I warned Michel about this 2 weeks ago. I just foresee in the future that whenever some home theater enthusiasts see a “soft” Blu-ray movie,
sha-zaaaaaaaaam ! ………The word will go out that it’s been DNR’ed to death!, and that is not necessarily the case.

Not to mention the fact that you’ve now got some people speaking authoritatively about “DNR” when they don’t have even a rudimentary knowledge of how/where/why in the production chain it could be applied and perceivably misused.

This forum, in conjunction with Bill Hunt is leading the way in approaching people of importance at different studios (and have already done so, in one instance) to give this issue the attention it deserves. I just personally dislike all the *extrapolation* that has arisen out of the primary issue.

It disturbs me that some home theater enthusiasts that have never even seen Patton (be it at the theater, on DVD, etc.) – could be reluctant to even rent it now because they’ve been turned off to the title by the online pontification concerning DNR. So, they end up missing out on a great film at home just because of reading the online negative hype……much of which is by people that have never seen the prior home media edition (DVD).
I"ll admit im one of those people that use the term DNR with out really knowing why or how its being used, but there doing something to the movie right? i mean have you seen twister and face-off? as soon as i put those movies in i noticed the softness. now i dont know if its like that cause they wanted it to look like that or for some other reson, but its there. I understand before what you were saying about how on some movies it could be the directors intent, and i guess thats fine.but if its being used for the other reson( i dont know im just guessing) i guess i can see how it makes sense for them, seeing how those people are the one's thats going to make blu go mainstream. its funny cause my sister has wached a couple blu's with me and not once has she complained about the big g word, all i hear from her is how the picture looks like the theater, and it looks good. I dont know, are those other poeple looking for something to complain about so they wont have to upgrade?
I appreciate you being here, and i hope you understand what i was trying to say.

That is only natural. Remember the lead alert on Chinese-made toys? You go from total obliviousness to panic (stores recalling anything having a remote possibility of lead content) and back to normal, with increased awareness of the issue (toy companies watching more closely their overseas partners).

And some people that do have that knowledge (e.g., Robert A. Harris).

For some enthusiasts, it is not merely watching a great film at home. To quote Bill Hunt, "The Blu-ray presentation should replicate, as closely as possible, the best original theatrical experience of the film. THAT'S the goal."

Is this nitpicking? Probably. But think about this: the nitpicking obsessive early-adopter nerds are the best word-of-mouth publicity Blu-ray can have. Win them over and they'll sell the format to everyone around.

If we were easy-to-please conformists, we'd be watching DVD.

Disclaimer: I watched Patton once, on TV, in letterbox aspect ratio, ages ago.

Are you sure? If my memory serves me right The Thin Red Line was Fox's first anamorphic DVD, but I've been wrong plenty of times before.

Nice. I remember anamorphic support being real hit or miss after these titles with Fox. Everyone was so excited when the Alien films were actually anamorphic. Those were the days.......

People tend to use Mr. Harris as a quotable reference when it suits their needs……….and dismiss or ignore him when it doesn’t – despite his knowledge.

Having seen and worked with Mr. Crisp on the current master, I can tell you that when release it will be stunning. As far as opening your SB. Go for it.
^ from #7 here………..
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...2&postcount=23

The “current master” that RAH is referring to, is the same that was shown on HDNet a few months ago and if anything, Mr. Harris is a helluva a lot more familiar with the 70mm presentation of LoA than he is with Patton and ultimately what the “full potential” of the LoA Blu-ray edition is capable of.

Has anyone that provided their input in and around here…………….
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1547

used Mr. Harris as a reference for the “current master” of Lawrence of Arabia ?

I don’t have much of a problem with “nitpicking” if people have the time to do it.
It’s the *extrapolation* part that I don’t care for.

Yes, there are some documented cases of excessive DNR that have resulted in displeasing artifacts to critical viewers. Those examples are/will be brought to the attention of people who are empowered to make changes for the good.

In some cases of feature films, the cosmetic aspect has been done to make an actor appear his/ her best early on (during the primary photography) rather than at the end of post…………………. because of political reasons.

Some say more and more HD news outlets are using ProMist diffusion filters on the camera lens. People in the biz are now even seeing their use with the cameraman shooting reporters in the field!, not just anchors.

I'm thinking Wrestlemania was shot with these or something similar. The footage didn't look DVNR'd, but there was something artificially smooth about the wrestlers that didn't look processed. That would certainly explain it.

I like my reporters to look a little more mature and experienced.

Sorry, some acquaintences of mine made a movie I often refer people to which is a takeoff on the title, illuminating some of the more....unique commandments of the old testament (I like to call it "God Hates Tilex")

Rob doesn’t watch the broadcast to see the Lakers play.
He tunes in to lip-read what Jeff Katzenberg is saying to Steven S. in those $50,000 courtside seats.

And to Mr. Tomlin -
Well………”I like my water fresh” and served to me by Claudia Cardinale.

Not to worry Rob, we should be able to hook up later as the Academy has more goodies planned in the future that you’ll probably be interested in.
Just don't crash "the babe magnet" in the meantime.
