I guess I should have read ahead before posting my oh-so-clever-and-original "that wouldn't be a nail in the coffin" comment.

While I thought Penton-Man was preparing us for a smallish nail in the coffin, the "Valentine's Day Massacre" comment is certainly interesting in this light.

And Toshiba is not a studio...

Hmmm...

In the past when Penton goes quiet it's always been a good sign for what's going on behind the scenes.

Maybe Penton doesn't need to comment right now, maybe he's busy, who knows. Just be patient and it will come, the end of the war.

I would love to get insiders' take on this as well, but I really don't know why people are bothering to ask for insider comments.

If it is not true, any comment from our insiders whether speculative or substantial could cause complications in whatever is actually going on.

If it is true, there is no way any Blu-Ray insider is going to risk mucking anything up or damaging whatever might already be happening in the way of making peace within the industry by saying anything before Toshiba has their say on the issue.

So, ask away, but I think anyone seriously expecting an answer other than a no comment or not my place to say is wishful thinking.

I really hope that this rumor is dead on. As I read it, I flashed back to that great day when CC gave up the DIVX battle with a short announcement posted on the DIVX page. It would be so much better for this war to end with a solid and final statement from Toshiba rather than further dragging out of the hostility and negativity until the war is over by default. I would actually rather have this ending than one where the holdout studios force Toshiba to give up because of lack of software support. This ending would head off all of the "We shall return" stuff I would expect from diehards if the war was ended without a definite statement from Tosh.

Chris

Edit: PS, I agree with those who are pointing out that silence has often preceded good news for us.

For the metaphor, I'd chose this vid:

Substitute one former fowl for a particular high-def format...

What the hell are we all going to do when this is all over... it will be like a huge hollow in our lives. I think we will come to look on the format war in future times like old comrades in arms... that times have never been as good since.

... or then again we may just watch our movies
