Baring that…………
#1 movie I want on Blu – Lawrence of Arabia (didn’t even have to think about that)

#1 Hardware upgrade choice - DTS-HD MA decoding in my PS3

“Anything like that” – All future Blu-ray products to be delivered to my house by Jessica Alba.

Have a good weekend folks.
If my calendar is correct, paidgeek should be spending an *off-site* this weekend with Sony Electronics people…….maybe he’ll bring back some goodies.

Arguably Kaufman's best film?

I would say without question! I'm a huge fan of that (great) movie.

I didn't want to speak for anyone else, but I definitely agree with you, Rob! Adaptation is a completely brilliant film. Now, I must admit to being a huge fan of Malkovich as well, but Adaptation is just stunning.

So I dont have time to read through all the pages and I just wanted to ask... Any news on Bad Boys 2? Watching the upconverted DVD now. It should look very good and I dont even want to think about uncompressed audio on it

I am a fan of all of Kaufman's work, but Adaptation is truly something special.

Have you seen "Stranger than Fiction"? Very "Kaufmanesque"!

BTW, I have a poster of your avatar hanging in my theater!

Thanks Penton! Apologies for my choice of verbiage--- didn't study entertainment law & didn't want to pretend I knew more than I did. I do know enough (I think) to appreciate the relevance of the 4k scan . And I remember the '92 restoration; of course, I was still involved in the (ahem) legitimate theatre at the time. (2002 I think I was pretending to be a gigging musician...) At any rate, this is much better news than I'd hoped for: again, thanks!

Nothing to apologize for.
No problem with the verbiage at all because they do have it……..in their vault, where it is now not being mishandled as it was prior to Sony acquiring it for its library.

You probably know that this film (#19 or #20 ? on the AFI ranking list) has a historical relevance in that Kazan testified in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee, which some people still to this day have not forgiven him for (despite his intentions) and anyway On The Waterfront debuted two years later in 1954 and many observers feel that the actions of the Terry Malloy character (played by Marlon Brando) were an attempt by Kazan to explain/justify his testimony in front of the Congressional Committee two years earlier.

I think he denied it, but the similarity is thought provoking.

I can understand why some folks have yet to forgive Kazan; in principle, I'd find it hard myself. Have you read his autobiography, Elia Kazan: A Life? I recommend it to everyone who even pretends to give a crap about theatre or film. After I read more about the long devolution of his relationship with the American Communist Party...I dunno, but wholesale condemnation of the man seems too simplistic a response.

Naw...it means now I'm the stay-at-home dad 'cause my wife's job has federal Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

(Edit: don't think I don't know what does on in Van Nuys... )

come on Pento we all like it when he gives us his vision of the future where your movie is interrupted for an ad from the insurance agency and where if you want the loss less track or the extra language or the subtitle you will pay extra and DL to the massive HDD on your player.

This got overlooked, reposting in the hopes there's some info out there. =) I'm guessing Talk would be the ideal person to answer this, but any insider with info on this would be welcome:

Who handles standardization of new Blu-ray Disc media/formats? The BDA I assume? How long would it take for Hitachi's 100 GB disc format to be accepted (assuming it can be used by all/most existing players)? It's not that I don't think 50 GB is enough for movies, but for TV shows on BD, a 100 GB disc could be a real boon (ditto for epic length movies). Also, not that the current bitrate cap is necessarily bad, but if you're going to add 100 GB discs to the spec, if possible, it'd be nice if the bitrate cap were raised.

First of all, thanks to all the insiders who post here, this is quite possibly the best and most informative thread on any site anywhere!!

Paidgeek, is there any possibility that Sony would even consider making SD-DVD playback on the PS3 region free??
I bought a Hong Kong PS3 to allow me to play Region A BDs, but then of course realised that the only SD-DVDs it will play are NTSC discs from Hong Hong (I think; it certainly doesn't play Region 1 or PAL Region 2).

So at the moment I have the PS3 for Blu-ray, a locally bought 360 that will play Region 2 SD-DVD and nothing else, and a stand alone DVD player that's region free.
If the PS3 was region free (or even Region 1!!) it would allow me to get rid of the DVD player, making one less box on the shelf and sating Mrs Horseflesh somewhat (especially if she lets me get the new TV)
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=19805

My other option is to buy a US PS3 and sell the Hong Kong one, but that would be a bit of a pain in the arse and I'm not hugely keen on buying hardware online/overseas (I bought my PS3 from an English guy who delivered it direct to a friend of mine in the UK)

I believe I know what an overscan monitor is, but my feeling is that is mostly tied to the analog CRT monitor era. Does the term "overscan" and "underscan" really apply in this digital age (CRT or not)? The HD specs specifies the number of scan lines and you can easily read whether your digital monitor has that number of lines (I thought most do).

some HD displays still add some overscan to the image. you normaly have to select somthing like FULL PIXEL for the tv to do a full 1:1 image with no overscan. but yeah, it pretty much applies more to broadcast SD material and not HD.

Also, since we don't have a Fox insider here, maybe you or Penton could pass a pat on the back on to them regarding The Day After Tomorrow. The picture quality was definitly the best I've seen to date. It will now be the title that I use to show off Blu-ray. The wait was well worth it.
When I finished Dracula the other night, I was actually angry at that reviewer who gave it such a poor picture quality score. What was this guy doing watching the picture with his glasses off??

The PQ is really quite good, and the sound is excellent. The softness in the picture really adds to the mood, especially when all of the lights are off in the room.

The sound is very good for sound that is 15 years old. I liked the way some of the sound effects just hang into space seemingly unattached from any speaker location.

This is the best I have ever seen this movie look. Good show Paidgeek, and good job Sony!!

Day After Tommorrow comes tomorrow(uuh LOL) no pun intended

So, this might also explain why I've seen (Mom's) Olevia LCD displaying a changing pattern of white dashs in the top scan line? It is HD, but does appear to be some sort of broadcast network code?

Thanks!

I couldn't agree more. I just watched Dracula last night and thought it looked fantastic. It is far and away the best transfer of Dracula I have ever seen. Two thumbs up for SPHE on this transfer.

That's UNDERSCAN. You're not supposed to see those white dashes of code dancing on your HDTV.

If you have a Sony BD, run the 7669 code (SONY on the numeric keypad of the remote), and there are a couple of screens that will run. One screen will let you know if you have overscan or not.

paidgeek, if PHL has their disc compatibility checking facility, does Sony DADC have the same setup? Or do you do your checking in-house prior to mastering ie BD-R/RE?
