Tropic Thunder's "Directors Cut" was mostly pointless. A few extra/changed jokes.

The Warriors was stupid. It felt like an over-correction.

The Town. It added 30 minutes of pointless content that messed up the pacing of the film.

+1...but in Costner's defense, it isn't a "director's cut". His cut is the theatrical version.

DaVinci Code blu had a directors cut. Really slowed the pace of the movie

I'm assuming Lucas' Special Editions count? Even though he didn't direct Empire or Jedi (and is thus fouling in the nest of two deceased director's graves).

Agreed.

I listened to the commentary of the extended edition, and Afflek says over and over about most of the added scenes that he knows it wasn't necessary and that the scenes probably slow the film down, but he just wanted to put them back in because he liked the scenes and the subtle ways they changed the story. Yeah, it is indulgence, but I can respect the guy's desire to see those scenes put back in. The theatrical cut came with the director's cut so no harm done.

It's funny how much The Warriors is mentioned in this thread. I just picked up the theatrical DVD release tonight at Half-Priced Books, even though I already have the blu-ray DC release. I've never seen the theatrical version - I'm pretty excited to check it out now.

I really wish we could get the Theatrical cut on blu-ray. The seamless branching was so poorly done on the DVD that you couldn't even watch the Theatrical cut and I love this movie.

Painfully true. I got rid of it soon after the purchase because I hated it so much and did the same thing with "The Warriors" after I saw how badly they desecrated it.

Horrible.

An extended cut, yes. Only released in Germany, I think. Just 4 minutes of useless deleted scenes put back in.

Stargate. It was better when they didn't explain the things that supposedly didn't make sense in the theatrical cut. Other than that, all it seemed to add was a new opening and more French Stewart.

I prefer the theatrical cut of C.H.U.D. over the longer Director's Cut. I know about the diner scene and all, but I just preferred the editing and pace of the TC (as well as the funny bits of dialogue mentioned on the CHUD thread).

Has anyone mentioned the first ALIEN as well? I love both versions of ALIENS, but that "director's cut" of ALIEN released in the early 2000s was pretty pointless. It didn't fix any of the continuity errors (like the disappearing cup when Mother activates in the beginning), nor took liberties by cleaning/adding any FX*... they just added some tints and slimmed the editing between scenes.

* not saying ALIEN "needs" modernized F/X; I'm just saying that if you are going to do a "special edition", have some fun with it. Preserve the original, but have fun with the SE (improve the star fields; get rid of matte lines or the hydraulic arm lowering the Nostromo model; add external visuals outside the windows; etc)... otherwise, what's the point? In the end, the ALIEN DC was just lazy.

Erik The Viking - Actually cut by the son of the director, but still not great.
THX 1138 - stop adding pointless cgi to your movies, George!
Mallrats - Interesting to see but it really takes the flow out of the movie.
Watchmen: Ultimate Cut - I know it was in the graphic novel, but those animated Black Freighter scenes really take you out of the movie.
Dumplings - I thought it worked much better as a short than as a full length movie.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), the director's cut created 20+ years later cuts out an entire character and several scenes from the movie.

Troy - the Directors cut has added gratuitous violence and totally unneccessary additons that adds to an already long run time. The theatrical version is a decent flick. The DC is worse.
