I would have posted this message in Paid's thread but it's closed...There were a lot of justified postings about the terrific job Sony did restoring "A Passage to India" but I want to also say "Thanks" to Paid and team for the awesome job Sony did with "The Water Horse." This movie is reference in every way and it is also a terrific story. This is a great family picture that I thought was a Disney film (very Disney like). I am very happy to own this movie and I recommend that anyone else who passed on this title to rethink their decision.

Default Marketing Info

Hey Penton Man!

Not sure if this is the correct forum to be asking this, but I'll ask anyway. Just wondering how one is to source marketing information regarding the potential market, primary segments and their characteristics of the Blu-ray consumers? I hope you or fellow bloggers can assist me. Thanks. Smilie :-0)

Ditto...Water Horse: excellent movie, excellent transfer, on my 3rd viewing. This was not well promoted theatrically or this would have definately made more money at the boxoffice. This is one of those films that leaves you with that rare great feeling you had after E.T. or The Neverending Story! At least it did for me.

PM, are we going to see more BD-Live and BonusView offerings from studios? And when do the official packaging insignia's go live? I am curious how the BDA intends to market these features. Thanks.

Yeah, I don't understand that. It's a really good movie and the PQ/SQ are great but yet, most people haven't even heard of the movie. Until just recently, there wasn't even a review of it. A little hype here and there and maybe it would have done much at the box-office and on blu-ray/DVD. I'm hoping word-of-mouth will help some but it's not looking good. It's already dropped out of the top 10 on blu-ray.

Anyway, just wanted to chime in as well. Great job on The Water Horse (and of course, A Passage to India).

What's sad is that I thought I hadn't heard of this movie. As soon I read a review about it, I realized I had seen the trailer before and said to myself, "Oh, it's that one about the baby Loch Ness Monster!"

Water Horse seems to be in the same marketing category as Stardust. I hadn't even heard of the latter until last October when the girl I was dating at the time took me to see it.

When DVD was launched there was not a rental window and were priced for sale on the release date. It was the same as the VHS just a different pricing model. It was the same for LD but DVDs were priced lower.

I was working at a Suncoast around the time DVD was launched.
I remember this well, it was the reason I bought my first DVD player. I loved the movie Deep Blue Sea and wanted to buy it when it came out, but it was only available to rent on VHS. So I bought my first DVD player (about $200) and never looked back.

Hi Penton! I asked this on Bill's thread but thought I might try you, also.

Coming to America today was in stock, then out of stock, then delayed 7-12 days on Amazon. Interestingly, I bought it when the status was "In stock", and my order already says "preparing these items for shipment". This tells me that Amazon had a batch, then asked for another shipment after the first batch ran out. If they're ordering straight from Paramount, maybe the studio is clearing out its warehouse for a shipload of newly pressed stock. Can you comment or would somebody have to kill you?

All I can share with you are some interesting asides.
One being that New Line essentially bet the farm (with financial investment) on the box office success of the picture…….and lost. Some say that was the beginning of the studio to be eventually absorbed into WB.

The other interesting aside is that Anne Coates cut the film (or I guess more accurately, was one of the Lead Editors for the project).
Who is Anne Coates ?

She is an amazing woman that continues to cut film into her eighties! (born in the 1920’s).
She cut Lawrence of Arabia. To hear her tell stories of that experience is truly riveting. One of my favorite is that when she was commissioned to cut a test scene of Albert Finney and screened it for David Lean, he remarked “that is the first piece of film I have seen that was cut exactly the way I would have cut it.”
To truly understand how great a compliment this is, I strongly suggest everyone watch the Featurettes on A Passage to India………specifically, the one entitled -
"Only Connect: A Vision of India"

As David Lean was considered by many to be Britain’s greatest editor.
Hell, the Featurettes are themselves worth the price of the Blu-ray disc as far as I’m concerned. All of the segments are worth a look-see after you’ve watched the movie.

Seriously, it'll probably never happened, I was shocked even at the possibility
I wouldn’t absolutely rule it out as being a dead issue in the future. I would say it is *dormant* at this time in the process.
I can guarantee you one thing, if/when a Blu-ray title streets earlier than its companion DVD, it will happen with a much higher profile title than Be Kind Rewind.

As a longtime fan of both David Lean and E.M. Forster, I couldn't be happier with the disc of The Passage to India. Only connect, indeed!

Well, he took two weeks off for vacation and then came back to work where he got clobbered for awhile playing catch-up.
He then attended NAB and likewise returned to work with his plate overflowing with things to do related to his absence.
Most recently, he’s spent all of his free time training for an intensive physical endurance event…..which he finished.
I’ll see if I can find out his intentions in regards to posting again.
