This is not available for sharing, but I just wanted to show you guys a neat project I did for a client a few months back.

He wanted a cover for the Sequel Trilogy, to match the official releases of the 2011 Original and Prequel trilogy sets.

I am not a big fan of the artwork style, finding it completely haphazard in both design and execution, but I had to come up with something that would match.

Apart from the creative bit about making front artwork from scratch, the unsung effort in something like this is how much time and effort it takes to recreate the layout and text of the spine and back, matching the original just about perfectly.

In the end I think it makes a good companion piece to the other two.

Suggestions - take or ignore: I would tint those troopers reddish so they don’t stand out so much. Maybe Rey’s lightsaber too. I do not see bright objects on the first two covers. I also recommend reducing the glare behind the Star Wars logo to make it stand out more. Your choice.

I authored this TV series to Blu-ray yesterday. When cataloging the title I repurposed the DVD cover art. Turned out better than expected.

I'd share the full size cover art, but unfortunately I sized the image down by mistake and wasn't able to revert back. Doh! I only needed the above front and back cover images anyway so.

This is a little project I worked on for the "unaltered 4k discs" that are out in the wild. Sorry for the poor quality pics, took them on my phone and the lighting wasn't the best:







**I'm not promoting piracy...just sharing the art of my project! The discs are printed on a Rimage Everest 600 Thermal printer which gives a very authentic look and feel.

Every now and then I stumble on this thread again and enjoy the artwork. Most of the time I would generally prefer the original poster art. The vhs artwork is often nostalgic as well for titles during the video store era. It sounds fun to go with these, but at the same time I also generally will honor the artwork that is official for the release since that is what I paid for. But there's no denying it'd be nice to see an original poster art for releases that do not have them. With ocd, I'm not even sure how I'd go about it since I don't use an inkjet printer and even then I'm not sure if I'd be satisfied compared to a professional print job compared to the studios.

Well, it's been a while since I've worked on custom covers until recently. I actually started another project that I'll eventually post about, but put that on hold when I managed to order and receive this Blu-Ray set from Germany (which the company selling it cannot ship directly to the USA):



In short, it's the entire series of both He-Man and She-Ra on Blu-Ray in HD. Without going into a ton of detail, beyond the picture quality looking great, it is pretty much the most accurate and comprehensive set in terms of having all of the episodes/content in as complete and accurate of a manner as possible (previous DVDs had some issues, minor edits, etc.).

I finally managed to order one when another site that has been getting small batches of them from time to time had some more in stock. I missed out on previous occasions.


Anyway, as nice and fancy as the set is, it is ridiculously huge. There's no way to put the entire set on a typical DVD/Blu-Ray shelf. Within the set, the discs are housed in digi-packs (which are of standard Blu-Ray case height), but there's no outer sleeve for them. So if I put them on a shelf, dust would settle over the disc trays over time. Also, there are no titles on the spines of the digi-packs, and the discs overlap, which is a huge pet peeve of mine.


So, I decided to begin work on some custom covers for standard Blu-Ray cases. I have a couple of design ideas in mind that I'm probably going to make (not sure which I'll end up using yet), but tonight I started on a set that is inspired by the look of some of the old VHS volume releases from the 80s.

Using that general style, I started on the covers in this style for the He-Man series (2 total, 1 for each season). I went with a "simple" design where one cover is Prince Adam as he is about to transform, and the other is He-Man just after transforming.

While these do look relatively simple (and weren't the most complicated covers to make), they still required more work than is obvious at a glance. The main images are screen shots taken from the discs, and Ihad to try a few filters to get the right look that I wanted. Also getting Castle Grayskull to look the same on both covers required a little effort. In the image captures, after transforming, the coloring of the Castle is much darker for some reason. I wanted it to look mostly the same, so I had to do some work of merging aspects of the two images together to get the cover for Season 2 the way that I want it.
