This is not likely to show up in the PS3, but it is going to become routine HD displays. Sony will have several models that do this starting this Spring. I know other companies will as well.

paidgeek do you know why the PS3 does not scalle 1080p BDs to 720p like all other HD players on the market?

I don't think we will provide both LPCM and DD THD as a standard feature. We don't mix our films in 7.1 (with 4 surrounds) so it is not likely. We may experiment with 24/96 especially with music driven product. |

As far as I am concerned, just keep releasing titles with LPCM as you are now, as I don't need to worry about being able to decode TrueHD, DTS-MA etc.

I, too, look forward to back-catalog material. Some studios have released various B&W collections such as Marx Brothers, John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn collections in the last year or two that I would love to see on BD, both for the detail and the wider aspect ratio. That said, I also note that many of these collections did nothing to clean up the dirt in their prints. I worry that would be the same case with a BD version. Still, I hold off buying in hopes of interesting (remastered) boxed set releases sooner than later. Cheers! |

Some Sony SXRDs already do proper inverse telecine for 1080i. The VPL VW100 tested well with film based sources, but like most deinterlacing solutions outside of the top names (VRS/DVDO, Gennum, HQV, Faroudja) has some problems with video based material. |

Paid: you mention A Few Good Men and Seven Years in Tibet. Anything else you can tell us about? In the "other" forum you mentioned Starship Troopers will be very grainy. Was it MPEG2 or AVC? What kind of soundtrack will it have, and will the extras from the DVD SE show up on it?

Not necessarily. The PS3 could take the 24P stream and just scale each frame down to 720P without any intermediate steps. For a TV to scale 1080i it would first have to convert it to progressive before scaling it down - a lot of HDTVs don't bother doing some kind of inverse telecine for 1080i, so the result is that you lose a lot more quality than you otherwise would. My guess is a lot of them just convert to 1920x540P and then scale that to 720P instead, meaning you lose even more resolution.

What's strange, and maybe I'm mistaken, but the XMB videos on the hard drive do scale accordingly.

So I'm not really much of an insider to the actual Blu-ray industry but my girlfriend is a manager at Macy's and by this summer all of over 800 of Macy's stores will be using Blu-ray players for all their displays and for all their security video back up systems.

Hello paidgeek,
I read over at avsforum that Sony might release the upgraded Fifth Element sometime this summer. Would you please confirm if this is true or not and would you please share any specs or features that will be inclueded in the re-released Blu-ray movie. |
