paidgeek-

Congratulations to you and your team on the perfect review of Open Season! I can't wait to see it.

Don't know if you're at liberty to answer this question, but are "Crouching Tiger" and "Winged Migration" delayed indefinitely like "Legends of the Fall", or do they have a more near-term release window, i.e. within the next quarter or so?

Also, a different kind of question...with all of the work you do from the technical side, does that ever make it difficult for you to just kick back, pop in a Blu-Ray and enjoy the movie without mentally picking the transfer apart? I would imagine it would be tough to just shutdown that part of your brain for awhile, but I was curious how you cope with it

All of these titles will be released eventually, but I know we are taking another look at Winged Migration for possible release this year.

Regarding your questions about my personal movie watching, I have trouble finding enough hours in the day. I bought an expensive full rez LCD panel when they first started coming out, and we do watch Blu-ray movies from time to time. As long as I am sitting at about 5 picture heights back (not optimum to be sure), I don't notice many problems. My biggest complaint is that my older LCD has poor black reproduction (Sony did not have a full rez panel when I bought this one, a Sharp). I'll be upgrading probably this year.

Tsk, tsk, you don't own a Sony television?

Can I ask, when you do upgrade, what will you be getting? LCOS? DLP? LCD? Plasma?

I don't know how much corporate synergy is there, but it appears the universally-renowned "reference" flat panel (as in, closest to what the studios use) is the Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 plasma. I hope the "geek" is getting "paid", 'cause it MSRPs for $8000, although one should be able to find it for a G or 2 cheaper. If you have any connections with Pioneer, try those . At least it will strengthen BDA relations!

Plasma discontinued by Sony in 2004.

I will probably get a 52" Sony LCD. We helped develop some features for that set, so it only makes sense I should buy one. I do like the Pioneer plasma though and we have one in our office for testing.

paidgeek,
As you may know, Sony movies on BD have calibration tests when you key in 7669 from the main menu. How do we use it to calibrate our HDTVs using these screens?

Has anybody else figured this one out?

I must admit, I wonder this myself. I've never known what exactly to do with these test patterns.

Same here, a description of each element of that pattern screen would be useful (and satiate my curiosity ).

paidgeek,

I would just like to say that I have been very encouraged by your calm and concise dealings with the Microsoft contingent and their followers, using actual examples instead of hand waiving and exagerations to make your case.

I feel now that I no longer need to take Amir head on with his ridiculous assertions.

If you end up at NAB I would like to buy you a beer (assuming I get to go this year also )...!

Cheers!

If you get a chance check out the DVD essentials and apply what you see there... you may be able to rent it...

But the patterns usually show geometry, black level, white level, colour purity etc. and I imagine there are similarities to the DVE disc.

Also check out Display Mate - they talk about this stuff a lot - there may be something on their site that will help you determine what each pattern is for.

Thanks for the comments. I think the MS responses have seemed a bit desperate lately. SPE does not have anything fundamentally against VC1 or MS, but they are shouting so loud I can't help but think something is wrong.

Is the Japanese release of Kung Fu Hustle the unedited version?

paidgeek,

thanks for keeping your cool over "there". It speaks volumes about you.

I have a question. Yesterday, Ben Waggoner made two claims. 1.)they could have done Open Season better in VC-1 and 2.)AVC is "not good" with film grain. When he was called out on it, I believe he went silent.

Just today you posted something along the lines of, "Casino Royale will put that myth to rest". Can you elaborate what you perceive to be the genesis of his comments? Why does this myth exist? Has there been recent improvements to AVC that MS is not aware of?

We understand you are in some sort of evaluation period with VC-1 so that you may not be able to talk too much about VC-1. Anyway, your comments about AVC and the "grain myth" would be an appreciated education for some of us.

Thanks.

While not paidgeek, I believe this myth exists because Microsoft created it.

Most of what I hear from 'real' people and reviews is that VC-1 encodes seem to be smooth compared to even MPEG2, so I have no idea where Ben gets his idea from that VC-1 is the grain 'king'.

Perhaps paid has a better understanding of it but from what I see it is simply another 'we know more about this than you, trust us we are Microsoft' statement.

I know our insiders will have to be careful with this, but when you get a chance, take a gander and any comments or insights would be appreciated.
