Perhaps Criterion couldn't find a good enough copy of the public domain cut and so decided against including it...?
I assume that the estate feels that it is honoring Chaplin's wished by withholding the original cut.

It could be that they decided not to p*ss off the estate and ruin the good working relationship that the had with them.

Looks pretty good to me after a quick scan.

This thread over at Nitrateville seems to indicate that the entire uncut version was scanned and only then edited to be identical to the 1971 version. So I don't really know what the hold up is, other than the estate causing problems.

That or because it was the 30th anniversary, and it was already in the collection and it has nothing to do with Kino releasing anything

Hey everyone, I've been really getting into the films of Peter Weir lately.

I recently watched Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously, and then last night Dead Poets Society (which I haven't seen in like 25 years).

I own the Criterion release of Picnic at Hanging Rock and would love to see a blu-ray upgrade for The Last Wave.

I'd generally like to see more Peter Weir films in the collection too. Does anyone here have any suggestions for Weir movies Criterion could/should add?

Did you all realize that every single film of his on RT is certified "fresh" too? Wow! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/peter_weir

By the way, happy belated birthday to Peter Weir (his birthday was on Friday, 2 days after mine!).

Something that I noticed is that the past few years seem to be kind of box-set heavy; in 2019 and 2020 we either have or will get:
Godzilla Collection
Koker Trilogy
WCP 3
Bruce Lee Set
Varda Set
The Essential Fellini
Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman
BRD Trilogy Upgrade
Six Moral Tales Upgrade
Three Silent Classics by Josef Von Sternberg Upgrade

What are your guys thoughts on the seeming increase? Personally I kind of love it; its more cost effective for both consumer and producer and I think the thematic links often end up providing interesting additional resonance to the films.

They'll never be added but I would love The Mosquito Coast & to a lesser extent because it it's even less likely, Witness.

These films REALLY need some blu-ray love, no matter who makes them

Sorry but I actively choose to believe that Criterion wanted to steal Kino's thunder.

The Last Wave needs an upgrade, it's such a fantastic movie.

Not just for guilty pleasures, and don't be distracted by it's 10 Oscar nominations, Master & Commander is fantastic and I would very much love a CC edition

Here's a neat article on it's failed attempt at a franchise:

I love Weir. The Plumber and Cars that Ate Paris seem the most likely as they are with Janus. Some of his more popular ones with Paramount I’m not sure... but The Mosquito Coast, Gallipoli, And Fearless Feel like possibilities

Which is, of course, silly, since one films has nothing to do with 4 others. How exactly does it "steal Kino's thunder" by releasing a completely different film than the 4 they were releasing? (hint: it doesn't.)

Does Criterion own Do the Right Thing exclusively? I'm only holding off on upgrading to their version because I kind of expect the most popular Lee movie to get a 4K release from someone else.

Universal could release it in 4K themselves. Or perhaps Turbine in Germany would release it, since they released DTRT on Blu-Ray, and have released a few 4K titles. But no 4K release has been announced or even rumored so far.

Just realized we'd have to wait four years anyway. Stupid studios and their anniversaries.

Wasn't 'upset' in the least. Mildly annoyed at worst. I did end with a 'smiley' after all. My comment about 'seeing a good movie' was simply a little stab at levity, not some nefarious attempt to change the subject, as you seem to imply. I suppose I could have written "seen a Criterion movie" to maintain 'relevance' but whatever. And in any case how would I have had any idea what the consequent posting would consist of, or its relevance?

Really looking forward to the release of "Christ Stopped at Eboli"!! The Criterion release!

Have you seen Master and Commander? That's one of his more commercial ventures, a very enjoyable adventure and a terrific old-skool Hollywood production. The blu-ray for that one is a demo showcase for your audio setup. Of course, as of now, you still need to get the SE 2-DVD set for the mammoth Criterion class extras including the feature length making of documentary.

Totally. I love The Mosquito Coast. It's one of those rare adventure movies starring a first class actor (in Harrison Ford), yet it wasn't a blockbuster film at the time of its release.

Witness is a work of art too. I've only seen the film once or twice but its extremely original. Again, Ford is astounding in that one.

I've been dying to see Master and Commander! I wanted to wait until a definitive edition was released but it appears I'd have to spring for the old bare bones blu-ray and extras-heavy dvd. This film certainly can use some lovin' and a new release jam packed with lots of bonus features.

It's coming out in Australia next month, so I wouldn't be surprised if it starts appearing elsewhere soon:

^^It's from a recent remaster. 4K.

AFAIK the only blu realease this has is from Germany. Don't know what the quality is like but will get it because it's been decades since I've seen it & need to fix that

Witness is out on WA but is supposed tobe a crap release, no better than the DVD. Still, better than nothing?

It is probably one of my fave Ford films. Whenever I see it's on tv, my schedule is cleared. Mcgillis is great in it too

I just watched Witness in HD in my Apple movie library. Man, what an amazing work of drama. Ford and McGillis were electric in that. It makes sense since both actors were nearly born the same day in July (only four days apart). Two Cancer water signs could be a real powerhouse romantically.

Speaking of making waves, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing The Last Wave in HD soon too.
