b.t.w., what I’m referring to here ^ is not the availability of a 3D 4K 48fps version (good luck in seeing that type of presentation at a Regal theater come December) …what I’m referring to is whether theater-going folks will have the opportunity to see a 2D 4K version of The Hobbit. That’s still questionable at this point in time.

Yes but even though it's 35mm aren't they done at 2K? From what i know anyway.

some films were scanned at 2k, but as long as you have the film elements you can always rescan at higher resolution.

And they scan it at 2K because it's easier/cheaper correct?

So my original post wasn't really wrong. There's plenty of 35mm movies with 2K resolution.

^ I know. I realized that (it was Mike), it’s just that Sap was trying to help out another member on this thread, so I figured he deserved a little break with regards to the tone of the response. Good intentions, etc.

Don’t worry about it.

It gets confusing. In ‘theory’, Anthony is entirely correct.

In terms of real world probability as to future redo’s, see -
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ed#post5749061

as RiseDarthVader asked a similar question last Feb.

and technology at the time (don't forget that studios have the digital masters in very low lossless compression or even uncompressed, so if a 2k scan was more than enough for the DVD released in 2000 why try and go 4k and 8k and have needed 4x and 16x the storage when nmany TB of storage were hard to come by?

depends how you want to play it but that is why I did not reply to your original post that most moviues are 2K but I did to this one asking the question comparing 35mm and 2k scans.

The way I see it:
Anything shot digital at 2k or lower can't be helped. *
Anything shot on film scanned at 2K where a lot of CGI is added in can't be helped. *
Anything shot on film with no CGI but there is no longer viable film elements can't be helped.*
Anything shot on film scanned at 2K where there was a little CGI added in might be helped * (if the studio decides to re-scan and re-apply some new CGI which why I went with only a bit of CGI)

Anything shot on film and there are still usable film elements can (and should) easily be re-scanned at higher resolution, just in case something happens to the film elements. and most films fall in this category. Also before we started moving to HD studios started re-scanning since it is always to downconvert during compression in order to give the equipment more to work with. that is why in DVD days a lot was scanned in 2K and when BD came out they bstarted scanning at higher resolutions.

* I put a star because I am a firm beleiver that upscaling with top of the line professional equipment is much easier for a studio then the normal person at home and even though it can't add real resolution I beleive that the final result will most likely be better then what can be done at home.

Jarred says you’ll hear more about REDRAY on November 30.
And what’s the significance of November 30th...an unassuming lad might ask?

Well , it be 2 days after Sony’s planned official event fully introducing the F5 and F55 cameras.

I love the strategy of these marketing guys in the 4K biz.

Thats how i read it. I might be a little off. I don't fully trust that chart anyway.
Thanks that makes it better, I think this chart is old too I think I remember seeing it like 5 years ago or longer?

That makes sense, Anthony P. Thanks for the explanation. It's just that i see alot of old films, and new, with 2K. And aren't some movies from a 2K scan just cropped for the BD release?

Wow. This is crazy.

So another war is coming up?????? And From reading that thread RED will be using a different compression and not H.265? This is gonna be fun.

But, if PS4 does have 4K resolution then history will just repeat itself.

Don’t look at the situation as being like a glass half empty. Sometimes, like with this…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ty#post6689125

People need a stern kick to get them off of their complacent arses (for example, fans should stop paying the ticket prices they do to watch Arsenal play, that’s for sure). RED has an unquestionable commitment to 4K. Given the challenges from other types of content delivery (other than physical media) as well as viewing devices other than traditional-sized living room TVs, some members of the BDA apparently wonder if 4K BD is even worth the trouble so, rather than aggressive pursuit in implementing an innovative technology, we have a drag-your-feet/wait-and-see attitude, click on the link in the first paragraph here… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...66#post6556166

If it wasn’t for RED, the adoption and implementation of 4K file-based cameras would have been much longer in the making, as the traditional players would have been perfectly comfortable to rest on their laurels and milk-to-death things like tape-based HD cameras (and their accessories) for as long as possible.

I see RED’s involvement in consumer 4K as a glass half full. If anything, it will provide an incentive to the other players to move things from the back…to the front burners. As far as a ‘war’, or even a serious skirmish, RED would have to build up a stable of content providers….but, on the other hand, it’s truly amazing what Jim (Jannard) has done…and can do in the business world if he puts his mind and resources to the endeavor.
