Jake Arrieta is just ridiculous. Another great start yesterday at Pittsburgh with 7 innings pitched, 2 hits, and no earned runs. He's now 6-0 with a 0.84 ERA. In his last 18 regular season starts he's 17-0 with a 0.55 ERA. His last regular season road loss was May 7, meaning he's going to go more than a calendar year without losing a regular season game on the road.

One thing I don't understand about Arrieta is how little he capitalized on his Cy Young. Arrieta hasn't made a huge amount of money by baseball standards, less than $7 million total going into this season per Spotrac, yet to my knowledge Arrieta didn't sign any sort of autograph deal. After his no-hitter last year he did some signings for Fanatics and everything sold out fairly quickly but since then I'm not aware of him doing any signings. I collect signed memorabilia and would love to get a signed ball with a Cy Young inscription but they aren't available.

Lincecum showed off his repertoire to several teams recently and that got me thinking about player salaries. As in, too bad regular jobs don't work this way.
He's made 100 million dollars in his career. Broken down though you see how messed up it is. Cy Young years total salary: 1.055 million ![]() Quality above average years total salary: 23 million Below replacement level pitching total salary: 75 million ![]() |

Baseball is one of those sports where you get paid for what you've done, especially if you're good early. Teams get to skate through the first 3 years, and then arbitration for the next few get you at least into the same state as market value. And then you get your free agent shot where teams hope your next 4-7 years are as good as those earlier ones.
Fortunately, some teams are starting to offer extensions earlier. It's generally comparable to arbitration overall, but it can give a player money quicker and certainty for the next few years. |

Yes, but it's a difficult situation. Even the top picks taken every year aren't usually ready for the major leagues. So unlike other sports, you're not signed to a huge contract right away. But when do you start the big contract? Not right away, because a lot of guys get called up for a few days. If anything, I think the arbitration years should turn into player options at a set price where if the opt out, they're restricted free agents so the current team can match.

Cubs swept the Nationals in a 4 game series over the weekend but the bigger news was how they handled Bryce Harper. They walked him 13 total times, including 6 walks and a hit by pitch Sunday and 3 walks on Saturday. Harper didn't have an official at-bat in either Saturday or Sunday's games. He set records for most walks in a series, the first player in history to reach base 7 times without any official at-bat, and tied the record for most walks in a game. I'm guessing more teams are going to pitch around Harper unless Ryan Zimmerman starts hitting or the Nationals put a player behind Harper that can actually hit (like Daniel Murphy).
