I don't think there is every an agreement on the Flash Sale and at best is a guess.

Since the fall sale got moved to October
9-Oct-2014
6-Oct-2015
17-Oct-2016
17-Oct-2017
16-Oct-2018
15-Oct-2019

3rd Tues in October for 4 years is a decent enough trend (though 2016 was a Mon/Tues and they released items a day early that year to make them all eligible). The Hit and The Gunfighter on the 20th, the 13th with Claudine so I'd say 80% it will be one of those two dates with the 20th fitting marginally better.

Last year Godzilla released on Oct 29 after the Flash sale, 2018 it was Sisters and Princess Bride the 2 weeks after the Flash Sale.

Bruh it was 1910...

If Kurosawa is going to get a new boxset, I'm hoping there will be restorations for all of them because I already own all the Blu-rays so I'm not willing to double dip so easily.

There would be 12 anniversaries if they did it this year. We would have Rashomon (70), Ran (35), Kagemusha (40), Dreams (30), Derzu Uzala (45), Red Beard (55), the Bad Sleep Well (60), Dodes'ka-den (50), I Live in Fear (65), Sanshiro Sugata Part 2 (75), Scandal (70), AND his birthday as an anniversary this year lmao (110). I wouldn't mind if it doesn't happen during his birthday year honestly though...

For what it's worth, the 111th birth anniversary next year doesn't sound too much forced for a box set (unusual, of course, but...), so fingers crossed!

Where exactly in the film was the issue with Le Cercle Rouge?

That's surprising, as I'd think any Truffaut release would be a seller, especially in an arts district like the one I bought from.
The B&N price stickers typically mention the date it was put out for sale. There are times I've bought things at a B&N that had been there for years. When I bought my copy several years back, it was also in the original DigiPack, though I don't recall whether the date 2009 or not long after.

[Show spoiler]Or, do you guys have other thoughts? That would coincide with the re-release of Pierrot le fou. I expect that will be a big seller, and can't wait to get my hot little hands on a copy. That comes a week after The Elephant Man hits the streets. I have the 2014 StudioCanal blu-ray, but I will be double dipping to get the extras and a region A.

The other option is Parasite's release date, which hits October 27th.

This upcoming sale frightens me. I have an absurd wish list, and for once, I have a goodly amount to spend. Within a thirty day period, I've got the Flash sale, possibly the Warner Archive 4 for $44 sale (God help me), and I'm placing an order to import several releases and box sets from Powerhouse Films. They do free international tracked shipping on orders over £200 (which breaks down to about $250 USD).

I'm definitely grabbing The Complete Films of Agnes Varda.

These are also 100% buys:

The Lady Eve
Pierrot le fou
The Elephant Man
The Cameraman
The War of the Worlds
Marriage Story

After that, I have my work cut out for me. Both Jules Dassin releases are strong possibilities. There are a number of box sets I want. The Essential Jacques Demy, Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy. I watched Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival last night, so The Complete Monterey Pop Festival is almost a given.

Coming up with this order is always a lot of fun...and, a lot of work.
As hariseldon posted, it's been mid-month the last few years. Seems a fair bet it will remain that way. But whenever it happens, like you, my list is long - and I'm also hoping for a WAC 4/$44 event...

I have a $50 gift cert this time around, and these are my likely pickups:

1984
A Man Escaped
Magnificent Obsession
Scorsese Shorts
Sullivan's Travels
The Last Temptation of Christ
They Live By Night

I enjoyed every single movie in the Eric Rohmer 100 - Comedies and Proverbs collection by Arrow over the last few days, so I'll be buying Criterion's Six Moral Tales during the next sale. I've seen two of them on DVD. Wasn't as fond of them, but I'm sure they're worth a rewatch.

That's assuming B&N will even have it on Blu-ray. The last sale was a little disappointing. Still got more than I expected, though.

I'd love to be wrong about this, but I don't see Criterion ever releasing a complete Blu-ray collection for Kurosawa. I recently watched Sanshiro Sugata Parts I and II, and they were enjoyable films, but they were in really bad condition, and I'm not sure if the materials that exist are enough to really make it ever look that good. I believe the same holds true for some of his other early films too. So we might see an "Essential" set that doesn't include everything, or maybe includes some in DVD (or perhaps upscaled to BD). I do see the films were released in Japan in 2009, anyone know the quality of them? I would hope they're better than the Eclipse DVD's.

I recall the first Sanshiro Sugata having a reasonably strong transfer on DVD during the dvd era, of course I’m not aware of the source condition but it didn’t feel like the transfer I saw back in the day (in the Reg 2 UK release) was from a particularly battered source.

I don't know if it's a different source from the Eclipse DVD, but the one i watched was full of scratches, and other issues. It's not unwatchable, but it would need an extensive restoration in my opinion. I can't remember which one was worse right now, though I did find one review that said Part II is considerably worse, so maybe that one is sticking out more to me.

Edit: Okay, it's definitely Part II moreso than the first, as DVDbeaver also confirms it's the worst one of the Eclipse set:

Quote:
Worst looking transfer of the boxset. Lots of flickering contrast. Missing some frames (jumps) in beginning. Very damaged (see last cap). At times barely watchable - requires extensive restoration. Some parts are okay - others severely limited. Great to see the film though and probably the best looking DVD of this one available.

Definitely can see that and that's just one of the few reasons why I don't believe in a Kurosawa boxset but still am hoping for one. It's also worth noting that Sanshiro Sugata Part 1 lost a good amount of footage because of censors.

Anyways, even if a boxset wouldn't happen, I would still hope that Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, and the Bad Sleep Well get Blu-ray releases even though I think the first two titles that I mention seem to not be in the best condition, I'm hoping that a 4K restoration should be able to take care of the damage and not that it's impossible or inevitable as the Sanshiro Sugata series.

There was a Red Beard restoration a few years back and I keep hoping for that at least.

I've looked lovingly at that set the same way I looked at their Varda set. Truffaut would be a great subject for a complete career retrospective, and I imagine the extras would be exceptionally interesting.

I guess it was wishful thinking that they would come earlier in the month. But a few more weeks won't hurt, and that likely means another month's money to play with.

I haven't decided yet if that's a good thing, or a bad thing.

I missed the last two WAC sales because I got lazy, and wasn't checking the Warner Archive thread. I have a lot of catching up to do with them.

I love that they're starting to release more of the Tracy and Hep movies. I want to own them all. I have the Woman of the Year Criterion, the Twilight Time of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and the Fox Desk Set release. Warner Brothers has five of their other six films together, with only State of the Union being owned by Universal. Of those not yet announced, Adam's Rib is my most wanted title.

All the releases on your list are on my want list save for They Drive by Night and The Last Temptation of Christ, which I already own. Magnificent Obsession is high on it; I'll likely pick it and All That Heaven Allows up during this sale. Douglas Sirk opened my eyes to how entertaining well done melodrama can be. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson were quite good together in both films. I've got Imitation of Life slated as one of my movies to watch this week.

1984 is another I would like to add immediately. I have the OOP Twilight Time, but the Criterion is loaded with extras, including an interview with Roger Deakins. That is a big selling point, to me.

I still have not seen any Bresson, I'm ashamed to admit. And I own Au hasard Balthazar. I've been so caught up working on my DVR recordings that I've neglected my blu-rays.

I know these films aren't worthy of coming back but I really wish to see Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula with a Blu-ray release (That won't go OOP so soon). Hoping that Criterion, Arrow, or maybe even Blue Underground (Which I think is the most fitting to release) will eventually get this film out of the way and released already.

As others have said, it might challenging to have the earlier Kurosawa films have Blu-ray releases as there simply might be lacking materials. Still, Films like Red Beard, Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, Drunken Angel, and Dersu Uzala are essential films and really hope Criterion gives them the HD treatment. The only reason I can fathom as to why we haven't had a Criterion Kurosawa release in years is that they are planning something big.

If they do choose to push into 4K, Seven Samurai would be an obvious choice to start with. So that may be cooking up.

I have a question for those of you that have seen both Band of Outsiders and Le petit soldat: which is the better Anna Karina film? By that I mean which film do you feel better showcases her talents as an actress? If I end up cutting my list down a little, I may wait until the Spring to buy one of them.

For fans of Anna’s work, in general: what other films do you feel are essential entrants in her filmography? These need not be limited to works on blu-Ray. If I’m unable to get a physical copy, I’ll stream it. I’d like to explore more of her career, and while I could simply look up a list of her best films, I’d like to put together a set that specifically demonstrates her versatility. Vivre sa vie was my introduction to her, and I’ll be picking up Pierrot le fou during the sale.
