Is that a permanent price drop?

Default Budget player suggestion

I got to thinking while talking about the formats on a different forum- both BD and HD DVD have pretty bad attach rates. I have to wonder how large a percentage of the players out there are not connected up to HDTVs, or even have HDTVs but use say s-video or composite.

One way of "solving" this would be to make a budget player with just a HDMI output, say by a Chinese manufacturer (I don't exactly think of Sony as a budget brand). It would only be able to be used with HDTVs, and since it's HDMI it would be able to detect the maximum resolution and automagically set things up. The manufacturer would also be able to save on costs by not including analog outs as well. Part of the attach rate problem is the knowledge and equipment needed to take advantage of HD - without seeing the difference there's little incentive for your average consumer to bother buying discs. Normal disc prices (not just bogos/sales) also needs to come down, but I consider that more of a long term thing.

Would such a design be marketable you think? And any insiders feel like communicating it to the appropriate people? Or would this entire line of thinking be contrary to the whole hidef = quality?

I don't think it's marketable right now

Analog outs will be discontinued in 2012 anyway

As far as I know, Yes. It will remain that price through the end of the year, but remember it doesn't start until the 16th. [Jim]

Is this a prediction or a fact?

It's supposed to be fact.

ADVANCED ACCESS CONTENT SYSTEM (“AACS”)
INTERIM ADOPTER AGREEMENT

Look Analog Sunset

Units made after Dec 31, 2010 must honour the Jan 1, 2012 activation of the restriction to a maximum output of 480p (SD) over analog.

Units made after Dec 31, 2013 can't output any video over analog (composite, S-Video, or component) that was AACS based.

And, at some point, the studios can activate ICT (image constraint token) that will limit all current decks to 960x540p output over component.

Anyone know why WB postponed the Song Remains the Same? Something to do with the Zep reuninon concert today?

To our Hollywood insiders:

I just caught a report on CNBC earlier this afternoon talking about the current writer's strike and its effect on the various studios and their parents (GE, Viacom, Disney, etc.). In the report, they mentioned that DVD sales were down 1% last year, and are projected to be down another 3% this year.

The question is this: How seriously are the movers and shakers in Hollywood taking this news, and how much/little do they expect HDM to help hold the line against the loss of DVD revenue?

HDM won't hold the line unless a serious move is made this year to end the war. Warner Bros. or Universal have the power to unify the market. Only then will studios be able to effectively resell catalog titles on HDM in the quanities necessary to replace declining DVD revenues.

And we'd better remind that the biggest proponent of this ICT was Warner, and at that time, Mr. Alan Bell was leading the technical group of WB...

Insiders: Please tell me this will come out on Blu-ray! The reviews I've read stated Led Zeppelin was flat-out amazing. If any concert deserved to be archived and presented in a lossless audio format...

AHMET ERTEGUN TRIBUTE CONCERT TO COME OUT ON DVD. Good news for the millions of people who want to go to the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert on Monday, but aren't able to - the event will be recorded for a DVD release. The show, which pays tribute to the Atlantic Records co-founder, will feature performances from Foreigner, Paul Rodgers, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and, most notably, a reunited Led Zeppelin. There's no word on when the DVD will hit shelves.

Paidgeek,

Will the upcoming Resident Evil High Definition Trilogy be coded All Region?

I read over at dvdtimes that Resident Evil Extinction would indeed be coded All Region which is unusual for a day-and-date release.
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=66312

I assume that Resident Evil and Apocalypse will be All Region since they are catalogue titles now.

Any light you can shed will be much appreciated

The insiders are extremely busy preparing for CES and will most likely be very busy until CES is over, so don't expect a lot of activity from them until then.

I think I've already asked this, but it bears repeating --

If the new pressings of region-locked titles are to be region-free one year after the initial release, is there any way of knowing this for the international customer?

It would be especially useful if the most internationally-friendly online store, Amazon, could have that information clearly (and definitively) displayed on the product pages. Right now, the region coding info on Amazon is a crapshoot, with many unhappy international customers as a result.

Owning a Region A player in Europe, I don't have these problems myself, but they are a big issue to my friends and BD supporters who don't want to pay $50 per title, which is the going price here. And, thankfully, HD DVD doesn't exist in my neck of the woods, so it's not like they're all going to turn Red as a result; but supporting them by simply offering full information where it matters would help more than is readily apparent.

Please try not to interrupt the flow of my posts as I’ve only got about 10-15min. of typing time.
Here goes………

I have to apologize to highdeforum, as I’ve been informed *I live in a trailer in the desert* on the forum on highdefdigest, which must be another place with a red ant infestation.

P.S.
I’m moving the trailer to Palm Springs in Jan.

Regarding this past post…………..
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=6796

I’ve been asked if I think that rdjam, the petition man, is a paid MS blogger.
I don’t know and I don’t much care. If he is, they certainly aren’t getting their money’s worth, given the quality. He likes to talk authoritatively on topics that he is absolutely clueless about. I turned him off a couple years back when he was making comments in regards to the effects of the application of grain reduction on 4K DI’s vs. that on 2K DI’s which was the largest load of cow manure I think I’ve ever seen posted on the internet.

Regarding my linked post above, I was commenting upon what has happened in the past at both an individual recruitment level, see –
http://www.sapiensbryan.com/index.ph...-paid-blogger/

and in a more insulated fashion through intermediaries such as Federated Media………
http://www.betanews.com/article/Blog..._Ad/1182798586

I have no reason to believe that the same shenanigans are not happening still in some form or fashion in the high-def optical disc war forums/blogs. These people don’t get religion overnight.

And in regards to any public denials by anyone in the business, I don’t know if you all are old enough to remember talking heads for years (even under oath) stating…..”Nicotine is not addictive.”
Or more recently in the past, one talking head (the one with the hair, as the other would have told the truth enthusiastically, I imagine)…”I did not have sex with that woman---Monica Lewinsky.”

I received a PM asking if SPE did the encoding on David Gilmour: Remember That Night.

Answer – No.
He(D.G.) likes to control pretty much every aspect of his productions and he had somebody across the pond do the work.
