You most definitely do not need Photoshop. GIMP is a great free-ware alternative for image manipulation. I've been using GIMP for 12 years for all my of graphic design needs.

Beyond that, you wouldn't need anything additional besides a printer and the correct paper unless you plan on printing elsewhere.

I've got an update for everyone. Spent a good bit of time this evening extracting the background from the back portion of "The Lost Tales" retail cover art. It went surprisingly well I think. It was a very tedious process, but well worth it in the end. See below.



Every pixel I removed that was sitting on the artwork in the background needed to be replaced with what I visualized would have been there obviously. It was quite a challenge. Once I had a clean slate I then had to bring the upper and lower portions closer together in order to achieve the spacing that I wanted for all the elements that sit on top of the background. In the process the image collage had to be tweaked as well, each pic needing to be reduced in height slightly. And here's what the finished product will look like.

The above isn't quite finished yet. I have a few tweaks I still need to make and some finishing work left to do on the background for the back portion. Going to take the weekend before making the cover art available. Time permitted today I'll make "The Legend of the Rangers" cover art available. Worse case I'll make both available on Monday. In any event, just thought I'd share. Happy TGIF to everyone.

I've been working on this for the last couple of weeks. I enjoyed making Criterion covers lately and wanted to make some for movies not in their collection. I didn't want to make "fake" Criterion covers, so I figured I'd make my own collection, so to speak. I know BasedSpacer has his own collection, I'm not trying to step on his toes. I've done my best not to do any movies he's already done. Some of these covers are artwork I've found online, others I've tried my hand at making cover art. These are sized for normal Viva cases, I can do Scanavo cases if someone wants some. I did these for myself, but I figured I'd share in case someone else might enjoy them.

I'm very envious that John Carpenter's Archive Collection Zodiac is approximately a hundred times better than my Fake Criterion of that one. *pout But yeah, if you could make a Scanavo-sized version of that, John, I'd love to replace mine on the shelf with yours.

Those are all so good. I'm constantly striving to do a little better with my work, and you guys keep me motivated. Anyway, five more from me later this week; they won't be as good as these. Check back in maybe 2031...

I have a question for the forum, hopefully I can make sense of this.

I have been using the standard Criterion template that you can d/l from anywhere to make my artwork. It is sized 3220 x 1896 px for a printable 14mm spine. The width of this spine is 160px.

I found a dealer who sells Criterion-sized Scanavo cases for 4 discs, with a spine of 22mm. I would quite like to make a few Fake Criterions for 4-disc sets. (The Ocean's films? Ghostbusters? The Indiana Jones sequels? Sky's the limit!)

How do I adjust the size of the template to accommodate 8 more millimeters of spine, and what should the new dimensions be? I use GIMP and, being something of an idiot, could use an idiot-proof how-to. Thanks in advance!
