I'm reading the news of the recently announced titles on the home page and I'm wondering what's the difference between "new 4K digital master" and "new 4K restoration of the film"? Thanks.

Yes! That's him who made it. He also made the Kino Lorber poster for Bacarau, Arrow Video poster for Black Test Car, Criterion's Claudine, Shout! Factory's Deer Hunter, and Film Movement's The Great Silence (RiFiFi1955's pfp). He's made countless several posters and they are all wonderful ones. My favorite one recently is the portrait of Setsuko Hara!

There is nothing to restore in The Irishman’s case because it’s a digitally shot film so it’s a “digital master”.

OH the irony!

I took part in Criterion's own 30% off sale earlier this year by placing an order that included a June title with an August title. The order would not ship until the August title is released... but now the August title is held hostage from shipping because the June title is out-of-stock!

The Blob (1958) takes on a new relevancy now in 2020, with its premise of the younger generation trying frantically to warn ignorant adults about an impending menace that grows larger in magnitude as it devours each new victim.

I hope that Criterion puts this out as one of the first titles if and when they start upgrading their existing catalogue to the 4K UHD format.

No need to get into politics here!

Anyone know - if you can at all - how to add an OOPtitle to your collection on the Criterion website?

That I just don't understand. If you love it, seems you would want to revisit it. 🖤

I'm excited about owning The Irishman.

Now, it would be great if Criterion cut a deal with Amazon and released Too Old to Die Young.

Not necessarily. For instance, I was hugely moved by Grave of the Fireflies, but it was so depressing, I never felt like watching the film again. Similarly, I avoided watching the Plague Dogs because it would be too emotionally wrenching for me. Not saying it's the same reason for Owl and The Irishman, but everyone has their own way of thinking about these things.

Unfortunately you can't where there is no "Add To My Collection" option.

Examples:

I can't add Last Year at Marienbad, even though it is still listed, as I bought it after it went OOP.

I also can't add the standalone release of PlayTime I bought used, as they took down the separate listing once the Tati set was released.

Bugger

I just bought The Life of Brian - it's nice to have titles that won't be on blu, but I stopped at Robocop seeing as I own it twice(three times if you count the arrow steel & Limited edition) even though I love that cover!
That must've changed when they revamped the site.
They should get that looked into. I recently contacted them about replacements - on hiatus due to llockdown until furthee in the year - but may get back to them to raise this up. Not that I expect anything to come of it

I believe it did.

The redesigned site continues to be pretty much a total disappointment.

Default Ak set

I've seen a few people on here expecting a Kurosawa set similar to the Fellini one. Is that confirmed in any way? I want to get more Kurosawas now, but it seems like a waste if there is coming a set later that includes more films that hasn't yet been released (like Red Beard).

No, just speculation for now as far as I've seen.

Its probably going to happen though. They obviously released box sets before (including AK100), but I think the Bergman box did so well they've realized how much their consumers are willing to buy these expansive type box sets.

That feature used to be so good; now it is utterly useless. I used to love scrolling down my list looking at what I have.

I have to agree. There are certain movies that I thought were excellent - but I have no desire to watch them again. Usually the movies are sad, like Titanic. For movies like that, it's one and done.

Yeah, more recently the documentary They Shall Not Grow Old is a film I was very moved and impressed by, but one I don't see myself ever watching again. Perhaps with more time I'll feel differently.

Well, I think there's a difference between films one might admire a great deal, but don't want to rewatch, and ones that one might love.

A friend of mine sometimes said of films (A Clockwork Orange and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover come to mind as examples), "It's one of the best films I've ever seen, and I hope to God I never see it again!"

One that I feel this way about is Leaving Las Vegas.

And, I think, length can enter into it. I loved Bela Tarr's Sátántangó, but its 7 hours and 20 minutes length makes it one I'm unlikely to revisit very often.

I have no idea why but somehow I managed to log in Hard Boiled, The Killer, and Last Year at Marienbad (Just right now). All the other OOP titles are available for me to add into the collection. I have no idea why they won't let that happen to other people. Anyone knows what happened???

I never got the chance to see the old website but I think the new website looks pretty cool, even though their entire collection list is really messy and maybe should've divided it into 100 spines per page or something. Same with Criterion Channel.
