That's definitely what it sounds like. But like the video game, HAZE, due out in a couple weeks, the delays are for the better. I would happily wait a little longer for a completely remastered version. Or in the case of HAZE, ironing out the kinks.

Damn, I don't visit this thread for a day and major stuff goes down.
LOA restored in 4K??? YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Is Robert Harris involved? Can they use the ON? It's not printable, but probably still scannable, frame by frame. Finally the 'banding' in some desert shots can be fixed. |

Doesn't 70mm go into the 8K range in terms of resolvable detail? I know it doesn't affect the BD release, but don't you think they should go all out on this particular transfer?

![]() While I love movies I haven't spent a ton of time reading up on the restoration processes/scanning process so thanks for the education. ![]() |

I think the Northlight does 5 perf 65mm at 6K across the width so about near 3000 x 6000 pixels, depends on the pitch they use which should be near 120 p/mm

LOA has about 6K max according to a study. So they will likely scan > 4K and finish in 4K. 4K for final master is plenty. 65mm film's (as in LOA) MTF is such that beyond 4K MTF is way down so it makes no difference if you project at 4K or 6K, if you could. Sharpness/detail is the same to the eye.

I have to ask, why on earth would Sony restore Lawrence Of Arabia when it already was restored to near perfection by Robert Harris in the eighties?
A new transfer of the restoration negative (I assume that the original negative is not usable anymore as the Eastmancolor stock was already near its end of life when Robert Harris worked with it) I can understand but a complete new restoration sounds dubious to me. |

To answer your question the best I’m at liberty to do……scanning of the LoA negative (large format) is under testing right now. |

The BDA need to get their priorities in order!
Whats the point of restoring and releasing classic movies, Blockbusters, whatever, if there aren't any full spec, affordable, players out there! No wonder sales of these titles are poor, we can't bloody play them unless you have a PS3!!!! Sorry, but we've gone beyond the point of buying any old crappy hardware, we want full spec, affordable players...........you know, this decade! I'm amazed how uterly shambolic the state of Blu-ray hardware still is, thank god for the PS3! |

I'm in the Adriatic.
And while I know we've had civilization for roughly two thousand years longer than the British (and that the Americans are a blip on the radar), I've been buying Region A titles like a happy hippogriff for a year now. What's the problem with Region B exactly? The Panny DM-BD50 got announced there earlier than for the US, and fully-featured Profile 2.0 players will be abundant within the next six months. Sure it pays to stick with the blippy Americans, but it's not like the BDA has been treating Europe with disdain. And what's wrong with the PS3? It's a dang good machine, even if it doesn't have analogue audio outputs. May it forever be the extent of its shortcomings. Great news on LOA, btw! Any and all David Lean is an immediate preorder in my household/lair. Last edited by Seretur; 05-10-2008 at 12:07 AM. |

I havn't been able to read the threads for some time and finally caught up on this one and what great news of LOA. My hats off to Sony for doing this, very exciting. Now my prayers go out that one day Sony will be fixing the huge problems with "Oliver" and "Funny Girl" and I will be a very happy man. Thanks Penton for the LOA info.

Penton..
I went to the 70mm showing of Lawrence of Arabia. Let me say offhand, id only seen the first hour or so of Lawrence in 720p and never finished watching it, i liked what i saw however. So i went to see the movie in 70mm today and i can just say, i was BLOWN away. The acting, the score, the amazing backdrops and cinematography, just absolutely awesome. One of the best movies ive ever seen. The PQ was absolutely amazing, some of the scenes look like they were shot in HD Cam the day before, they were so clean (especially when lawrence is on the beach with the camel). Anyhow, thanks for giving us a heads up about the showing, very very happy i went and loved it so much. Cannot wait for the new transfer BD. Tell the guys at sony they have 4 copies sold here (1 for me, 3 for buddys). |
