Paidgeek- I finally had a chance to watch "Layer Cake" and I must say that I was impressed with both the video and audio quality of this disc. The PQ was outstanding, and the audio was simply stellar. In fact, in the final scene (I won't give away what happens) the audio literally made me jump out of my seat.

All things considered (based on the director's comments) this was a relatively low to mid budget movie, so I was surprised at how great it looked. Was this film already in good shape or did you guys/ladies have to spend a lot of extra time on it?

Please pass on my compliments to your team.

Do the BDA have any plans in place to counter the recent news of 2m chinese hd-dvd players for q4 07 to 08+, and will the BDA consider reducing player prices sooner rather than later to compete or will the BDA simply bury there heads in the sand and pretent this is not happening? this is a serious threat just when BD was going forward.

(of course the articule needs to be confirmed, but i have confirmed it is HD-DVD and not blu-ray it refers too sadly)

Sony could do Blu-ray a huge favor by releasing Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray before DVD.

Even 2 weeks would make a huge difference and generate lots of positive press.

I go a step farther ...BDA studios should release all the upcoming summer blockbusters early for Blu-ray this fall to help promote Blu-ray. This will push their DVD titles close or into the holiday season which will help their bottom line in terms of DVD sales. Its a win-win situation. Imagine Spider-man 3, PotC 3, and The Simpsons coming out a month earlier than the DVD versions. It will move Blu-ray players, increase BD sales, and increase DVD sales to boot.

paidgeek,

have you guys considered this sort of strategy to drive adoption of the next-gen format? I would be curious to hear your thoughts.

I must agree. This looks very promising to say the least.

Generally, the more exclusive the club, the more benefits the club member has. Why should this be any different? Make people want to be members of this exclusive club. I have no doubts this would work...well.

Its not like the studios are denying any titles on DVD ...its just a little delay to nudge those fence-sitters over.

People might also see this as the norm. They wouldn't just think, "Hey, if I get a BD player I can get Spidey 3 a little early. I can get all movies a little early." That would certainly entice me, especially if they came out on Saturdays, since sometimes stores are sold out on Tuesdays by the time I get off of work.

Yes but don't forget about the people who will return the Blu-ray because it doesn't work on their DVD player :P.

According to my local retailers that almost never happens, It's mostly HD DVDs (he showed me a stack of Mission Impossible box sets...)

A Blu-ray cover DOESN'T have the DVD symbol on it.

In fact, all BDs have stickers on them that says only for use in Blu-ray players or PS3 (or something like that).

I would agree with this statement. When I worked at Best Buy, people would always buy HD-DVDs thinking they would play in their upconvert DVD players. For this reason, I have always questioned the HD-DVD sales numbers, because I'm unsure if it subtracts returns or not. Since the launch of both formats, I have never seen a BD disc come back because someone thought it would play in their DVD player.

This is one reason why there are a lot of combo HD-DVD and DVD titles on the market. For all we know 10%-20% of the people are buying these combo discs and playing them in a standard DVD player. That is why I have always said one should compare HD-DVD non combo sales to BLU-RAY sales since a certain percentage of the population is playing these discs in standard DVD players. No one knows if the percentage is 1%, 10%, 20% or what. BLU-RAY could always play this game and come out with stupid combo’s.

That is a complete scam! And I agree with your fair comparison scenario...

I would like to see Blu-ray promoted in every creative way possible, but the studio would not do something like this. The main reason is that the retailers would be very upset with us for inconveniencing loyal customers who just aren't ready for HD yet...

How about including a coupon for a free BR in the DVD?
