The NYY manager job is pretty thankless at times. If you win the WS, you did what you were supposed to do. If you do anything other than that, you're the biggest failure in the world. The Cubs will offer just as much money as the Yankees, and it's probably a far less stressful job. If Girardi goes to the Cubs and they lose, it's just another typical season for the Cubs. If he leads them to a WS, he'll have a statue of him in front of Wrigley (well, maybe he wouldn't be celebrated to that extreme).

3rd -- That's what I would do. It's possible Lee could have a bad start, and it's possible Burnett could have a good start. I wouldn't count on either, so you might as well take a chance that both unlikely events occur together, instead of spreading it over two games. I can take a few bad starts from a guy, but Burnett is more than a few bad starts. He was 10-15 this year, which isn't a record anyone on any MLB roster should have (except maybe the 5th guy in the Pirates rotation). Around loss 11 or 12, it's time to bench the guy, and/or throw him in the bullpen. And no matter what, they should never, ever, ever start a post-season game.

Any idea what the reasoning for even pitching Burnett is? I know it might be pushing it a bit but if I were the Yankees manager I'd probably just go with Sabathia/Pettitte/Hughes. Or do those guys have a habit of pitching poorly on 3 days rest? I've just seen nothing in Burnett that would make me trust starting him in a big series.

And in any case I'm happy to see my predictions of the Yankees and Phillies both winning in 5 games now have a good chance of being wrong. Glad to see the LCS are more competitive that I thought.

This year with the way the days off are, you can't go into a LCS using only 3 starters

This is why I've said that Joe Torre is one of the greatest Yankee managers of all time. Not only for what his Yankee teams did but that he can deal with the NY media and not bow down to the boss (George Steinbrenner). Should Retardi leave, I would be pleasantly surprised if Torre made a return.

As Wingman mentioned, I think it's related to the days off. They'd probably be fine using CC on short rest, but probably not Pettitte, and definitely not Hughes.

Another part of it is that it might destroy Burnett's confidence forever, if he didn't get to start in the playoffs (since the Yankees are probably stuck with him for the duration of his contract... another 3 years). Vasquez (another option, instead of Burnett) is only around for this season, so if he feels offended about not being used, he can go cry about it on another team next season.

Who knows though. Maybe with CC and Phil Hughes' uncharacteristic starts that Burnett will have one too, and throw a 1 hit shutout.
