The good news is, all the major brands have plenty of receivers that fit the bill, you DO NOT need one that decodes DTHD or DTS HD MA by itself. Personally I like the way Yamaha receivers sound. Find one that fits your wallet!
thanks much for the info all.

Sorry - this is all a bit confusing. What receiver would be a good pair for the PS3 in order to listen to the PCM tracks then?
Thanks fo the info hollywoodguy! As long as I can get the full benefits of decoding DTS HD MA w/PS3 paired w/the 605 I don't care how it is handled really I hope we will ba able to soon! I picked up FFrotSS and the DTS core track sounded pretty good. I want to hear it in full blown DTS HD MA as it was intended to be.

Thanks for the info all, sounds like it is the right decision to go with this, and hope that Sony releases a firmware update sometime soon that addresses the DTS-HD MA decoding.

I appreciate the info hollywoodguy, but my concern is not as much about passing bitstream vs internal decoding, as it is whether or not both versions of the PS3 (60GB/80GB) will get the same firmware update to either (a) decode DTS:HD-MA or (b) pass it as bitstream to a receiver. It has been stated many times on this thread and others that the commonly held belief is the 60GB has a different chipset than the 80GB and thus the 60GB may not be able to do anything with HD-MA.

I am trying to determine if there is any functionality difference between the 60 and 80GB aside from backwards compatability, of which I'm not overly concerned. If the 80GB PS3 has a better chance of either passing bitstream or internally decoding HD-MA, I want to know so I'm not stuck with a PS3 (60GB) that is great for PCM and TrueHD but can't handle HD-MA.

I apologize if this sounds harsh at all, it is not at all meant that way. I'm just surprised and disappointed that there is so little of this information out there for the differences between the two models and that Sony has seemingly yet to provide it. Of course, if they would just release a firmware update (if possible) for HD-MA, passing or decoding, this wouldn't even be a debate/fact-finding misson.

Thanks for the patience!

Any insiders heard anything on the new BD100 discs, their possible compatability with current players and intentions for use in the future? Limited to PC-based use or also usable for movies/games (PS3)?

I mean they argued and argued with this guy until they found out that his everyday job was doing 2K and 4K scanning at Cinesite London at a helluva alot higher level than an intern.

To this day, I still don't think they believe him and probably think he was biased because he hated dealing with the FX work and the 4K pipeline.

Oh well, back to the salt mines.
Hm. As the originator of that thread, I maybe should resent that jab.

But never mind, considering that Warner Bros. not only saw it fit to scan my favourite movie (Blade Runner) in 4K, but also had the visual effects shots scanned from 65mm to 8K (then converted to 4K), to generate a 4K digital intermediate and master.

Quote:
“Honestly, I got to go through 977 boxes and cans of mag, IP, INs, 65mm visual effects comps, 35mm original dailies … everything ever printed,” [DVD producer Charles] de Lauzirika says. “I saw amazing, amazing material — much of which we've been able to pull and put on the DVD in some form, even if it didn't make it into The Final Cut.

“I think The Final Cut is the best version of them all. The picture and sound on it are just astounding. We really put a lot of work into the restoration, and we transferred the actual original neg at 4K, and it just looks stunning. Even more stunning are the visual effects, which were originally 65mm elements, then scanned at 8K. It looks like 3D. It's so sharp, with all these details that I'd never seen before.”

Your receiver DOES NOT have to decode the advanced codecs in that scenario.
But it must be able to handle the PCM via HDMI as the PS3 does not have analog outs.

Does Universal have a similar deal with Toshiba/Microsoft that keeps them with HD-DVD? Would explain a lot.

Such as the Halo 3 LE DVDs.

Paid(Penton), Sony(and others) are obviously using more and more AVC/TrueHD istead of MPEG-2/PCM. Will Sony continue to make codec decisions based on every movie alone or do you see a move against 100% AVC/TrueHD in the future? If so, in what time frame? 2008, 2009?

Also, is TrueHD the only option for Sony, or is DTS-HD MA under consideration?

Default BD 2001 Extras?

Anyone have insider information whether the upcoming BD release of 2001 will have the same extras as the two-disc DVD edition being released this month?

The Warner Bros. website is sparse with information. Someone posted on Amazon that the two-disc DVD release will feature the following bonus materials:

* Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood
* Theatrical trailer
* Channel 4 documentary: 2001: The Making of a Myth
* Standing on the Shoulders of Kubrick: The Legacy of 2001
* Vision of a Future Passed: The Prophecy of 2001
* 2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind the Future
* 2001: FX and Early Conceptual Artwork
* Look: Stanley Kubrick!
* Audio-only interview with Stanley Kubrick

I also recall the Criterion laserdisc release from years ago included shots of the rotating space wheel from outside on the soundstage. Pretty cool, if you've never seen it.

Wickey, I think Teazle ^ viewed some of the later photos down the line from the Bunny House last June. They do indeed get a bit more risqué (as the alcohol kicked in) but, I think they still pass censorship.

Not at all Grubert.

Yes it seems you originated that old thread but, you weren’t one of the guys that went on a personal crusade to prove their point against someone with 10-15 years of experience in the industry having attended comparison demonstrations with all sorts of source material to make a judgment.....who had no horse in the race, one way or another.

Don’t get me wrong, I applaud WB for doing 4K scanning of the Blade Runner (and I would love SPE to someday scan Lawrence of Arabia at even higher than 4K) but it’s my opinion that by the time this material gets laid off to a high-def optical disc – whether it was scanned at 2K or 4K aint gonna mean a helluva alot. In fact, I would venture a guess that if you made sure the prescription of your glasses was current and correct (if you do wear glasses) that would be more significant than the subtle differences you may note during your home theater viewing of this title esp. on screens smaller than 100 in.

The real benefit of the Blade Runner project that I think you will appreciate when you view this upcoming Blu-ray disc at home is that fact that it apparently got a good restoration……regardless of the 2K or 4K scanning aspect. The 4K scanning is great for the preservation of this classic, possible future Digital Cinema presentations and home theater enthusiasts that may benefit from the next magnitude resolution leap in their equipment.

At least that’s my opinion ……I hope Michel isn’t reading this.

I see that we just gained another Insider (not including the Belgium Beer dude, who is also welcomed for his particular expertise )

Anyway, I’m referring to Robert A. Harris.
For those viewers unaware of his background, here is an old link, i.e. Statement at the Film Preservation Study:Washington, D.C. Public Hearing, February 1993……………………

Welcome aboard Bob.
There's even a welcome thread for you floating around here somewhere for people to chime in.
