ahaha, how appropriate that eric.exe has "screenshot engineer" under his name. Yet he has absolutely no understanding of film grain.
Piss on screen shot zealots all you want, but I think that shot at Josh is unwarranted and should be reconsidered.

Josh was a red warrior, besides Penton didn't say anything bad about him really.

(want proof btw? read back issues of Home Theater magazine where he laments the death of HD DVD in one column, then takes the BDA to task in another)

He's mellowed of course, but we all know he wish Toshiba had won...

Are you guys for fu(king real?!!??!? You have somebody who spoke directly to the DP about this release… someone who confirmed that the DP DID IN FACT SUPERVISE THE NEW TRANSFER. Oh yeah, and someone who just happened to be around when the godd@mn film was being made… You know, an actual filmmaker himself???

But no, I’d rather some yahoo from Salt Lake City or South America, who’s never even HELD an HDCAM tape, much less been involved with what goes into getting the film there… that’s the guy I really want to hear thoughts on the transfer and encoding process from.

I’m going to let some of you in on a little secret… You guys, who think you’re really expert and smart about all this HD stuff… You’re not. A lot of you are making guesses and assumptions based on other people’s guesses and assumptions and somewhere along the way you’ve convinced each other that it’s ALL fact because no one can remember where the bullsh!t started. Information and knowledge has become diseased and ranks less important around here than personal opinion and posting hierarchy.

Sorry, but it sickens me to see this distortion of information continue on (something AVS is sadly all too willing to allow, apparently). I’m tired of seeing people (and this includes the guys policing these threads) just sit on their hands and pretend that AVS isn’t being run by a handful of lunatic posters who have made AVS a digital Lord of the Flies.

So ban me if want (I couldn't really care less at this point) and delete this post (I fully expect it to be gone before morning… it’s seems to be AVS policy to suppress/delete the truth and punish those who have repeatedly tried to make the forum a better place), but…

Enough is enough!!! This forum has turned into a godd@mn sewer with the absolute bottom feeders allowed to eat away at AVS’s integrity. Congrats AVS, you continue to supply evidence as to why you’ve become one of the biggest online jokes in the AV community. How bad do you have to have let things get when Blu-ray.com is now the level-headed, friendly place for discussion?
Prove me wrong… I DARE YOU!”

Couldn't agree more about the PQ threads. There are other areas of AVS that don't have these trolls patrolling the isles (thankfully), but I spend less and less time there each week.

(wasn't Penton, was "monkey" with his "even Josh" comment)

Regarding your "proof", so what? That doesn't make him an idiot, even for those at this site... It may be a shocking thing, but there really were some things, objectively, that HD-DVD did better, certainly during the early stages. It was worth "lamenting" that they blew an early lead and ended up being an almost-ran when no other manufacturer joined on board. We saw, in the aftermath, a step backwards in HD capabilites (for almost all players save, natch, PS3) that only now are being caught up with.

There was a crapload they did wrong, and I'm certainly not unhappy that the format war ended in BDs favour. However, to equate his so-called "bias" regarding a format war, making it seem utterly ridiculous to have thought differently than you clearly have, is unfair. Equating him to those that blindly jump on screenshot criticism bandwagons like so many lemmings is, well, tragically ironic given the direction much of the format divide discourse went (bandwith discussions, anyone?)

I don't know Josh, I'm just saying that just because you disagree with him regarding some of his conclusions, he at least presented them in a respectful way, seems willing to listen to reason, and has done quite a good job, I think, in presenting many of the complex issues that we take for granted in a concise, coherent fashion with his many posts and articles (his FAQ on HighDef Digest I think has been great for the uninitiated).

Piss on zealots all you'd like, those that blindly follow whatever leader, spouting the same shite over and over (be it "red ant" OR "mushy DNR") like this whole thing is some creepy team sport... If you can't distinguish between someone like Josh and the rest of the goons posting with a REAL chip on their shoulder, then something's indeed fishy in Denmark...

The thread is still there, just Cliff's post was deleted. Interestingly, the blu-ray.com CHASING AMY review comes to the same conclusions as the naysayers in that thread. Still doesn't change the fact that Dave told me what he did, and the griping about "color" over there which has nothing to do with any suspected DNR.

No, I haven’t heard anything in that regard but, honestly Kris, I have only been paying attention to some our Blu-ray product and that of Paramount’s < and that, only while we were having outsourcing discussions with them to do their Blu-ray stuff which ultimately ended when they decided last month to renew their Blu-ray/DVD replication, mastering, etc. with Thomson (Technicolor) with an apparently multi-year contract.

I don’t follow Josh Z. unless someone alerts me to his specific postings and everything that I’ve seen him write recently has been o.k.

In fact, I think he frowns on screenshot *science* as much as RAH, myself and others do.

Well, I know that this site never got any ‘perks’ from the BDA or Sony during the format war. Heck, this forum didn’t even start showing advertisements until very, very recently while other forums on the internet have been doing that sort of billboard stuff for years now.

I, for one, sure would have loved to have had this in effect during the format war

For me, this one paragraph in that deleted post by Cliff sums it all up in a nutshell over there, as I couldn’t have said it better myself……..

Well, let me know if the *scientists* start hacking on the color, contrast, “grain” or any other visual characteristic they can think of regarding Julie & Julia because if they do, I’m ready and loaded for bear with that title.

Heads-Up RAH,
Tonight, Gordon Willis (Lenser Extraordinaire ) as well as producer-executive John Calley, actress Lauren Bacall, producer-director Roger Corman will be honored at the Academy’s inaugural Governors Awards event.

If by chance you didn’t know, then might I suggest sending Gordon a Congratulatory e-mail.

The "science" behind the demolition was so crude. It was sheer LUCK that people were not killed. That chunk that hit the Caddy was ginormous.

I was lucky enough to be snorkling far off shore at Shaws Cove in Laguna abot 30 years ago when a herd of whales cruised slowly (and closely) by. I dont know which type they were, but it was an awe inspiring interaction with one of natures most impressive beasts. It was simply by chance, and I'll never forget it.

An audio clip (testimonial) for Gordon by fellow cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (who himself, by the way, will be honored with an ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in Feb.)

I'm not sure how disappointment at the end of market competition (which held some undeniable benefits for consumers) and the addressing of some concerns to the BDA (my country, right or wrong?) make one a "red warrior".

If that's "proof", what would constitute "evidence"- that he owns a red sweater?

I'd love to have that in effect across all media. Pundits should be disclosing who they're on the payroll of, and it should come right under their name whenever they're on screen, and they shouldn't be able to hide behind "institute" or whatever either. Too much "news" is bought and sold these days, and too much of the public doesn't give enough thought into what people are saying either because they're disconnected or simply too busy, and doing that at least gives them a shot at knowing where it's coming from.

Those were just 2 quickie examples. There's also a long posting history at AVS if you really want to get into it. When you want to get down to it Josh picked a side and it wasn't Blu-ray.
