Welcome back and thanks for checking in Penton, but get your house in order (literally). Hollywood talk can wait a few more days! Nothing earth-shaking here... ok, i'm done with the bad puns, but the message holds true.

Why does the UK have to wait months (or years) more for titles than the USA, even for catalogue titles and titles that haven't had a major/worldwide theatrical release (I'm mostly talking about Sony, 20th Century Fox and Universal titles)?

WickyWoo (in response to this https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=3722 different but related question) said that "the US divisions have no control over what appears in the UK. You need to contact your local studio", but I see no way of contacting people like 20th Century Fox UK etc.

Surely the UK divisions of Universal/Sony/Fox could talk to their US counterparts and create a UK DVD & Blu-ray release on the same date as the US ones for titles that are catalogue ones or ones that aren't currently (and aren't still scheduled to be) released theatrically in the UK?

Hey Penton,

ANy idea when we can expect for Sony to reveal its Q4 bluray line up. I hope you politely let them know that Bad Boys 2 is a must!

A question not entirely about bluray, but I was wondering if you could comment about a sequel to Real Genius as reported here

I would hope that means that Real Genius is on its way to bluray, too.

Thanks!

Unfortunately Europe is the poor cousin to both the US and Asia (mainly Japan) when it comes to movie release and electronics in general. We are always to last to see new stuff.

Hello Penton,

I don't have any specific questions to ask. Rather I would like to encourage you, in case you have any clout, to inform the appropriate party at Miramax that a release of Krzysztof Kieslowski's 's Three Colors Trilogy will be appreciated a great deal by a number of people who look beyond the latest Hollywood blockbusters for their entertainment needs.

For the record Swedish distributor Noble Entertainment are set to release Krzysztof Kieslowski's beloved Three Colors Trilogy as a 3BD set this October.

As always thank you for your contribution

Dr.A

I just received a funny PM containing a quote from a link to an internet thread that has a rat’s ass amount of purchasing power influencing overall Blu-ray sales.

My response……………………….
This is a heads-up to all amateur digital video janitors out there in internet land.

Well, let me try that again as we have few technical secrets here at the top (or very close to) the Google Blu-ray movie forum world everyday of the week…….
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...66#post1061366

ATTENTION ALL AMATEUR DIGITAL VIDEO JANITORS !
^ How’s that look bolded and capitalized ?

Since we all know that members of that myopic hypersensitivity crusade have said such things as---- “EE does not exist in films”, “EE sucks”, “The only good EE is a dead EE” with contiguous statements saying that they want their Blu-rays to be as authentic as possible to the theatrical presentation, of which they always have vivid recollections dating back even more than a decade.

Well, here’s a quick heads-up for those janitors with their greater than 100” screens, sitting one magic-mop’s length away in their computer chairs with their telescopes.

Now Hear This!
The motion picture entitled Daybreakers……………………
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433362/

had multiple whole scenes that were intentionally sharpened (errrrr, to use the current hobbyist vernacular “edge enhanced”) for the upcoming theatrical presentation so, get dem magnifying glasses ready for when this title eventually hits Blu-ray publication and -
Happy Halo Hunting………or, should I say, Happy Online Custodial Work as I’m sure that the most diligent out there will find at least several frames showing halos if so motivated to screenshot post.

Let’s have some due diligence here !
I don’t want to see any slackers actually watching the movie itself !
Meanwhile can we at least place this title on some sort of ‘EE waiting’ list ?

Merrick,
I haven’t forgotten you. I’m checking to see what people think is o.k. to be revealed on that topic.
It is a competitive environment.

Since I’ve been back from the ‘civilized’ continent, I haven’t seen Wicky or Deci around here ?
Were you naughty boys at the Wrath of Con par-tae?
http://www.cinematical.com/photos/sd...rty-08/949963/

And where’s Ben …………been?
Or is he lost roaming the under deck of some carrier that was in port at Seaport Village?

Deci,
A facility is doing DI work on a feature film and perhaps you can offer any thoughts on anamorphic extraction methods for the film deliverables, which will be shown in cinemas from a resultant anamorphic print.
The film was captured 444SR 1920 x 1080 24p, framed for 2.35.
So this raises some questions as there are different methods to create the anamorphic
image.
1. Digitally stretch the 2.35 extract from the original 1920 file in Post ?
2. Optically stretch the extracted 2.35:1 image on an Arri Laser by adjusting the pitch of the laser ?

^
Perhaps the above will encourage an appearance unless you’re playing house in San Diego.

Saint Diego was nice but no partying for wrath of Khan

1- Is the 1920 pixel width shot to correspond with the visible 0.825" Projector Aperture Dimension or with the hidden from view 0.868" Camera Aperture dimension

2- Framed for 2.35 so I assume it was shot with spherical lenses and not with a 1.33x anamorphic.

3- If you're going to record the 803 x 1920 (or 764 x 1825) (see 1) on the 0.690" x 0.825" anamorphic print area and you use a 2K/4K recorder with a fixed pitch of 83.33/166.66 p/mm that comes up to 1460 x 1746/2920 x 3492 so you have to rescale in all directions. (And using 2K you lose horizontal)

Resizing if not done with the best methods can lose sharpness.

3b- If you're able to vary the film recording pitch infinitely so it writes 1920 (or 1825) for the 0.825" width, you skip the resizing step.

3c- You would always resize the vertical 2x anyway if you don't vary the writing x/y pitch by 2:1 too with the laser having to write 803 pixels (or 764) into 0.690", (45.82 (or 43.59) p/mm pitch) since the anamorphic has the 2:1 height.

3d- I still would think resizing the image, specially if the original image is very sharp, to 1606 x 1920, or to 3212 x 3840 (or 1528 x 1825 or 3056 x 3650) with the best upscaler and aperture correction to maintain the MTF on screen could get a sharp image while preventing any jaggies from showing up for the people sitting next to or in front of me . Sitting behind me it may not make that much of a difference.

Resizing (upscaling) is good for watching images that when seen at sufficient magnification might betray their digital resolution origins (pixelation, jaggies) because the eyes can resolve more

3d of course is a combination of both methods

Send hardware to my place for ahem extensive testing

I did particularly enjoy my visit to the Midway.

It was almost as entertaining as this kind of thing:
