As for Cashman...he deserves a ton of credit. I don't know about you, but when people kept complaining about how high the Yankee payroll was, I actually think they were hurting themselves by going out and getting locked into these long, guaranteed contracts. Finally they have freedom now to spend where they need to and keep the payroll down until they have to make decisions about their homegrown players when they hit free agency.

Torres is a wild card in all this. Boy, if they decide to trade him, one can only imagine what they can demand for him. Also, Cashman has found gold in the bargin bin quite a few times. Not to mention the higway robbery he's committed with getting Didi and Hicks in trades and not giving away high value assests (like trading Betemit for Swisher).

I think Girardi is very lucky that the Yanks are an overachieving team this year and were a complete suprise to even be a playoff team because if this was a series where the Yanks were the favorite, he'd probably get fired for this game. He should have listened to Sanchez and challenged the hit by pitch. He also should have pitched Chapman in the 8th to face Bruce. And while I didn't necessarily think it at the time so this is a second guess by me, pulling Sabathia when Girardi did could be looked at as a mistake. Sabathia was dealing and the Indians couldn't touch him. Plus, Girardi pulled him after an out was made too and the Yanks had a 5 run lead. The Yanks have a good bullpen but that can be a curse too...sometimes it's best to stay with your starter who is dealing rather than being in a hurry to go to the pen.

Didn't even realize there was already a Game 1 for NYY-CLE, let alone both Cleveland home games.

Would've been interesting going back to the Bronx all tied up, but such is life. I'll pull for the Bombers to at least stretch it out to Game 5.

Their Pythagorian W-L record is 100-62.
The adj. standings at Baseball Prospectus have them between 101 and 107 wins over the 162-game season.
Their PO odds had them with 60%+ chance of reaching the PO from May 14th on... (80%+ after July 25th)

Overachieving compared to preseason predictions. Nobody really expected the Yankees to be a relevant team this year. They were expected to be a .500'ish team when the season started. A longshot to make the playoffs.

I wonder what those numbers looked like when the Yanks were going into the tank in June and July, losing something like 8 of 9 on their west coast trip while Judge was one of the if not the worst player in baseball. My point is nobody expected the Yanks to start the season 21-9. They were going to be around a .500 team and many believed they would be under .500 given their lack of veteran players. Remember also that the Yanks had a ton of injuries this year as well, which is why they had to keep promoting minor leaguers to the team. So they definitely overachieved. People believed prior to this season that the Yanks wouldn't be a dominant team again until 2019. They weren't dominant this year but they have a chance to be next year if they build on the success of this season and add some players here and there.

Las Vegas had the Yankees win total at 83.5 They finished with 91. Based on their run differential, They should have had about 95 wins.

The reason why is because the Yanks had 23 blown saves, which was 3 shy of the team with the most in the American League. They also had a bunch of games where they blew out the opposition.
