That's what I was thinking.
If studios think lower cost, why not encode for a 25G support, and use thus DL 30Gb HDDVD and SL Blu discs ? That is for the studios using "lowet common denominator" obviously. Viewed like this, BR definitely wins the lower cost side of the argument...

Default PIP bandwidth Q

Insiders (Kjack?): Does the use of PIP on a title--EVEN IF IT IS NOT BEING DISPLAYED--eat into the available video and audio bandwidth? In other words, does a title with PIP have a lower bandwidth ceiling for the main feature than one without? Or does each video/audio stream have its own dedicated bandwidth?

I ask because I'd hate to see a feature's bandiwdth availability curtailed "just" to support PIP...

can anyone tell me why "the Da Vinci Code" and "The Natural" never got released as announced? No real explanation was ever released AFAIK.

paidgeek, can you pass a request to SCE? I wish that all PS3s from all of the regions can playback PAL and NTSC discs for those discs that were recorded as Region all. Right now only HK/TW/SG PS3s can do it. I don't know about EU/AU ones. Thanks!

paidgeek, is there a rationale behind the pricing of SPHE's BDs? Some are lower and some are higher. Is it due to the extra discs or the content itself? I look at the pricing of Blade Runner: The Final Cut and I still can't believe how cheap the price of the 5-disc set is.

(puts five dollars in the coffer) Thanks, paidgeek!

Only the 2 movie discs of Blade Runner are actually HD. The other 3 are DVDs because there wasn't enough time to do the extras in HD. The price would certainly be much higher if they were, hence the price discrepency.

I'm pretty sure that DaVinci Code was never officially announced. When the DVD came out they said the BD would be pushed into 2007 to allow for a proper special edition, including HD extras.

Now, with the prequel/sequel, Angels and Demons, coming to theaters in late 2008 it has been stated by SPHE (at some International Conference if I remember) that DaVinci Code on BD will be release in late 08 to tie in with the movie.

The fact that some websites and/or distributors had this listed for later this year was an erroneous listing, as noted by paidgeek from SPHE many times.

Was just about to post something related to this, so I'll just add on.

Paidgeek (or Penton even?),

This trend of $40+ MSRP movies from SPHE is a little disturbing. Spiderman 3/Superbad from amazon are going to be $30 and probably closer to 40 at a brick and mortar store -- is Sony expecting them to sell at those prices? Most of the BR owners are PS3 owners -- I can't see a lot of them justifying that kind of price when they could get a full game from the same store and end up with a lot more for their money.

I know I didn't get into Blu-ray with the expectation that prices of movies would actually rise over time and I'm not very comfortable with these prices after hearing that Superbad would be a 43.95 MSRP title (just Spiderman and Close encounters being expensive could be explained by them being special releases of sorts... but a normal day and date comedy?). That may be the first time I actually go for the DVD over the hi-def version.

Is SPHE just testing the waters or is this a new pricing standard from Sony?

Thanks!

Hey mods,
Do we have a *hottest thread on this forum* or some such designation to give a heads-up to people ?

If not the hottest, I find this thread at least the most interesting from today.

LOL,
I'll let Paidgeek handle that one.

Seriously, I have nothing to do with how these things are priced.

Walmart has all three Spiderman (trilogy) for $68.87
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=7080108

that's $23 each

Amazon has Spider-Man 3 (2-Disc Special Edition) for $29.95
http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-3-T...blurayforum-20

Many times MSRP does not translate very well to actual selling prices.

I would like that in my US PS3 also.

Oddly it can play back MPEG2 file sources at PAL rates and res, just not the region 0 DVDs...

I did a search and only found a few posts that were a few months old, sorry if it has been answered already.

Can any Insider, or anyone who knows, give any insight as to what the status of some of the postponed titles is? I'm looking specifically for:

Jerry Maguire
Marie Antoinette
Hannibal
Silence of the Lambs

Thanks.

Count me in on this, I have a number of PAL discs which simply will not play in the PS3 (but WILL play in a Pioneer DVD player bought here in the United States).

@ Insiders:

Who handles standardization of new disc formats? The BDA I assume? How long would it take for Hitachi's 100 GB disc format to be accepted (assuming it can be used by all/most existing players)? It's not that I don't think 50 GB is enough for movies, but for TV shows on BD, a 100 GB disc could be a real boon (ditto for epic length movies). Also, not that the current bitrate cap is necessarily bad, but if you're going to add 100 GB discs to the spec, if possible, it'd be nice if the bitrate cap were raised.

PentonMan, Paidgeek or any other insider, is there any reason to be nervous about Warner speaking at tommorrows DVD Forum conference?

The insiders have requested that we not ask questions pertaining to titles not officially on the schedule. All four of those titles are indefinitely delayed (and I believe they're all from Fox Studios, from which we have no direct representation in any case).

I know they requested to not ask about movies that were not announced, but as these were and then delayed I thought they were fair game. But if thats the case, I will just wait it out. Also, both Jerry Maguire and Marie Antoinette are Sony, Hannibal and Silence of the Lambs are MGM.
