Europe (and various other parts of the world) tend to support the "ITU Standards" more then the "FCC Standards" of the U.S.
The FCC Standards hark back to the original "Grand Alliance": 720i(30) / 720p(30) / 1080i(30) (30 frames per second/60 fields per second if interlace). These are effectively "broadcast standards". This does not keep various manufacturers from supporting non broadcast rates of 24p / 30p / 60p at 720 or 1080. The ITU supports the following (much more diverse) set: 60p 50p 30p 30PsF 25P 25PsF 24P 24PsF 60i 50i I know... clear as mud. |

So can current display handle this extended colour or is it only on displays like the ruby, pearl jvc HD1 that have extended colour gamuts?

Is the core YCbCr preserved, or are the colours redistributed through the space? Gary |

To the insiders: Disney's Chicken Little has been released. One of the features is a director's video commentary on certain scenes induced by BD-J.
To me, this shows ONE way of PiP being done with current BD hardware. Unlike a running video commentary ala M:I-3 on HD-DVD, some titles do not have a running video commentary or do not need one. By doing it the way Disney did it, more interactive or more interesting content can be presented on BD. What do you guys think? fuad |

If I understand correctly, xvYCC allows more colours to be represented. While deep colour also allows more luminosities of the same colour to be represented. Deep colour is primarily to kill the gradient contours we see sometimes, and probably has more impact on the viewing experience than xvYCC. It would seem that two possibilities are to transport xvYCC to the set for decoding, or to do upconversion to deep colour and transport that. Gary |

Paidgeek - have you guys thought about releasing Spiderman 3 on BLu-ray one week before it comes out on DVD with a massive advertising campaign? That would be a good one for sure, and I mean on the regular SD television channels as well, not just the HD ones.
This has worked many times well. Pearl Jam released Vitalogy in 1994 two weeks early on vinyl ahead of the CD. I don't know how well it sold, but lots of people knew about it. I think Spidey 3 would be the perfect disc to do this with. |

It's very true imo -- and part of that is giving people that extra "excuse" to buy a new console/player. And I certainly think more than a few people would love to show off their new BD player with a movie their buddies can't even buy yet...

So, outside the normal YCbCr range is adjustments to core definition to make it more accurate? i.e. YCrCb value represents a closest approximation, and then it's refined with the extended range info? I guess might as well ask the direct question: Can xvYCC be encoded into BD/HD DVD and playback OK on current equipment (players and monitors) with no knowledge of xvYCC? Gary |

The main problem with being too far ahead of the DVD is that crooks could burn DVDs from the master BD recording. So, alas, if we ever do see this it will only be a week at most. Gary |

I'll pass the idea along, but keep in mind that the theatrical advertising is really where most of the awareness comes from... |
