Just seen it. Load of cliched stylized old rubbish. Blatty should have copyrighted the Exorcist and all likenesses, every movie focussing on demonic posession since then has tried to follow the same formula, adding a few of its own daft touches into the mix, but coming up way way short.
An exorcism scene with a blaring number from The Doors? What the f*** was that about? ![]() |

I watched this mainly as a fan of Christopher Young and I urge anyone to check out the itunes release as it contains far more (and better) music than is heard in the movie.
The movie itself... Having it start in Iraq just like that other obscure movie about exorcism, I don't know. What is it about Iraq that people who go there get possessed? Is that a tourist brochure thing? The movie has a cop teaming up with a priest and it would appear by the writing that these two parts got mixed up; the priest is the exuberant alcoholic/junkie while the cop is the moral compass. I also find it hard in this day and age to still take priests serious as well as the whole "exorcist" angle, this could have been updated to a more believable fashion where exorcism is considered a myth. Instead, this movie would have you believe the ghostbusters are out there tracking down the possessed every other day. Then we have the possessed and their ring leader, the former acted out by what I presume are street performance artists and the latter just didn't do much to scare me. The sequence at the zoo is silly and feels too much like a set piece. There is also a subplot with the cop's wife and kid being intimidated which totally sidetracks the movie and I suspect was put in to give it that "Insidious" level of shock scares that was probably missing beforehand. Olivia Munn was good in the part of the wife, though totally underused. To say I wasn't impressed with Deliver Us from Evil is putting it mildly, I found the whole thing contrived, with echos of better movies and I did not get into the movie at all. There have been few exorcism movies that could deliver since that obscure one with the pea soup, this is not one of them. P.S. The whole Doors thing was silly, at least pick a more satanic band or a Tiny Tim track. Last edited by Bumblefeet; 11-26-2014 at 07:11 PM. |

I quite liked this, it was much better than the other recent exorcism flicks, mainly because it blends the tropes of the possession film to a police procedural. It had a larger scope than the usual film of its type: an exorcist and a possessed person in a house. I thought the film was creepy and atmospheric and I liked the zoo scene, which felt like a nod to The Omen. The point where the film falls apart is in the exorcism climax which I've seen a gazillion times before and where everything goes as expected. Until that point, I don't understand the hate this is getting here.

I'm interested in seeing the movie but waiting for a decent price. I read the book that it was based on right around the time the movie came out and it was complete garbage. The guy is a religious nutjob (and I'm not saying that as an insult to people who are religious, this guy seriously has some problems) The priest who writes the foreword to the book pretty much says that most mental problems are misdiagnosed and the person is possessed by the Devil.
Also here's some signs that you have a demon in your house according to the book: 1) You played with a Ouija board at some point in your life 2) You get home from work and your wife doesn't have dinner on the table 3) Your wife has stopped doing the dishes and laundry Thankfully this appears to be one time where I'm grateful that a movie is "loosely" based on a book. |

You should still check it out, especially if you're not paying for it. I hated the book but I read the whole thing just to see how ridiculous it could be. Just make sure you have your Rosary, bottle of Holy Water, and piece of the true cross while you're reading for full effect. (he mentions them at least four or five times every chapter)
