THE EXORCIST: THE VERSION YOU NEVER SAW.

That was a travesty. Friedkin should be physically restrained from "revising" any of his films.

Have to disagree! I find BOTH versions of "The Exorcist" fascinating!

Donnie Darko (great film with an AWFUL AWFUL Director's Cut)

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (an UNRATED cut, it adds 30 minutes and RUINS the pacing)

Its really only like 14 minutes of deleted scenes. Not 30.

I would agree that the R. Donner cut is a weaker version of Superman II.
Revenge: DC is a lot weaker as well.

The only version of The 40-Year-Old Virgin I have ever seen in the extended cut, and I've never had a problem with the pacing. ALL of the jokes in that movie are gold. Hell, even the twenty hours' worth of deleted scenes on the Blu are full of big laughs.

Superman II?? I thought that was WAY better than the original.

And, aside from the pointless rape scene, the DC of Halloween was just fine with me.

Apocalypse Now Redux. The added scenes just bog down the pace of the movie, especially the French plantation scene. That really doesn't feel like it belongs in the movie at all. I was excited to get a longer cut of such a personal favorite, but I was really disappointed with it. I should probably give it a second chance just to be fair.

I have a VHS copy of Boogie Nights that appears to be a full cut before editing. It has the time code at the bottom throughout the film. It is definately not better than the cut that went to theaters. It has MUCH more nudity and explicit language, as well as some domestic violence scenes that simply weren't necessary. I actually loved the final cut of Boogie Nights.

I prefer the theatrical cut of C.H.U.D. over the longer Director's Cut. I know about the diner scene and all, but I just preferred the editing and pace of the TC (as well as the funny bits of dialogue mentioned on the CHUD thread).

Has anyone mentioned the first ALIEN as well? I love both versions of ALIENS, but that "director's cut" of ALIEN released in the early 2000s was pretty pointless. It didn't fix any of the continuity errors (like the disappearing cup when Mother activates in the beginning), nor took liberties by cleaning/adding any FX*... they just added some tints and slimmed the editing between scenes.

* not saying ALIEN "needs" modernized F/X; I'm just saying that if you are going to do a "special edition", have some fun with it. Preserve the original, but have fun with the SE (improve the star fields; get rid of matte lines or the hydraulic arm lowering the Nostromo model; add external visuals outside the windows; etc)... otherwise, what's the point? In the end, the ALIEN DC was just lazy.

Ridley Scott explained the reason behind it on the BD intro. Fox wanted to re-release Alien in cinemas with additional footage but he objected because the theatrical cut was his directors cut but he made a compromise and re-edited the film as an alternate cut. It was marketed as a directors cut by the studio

Enter the Dragon the extra 3 or so minutes slows the pacing at the beginning and makes the small snippet at the end pointless.

Alan Smithee isn't a real person. It's name they tag on when the director don't want his/her name to the project.
