Re. ADAPTATION, there's a new Shout disc coming out next month so that's off the table (and rightfully so) for a while. And it's slim on extras. There really is simply no need.

I've been OK with Criterion's output for 2020 so I haven't complained that much about their Japanese releases, but I really do hope they get back into that game. I'm sure a Kurosawa set is probably in the work, but I'm hoping they release some of the 200 titles they have that have never seen a physical release here as well as upgrading some of their more popular titles.

I've been happy with Criterion's 2020 titles so far: Fail-Safe, The Great Escape, The Cameraman, Destry Rides Again, War of the Worlds, the Bruce Lee and Fellini sets. Like others, I would like to see more Japanese films(Kurosawa and Toho non-Godzilla kaiju) but I can't complain with 2020.

Fail Safe came out this year??? Jeesh, I thought it came out a year ago already.

This is one of Criterion's better years especially since most of their stuff lately is more commercial so I'm sure they're doing well with some of those Netflix releases and maybe Parasite will also be a big seller. I'm not really happy or extremely excited for this year's films but I think it's great they're bringing back some of their OOP titles and finally Come and See getting its official Blu-ray debut. Nearly all of Criterion's OOP Blu-ray titles have been re-released by them, Kino, or Lionsgate within the past 2-3 years so I'm hoping they'll continue this on with The Third Man and Ran next year for a re-release, whether it's by Criterion or not.

The Bergman set is on back order on the Criterion website. I hope they get more in time for the flash sale.

That's what makes 2020 their worst year so far. Stuff other studios released, when there's zero need for a Criterion Parasite, etc, when there's already a 4K release. We don't need some black and white alternate version, we'd rather have actual black ad white films that haven't been released for the 3rd time already.

Just looking at Criteron's release calender for this makes it clear that they've been mainly releasing titles that have never had a proper region A release, so I'm not really sure what you're on about.

The best adaptation is The Killing Joke which is very marmitey. You either likeh it or not. There is no in between. I really like
The Killing Joke movie is only good if you skip the craptacular new material in the first 15 or so minutes.

Man, was that opening bad.

Hopefully it doesn’t end up like the Zatoichi set.

He responded back within 3 weeks & had a brand new sealed copy mailed to me which I just got yesterday & I was just wanting a new disc. Gotta love this company. Now I have a spare Criterion case to boot. All of this happened within 4 weeks, during a pandemic.

Sorry if I'm late to the party on this..."bronzed"?? What does that mean? I had a copy of Fritz Lang's M that I just recently had to trash because it quit working...when I flipped the disc over it appeared to be turning a kind of "bronze" color if that is what you mean...????

EDIT: Dammnit!! I just Googled "Criterion Bronzing" and got to their article on this! M is definitely one of the titles!! And I trashed it thinking I had no recourse!!

Yes, bronzing refers to the color on the back. It's often also coined disc rot, and often (but not always) results in eventual disc playback issues. Criterion has a page discussing this issue. Lang's M is one of the titles.

https://www.criterion.com/current/po...efective-discs

Criterion will also accept other discs that aren't on the list too. A couple years back I had problems with 8 1/2, Stagecoach, Kagemusha, and my Sanjuro discs, none of which were listed, but Criterion said to sent them in and they'll replace them. Me being the laziest person on the planet have yet to do that, but I'll get around to it

Sorry if this is question was already asked but has Last Metro ever been OOP? Seems like the Digipak is still pretty cheap to get but I've never seen it in my local Barnes & Noble for some reason. I know it's in print but on the front page of this forum listed it as OOP so I'm curious to know if it ever did go OOP before.

Buffalo '66 already has a very good Blu-Ray release. Why bother?

Haven't you heard? Studio releases don't carry any water in these parts.

Sorry to hear you weren't aware of the bronzing issue and tossed your M disc in the garbage. I recently went through all my suspected Criterions from the bronze list and luckily only those 2 titles I had were bad discs.

Having to mail them back is a bit much, why can't they just ask for people to take photos of them?
