those.

I would assume that the vast majority of DVDs that push it to the lead are major studio titles that get carried at Target or Walmart, and, as such, doesn't really represent the business of the boutiques.

Does anyone know if the Cult Films blu-ray of 8 1/2 in the UK has the same transfer that'll be included in the Essential Fellini set?
