As per this news

From CED reprot

Shipments of standalone Blu-ray players will reach 2.5 million decks this year, giving the format the upper hand over its HD DVD rival, Ken Lowe, vp-strategic mktg. at components supplier Sigma Designs, told analysts in a quarterly earnings call. In fact, Sigma, once neutral in the next-gen format war, now sees Blu-ray emerging as the “defacto standard” by year-end, Lowe said.

Sigma previously said 2 million Blu-ray decks would ship this year (CED Nov 21 p1). With PS3 factored in, total 2007 Blu-ray hardware shipments will reach 8.5 million units, Lowe said. Sigma expects its SMP-8634 media processor device to go into 1/2 the Blu-ray decks shipped, he said. It customers include Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sharp and Sony, Lowe said. Lowe has treaded warily in next-gen DVD waters because it supplies chips for HD DVD backer Microsoft’s IPTV platform .

Can Kjack add anything to this? Does this sound right?

To paidgeek: Immortal Beloved has just been announced on BD. I recall this was one of the key movies being mixed in 7.1 SDDS to sell the format to theater owners.

I suppose a 5.1 PCM will be included. But will a 7.1 mix that came with the SDDS format be used, since DTS HDMA can create a similar speaker arrangement?

Huh?

SDDS 7.1 is Left-Left Center-Center-Right Center-Right, Surround Left, Surround Right and LFE. Neither Dolby TrueHD or DTS allow for the center speaker arrangements in their HD optical formats.

But, I'm sure you could mix it into the two back surrounds of a 7.1 format and tell the disc buyers to move those two loudspeakers to the front (how confusing would that be?).

call Sony. If you do not have a receipt then it is considered "out of warranty". Send them 50 dollars and they will send you a cardboard box to ship it back. Try saying it was a gift or something else.

Thanks.
Several critical milestones have been completed, so I think the first BD+ titles will come to market any week now...

It is not likely that we will provide a 7.1 in SDDS format since it would be unlikely that consumers will set-up 5 identical speakers across the front. FYI, Spiderman 3 also has a 7.1ch SDDS mix...

I guess it's time to ask:

Is there going to be a trade-in program for those with the original BD release of The Fifth Element?

You’ll have to ask paidgeek about that.

I know I promised someone, somewhere to post a pic of the cover art of The Fifth Element (Remastered) on Blu-ray.

Well unless I inadvertently snapped a pic of the old version (I’m jet-lagged ), these are piecemeal pic(s) of the back cover of the Remastered version.

Please no jokes about the B&W photography, hell at least it demonstrates packaged media, not an inferior quality HD digital download.

I suspect a pic of the front cover has already been posted somewhere on the world wide web already, and if not, you’ll just have to wait.

I should post the basis for all this. This is what Ken Lowe said:

Quote:
As I reviewed last quarter, Blue has the most studios, the most content available and the most consumer industry manufacturer's support. As a result, according to the announcement earlier this year from both Blu-ray and HD DVD associations, expectations are 8.5 million Blu-ray capable devices this year versus 2.5 million for HD DVD. Extracting the 6 million PF3s that Sony has projected, this leaves about 2.5 million standalone Blu-ray players according to these figures. We remain cautiously optimistic that we will see as many Blu-ray players sold by the end of this year, with Sigma having over 50% market share.
Goodness knows where he got the idea Sony is predicting only 6 million PS/3 sold this year. The 2.5 and 8.5 million is what Disney claims from the associations in their ads in Home Media Magazine.

paidgeek, I wonder if you could illuminate how the PCM and TrueHD audio tracks were produced for Ghost Rider. Some people believe they can hear a difference between the two tracks, yet Dolby state that TrueHD is lossless and I see no reason to doubt this. Would I be right in thinking that each sound track may be independently derived from the original master audio by different engineers who may tweak the sound track to their own preferences?

On Ghost Rider and Stomp the Yard, the DDTHD track is compressed from a 20bit source while the LPCM is 16bit. We are taking advantage of the lossless encoding to allow greater bit depth sampling, so it should be possible to hear a difference between the two provided that your audio equipment is adequate.

Thank you sir!!! Hopefully this means Fox will be back in the Blu action VERY soon. That would be the best news in a long while as far as I'm concerned.

Love the above comment. You clearly understand part of the allure of packaged media. I love the cover art and package designs, and seeing all the boxes lined up on my shelf. I love the anticipation of getting a DVD or BD in the mail. I love placing a big order at a place like Amazon.

I cannot remember if it was Doherty or the A-man talking @ AVMS about how downloads are better cause you don't have to wait for the discs to show up in the mail. You can have 50 lossless tracks if you want. Blah, blah. To me, it takes a lot of the fun, anticipation and pride of ownership out of movies in your home. That's 50+% why I'll never support downloads.

I guess it's all about instant gratification these days. I don't get it.
