Contact them first. Because of the pandemic, they are working off-site and are unable to receive any incoming mail anyway. If you get in touch with them, explain the situation and offer to attach photos of the bronzed discs, I'm sure they will help you out, particularly if they are titles on the known list of bronzed items.

Now I have a spare Criterion case to boot. All of this happened within 4 weeks, during a pandemic.
What happens if an out-of-print copy goes bad and Criterion no longer has the rights for the movie anymore? Are they able to offer replacement for those?

I apologize for this beforehand, but is there an updated list with all Criterion titles affected by the bronzing and/or playability issues?

They did exchange Howards End and Pierrot le fou(before it came back into print.) Usually, if they cant replace an OOP title, they give you the option of picking any same price in-print title.

I’ve gone through and checked all my BDs that could affected and found no trace of bronzing. I have also watched quite a lot of them over the past few months because of lockdown and didn’t find any on the list that struggled. My copy of Le Cercle Rouge did have a moment around half way through the movie but it only lasted a second or two and the remainder of the feature played flawlessly. Kinda glad about that one as it’s OOP

The Bergman set is back in stock on the Criterion website and it's also back on the Barnes and Noble site.

IIRC, i did have to give the disc a clean as it skipped at the beginning, but never actually got round to watching the whole thing
It's preowned so not ubexpected, will have a look at the colour of the discs later
Just a strange coincidence. Haven't watched the film fully though

I would be surprised if it had. When I got my copy a few years back from a B&N in Dallas, it was the digipak. The old super skinny digipak. I don't know if it's been updated since, but the checkout employee said that it had been sitting there for a really long time. That's surprising, as I'd think any Truffaut release would be a seller, especially in an arts district like the one I bought from.

Sorry if this is a random question but do you think that the Adventures of Antoine Doinel set will ever get re-released? I found a copy for a really cheap price and I'm not too sure if I should pull the trigger on this so any reply and opinion would be nice. Thanks in advance.

They still have the films, so they likely will get released on Blu-ray in some form whether in a Blu-ray version of the Doinel box or some kind of Truffaut set, only they know.)

Are we all in agreeance that the likely Flash Sale date will be October 6th? Or, do you guys have other thoughts? That would coincide with the re-release of Pierrot le fou. I expect that will be a big seller, and can't wait to get my hot little hands on a copy. That comes a week after The Elephant Man hits the streets. I have the 2014 StudioCanal blu-ray, but I will be double dipping to get the extras and a region A.

The other option is Parasite's release date, which hits October 27th.

This upcoming sale frightens me. I have an absurd wish list, and for once, I have a goodly amount to spend. Within a thirty day period, I've got the Flash sale, possibly the Warner Archive 4 for $44 sale (God help me), and I'm placing an order to import several releases and box sets from Powerhouse Films. They do free international tracked shipping on orders over £200 (which breaks down to about $250 USD).

I'm definitely grabbing The Complete Films of Agnes Varda.

These are also 100% buys:

The Lady Eve
Pierrot le fou
The Elephant Man
The Cameraman
The War of the Worlds
Marriage Story

After that, I have my work cut out for me. Both Jules Dassin releases are strong possibilities. There are a number of box sets I want. The Essential Jacques Demy, Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy. I watched Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival last night, so The Complete Monterey Pop Festival is almost a given.

Coming up with this order is always a lot of fun...and, a lot of work.

Thanks! Maybe I'll go ahead and wait for a Truffaut set then which I luckily haven't gotten any of his films yet so I'm hopefully waiting that they'll release them all at once. Still, I haven't heard any 4K restorations or any upcoming restoration for any of his films except for Day for Night. Hopefully, there will be a restoration for his films coming out soon!

A Truffaut set is pure speculation at this point, but it has been so long since they last released one of his films that it seems like they are planning one.

To expand a bit more on your question: I checked the front page of our Criterion topic, and I see what you're referring to. My guess is that The Last Metro being listed as out of print refers only to the first issue with the slip cover (see below). Scottie has Melville's Army of Shadows listed there, as well. That one actually did go out of print, as Criterion lost the license to multiple Melville films, including Le Circle Rouge, and Léon Morin, Priest. Army of Shadow was reissued earlier in April of this year when Criterion re-acquired distribution rights to it. They're about to do the same with Godard's Pierrot le fou. The Last Metro, from memory, is now issued with the Scanavo keep case. The confusion stems from there only being one listing. Maybe there should be a second, just referencing the film without the digipak designation.

As for the original issue, it's a real oddity in my collection, as I started collecting Criterion later than most of the other long time forum members.

Once the pandemic goes away, I'll probably buy updated packaging, as I did to replace my The Leopard original packaging, and archive the original packaging somehow.

My Spidey senses tell me a Truffaut set is in the works. That's pure speculation, but it makes sense now that they'd be able to access titles that were previously with Twilight Time. I have TT's issues of The Story of Adele H., and Mississippi Mermaid. I didn't get The Bride Wore Black, unfortunately. Those, along with films that have not received a domestic blu-ray release, like Shoot the Piano Player, together with all the films they already have (possibly with new remasters) would make for a great collection.

I'd pay handsomely for a definitive Truffaut collection.

Does anyone know the current licensing status of the other three films in this set? Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board, and Love On the Run.

NeoNical, given Criterion's penchant for exhaustive collections, of late, with Ingmar Bergman Cinema, The Complete Agnes Varda, and the upcoming Essential Fellini set, as well as Godzilla: the Showa-Era Films set, and the 100 Years of Olympic Films set, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Criterion had something similar in the works for Truffaut.

If I were a betting man, I'd put money down that either a Truffaut or a Kurosawa set (or both) are in the works for the near future.

I'd pay for a Truffaut set. I have the Artificial Eye release of Two English Girls but stayed away from their others since most have Criterion DVD versions and likely would be upgraded.

If there was a box set Two English Girls probably still wouldn't be included.
