Jayson Stark has an article on ESPN.com talking about some of the incentives players have had put into their contracts this offseason. Some of the funnier ones include:

Jayson Werth has it in his contract that he will be #28.

Chien Ming-Wang gets a $50,000 bonus if he wins the Silver Slugger award (best hitting pitcher). Ming-Wang is a career 0-14 hitter. Phillies reliever J.C. Romero also has a $50,000 Silver Slugger bonus. Romero has had one at-bat since 2003.

5 Pirates have World Series MVP clauses in their contracts. No Yankee has a World Series MVP clause.

Will Ohman, Jesse Crain, and Takashi Saito get bonuses if they are the starting pitcher in the All-Star game. All 3 are relief pitchers who have never started a game.

Adam Dunn gets a $25,000 bonus if he wins a Gold Glove. Dunn was signed primarily as a DH

Why do they agree to that crap? I guess they don't read it I'd rather take like 10k or 25k of that 50k and make it in something I could attain rather than say I get a billion dollar bonus if I get a triple crown.

Andruw Jones has hit .222, .148, .214 and .230 the last four seasons. What does anyone see in this guy that could be worth yet another chance? I know he's still a good defensive player but good defense doesn't come close to offsetting offensive production that terrible.

Red Sox and RHP Jonathan Papelbon avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $12 million contract.
The Red Sox knew this day was coming. They had an opportunity to non-tender Papelbon this winter and they even looked into acquiring Mariano Rivera from the free agent pool. The deal's been done since Friday, although the introductory press conference was today. It's interesting that Brian Cashman publicly stated that he did not think Soriano was worth that much but Hal Steinbrenner overruled him and had team president Randy Levine negotiate the contract. Look back about 5 pages and you'll see some comments.

The deal has been effectively a done deal for like a week. Get real and actually read the thread and you'll see plenty about Soriano. You sound like ESPN these days - a week late to the party.

The guy is a good reliever and has potential. I'm just not ready to call a guy with 2 years of experience as a closer Mariano's successor. MLB is littered with relievers who had one or two good years before imploding. It's kind of silly to suggest that adding a middle-reliever is somehow earth shattering.

Can you say anything constructive in this thread without calling people "Yankee haters"? It's just old, tired and played at this point.
