Crazier things have happened. The recent release from Flicker Alley, The City Without Jews, from 1924 was able to be restored by the Austrian Film Archive because a nitrate print of the film was discovered five years ago in a flea market in Paris! It was able to supplement the fragment they already had in their archives.

I just found a print of Murnau's 4 Devils under my bed!

Hard Boiled was released once by Fortune Star 8 years ago but lost rights to it. So, I do think they have a chance still. However, I do not know if it's going to 100% happen (So you may be right on that).

A Better Tomorrow has been on my wanted list for a while. I don't think it's worth getting the "4K UHD" boxset (This was a mistake as Fortune Star stated) with all three of the films but only the first one being the only one restored and not the other two. Fortune Star is really pulling strings but I'm glad I didn't buy it. If I can't get it, I will have to stick with my old DVD then which I'm perfectly fine with.

It's pretty cheap to just get the Nova blu ray release for ABT during their winter sale. If you're referring to the 'fortune star' japanese blu ray release of Hard Boiled from 2013, I'm pretty sure someone stated the cover was incorrect. The film's been with Mei Ah for quite some time. It was one of the golden princess titles that avoided falling under the umbrella of Fortune Star.

Wow, I never knew there was a winter sale for ABT. I might have to look into that.

Sorry for quoting you earlier! All the online research I've done for Hard Boiled and the DVD/Blu-ray editions always made me believe that it was Fortune Star. Nobody told me it was actually Mei Ah until now! Guess that chance is lower but I still do hope Hard Boiled gets re-released with a better looking restoration or transfer by any company that is willing to do the job (Criterion would be great but I wouldn't mind Shout or Arrow)!

Joking aside, with Jerry Lewis gone, I wonder if this will ever see the light of day. I'm really curious to see what it's like.

Only four more years until Jerry's restriction expires!

Speaking of Jerry Lewis, I would love to see a release of 'The Bellboy'. I wonder why that has never gotten a release.

Joking aside, no one's managed to find a complete negative have they? Lewis made a copy for himself but the last I heard was even his family/estate didn't know where it was, and the most anyone's been able to locate is the same 30-40mins that formed the basis of a few documentaries.

Having said that, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if someone miraculously managed to find one the day the embargo is lifted...

Criterion can go to town with the box sets as long as the newer restorations of already-released-on-BD titles aren't exclusive to the sets like with Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander.

As I understand it, Lewis had donated a copy to the Library of Congress, but it's not complete. I believe that's the only copy that's been documented to exist.

Criterion

The reason for the delay of the announcements might have something to do with Criterion's 'big' decision to go 4K.

But they need a selling point for the sets.
If customers knew that everything was going to be released outside the set what would be the point of buying the boxset..

I feel if they do release them seperate, have it be a year or 2 after the box set is released. This way its a win win. Customers who own other single releases will eventually be able to get new transfers and the box sets will continue to have selling points.

I'm fine with them waiting a year or two after releasing the set. That's perfectly fair, provided the new masters are at least uploaded onto the Criterion Channel in tandem with the set in question. Even so, I'd think it's still in the best interest of the Criterion brand to have standalone releases of flagship titles like 8 1/2 and The Seventh Seal with the best HD presentation money can possibly buy.

Although the original blu-ray transfer of The Seventh Seal doesn't appear to be vastly inferior to the one included in the centennial set. It's not a night and day difference like I imagine Amarcord will be.

I would legit be day one on an UHD of "Head" (especially if it included the "premiere" cut).

I would assume that those will remain boxset exclusives until the boxsets go OOP. However, if the 4K transfers are suitable, it wouldn't surprise me if they were released on UHD (assuming Criterion ever releases UHD.)

I have always wanted to see that movie. Didn't Grindhouse Releasing hint at it?
