No worries about Comic Con... I'll be standing right next to Wicky to make sure he doesn't get out of line...
Very nice piece.
A must read for everyone.

Penton,

I've been wrangling pixels for over 14 years.

Trick is to wash your hands often before they can get under the skin.

Once they do, you're in for quite a ride.

Whatever we get out here (weather-wise) seems to often find its way on over to the East coast.
Prepare yourself.

You know you get me all excited with that western talk !
Hasn't anyone here seen Broken Trail yet on Blu-ray ?

Tomlin, you'll love it.
Best western I've seen since the western you and I both believe is the best ever.
Bob, I see you’re just a pixel cowboy dressed as a dude (photochemical restorer).
I’ll be sure to recommend to Grover that he call you in for any digital restoration work on any redo of LoA prior to the coloring phase.

What did you think?

And who's your tip now to win the tournament?

Watched Broken Trail last night. Loved it. I'll see anything with Robert Duvall in it. Duvall + Western = purchase.

I should have it tomorrow. I'm sure it will be great! If its anything like Open Range w/Duvall, I'll love it.

Penton,

Any hints on what to expect this week?

According to the always reliable TK Arnold, it should be a very BLU EMA.

There are some very happy stuff in the offing, so sayeth the grapevine. It's very hairy to reveal anything that may come out of it, but I wouldn't be eating orange slices in the garden and reading the news at the same time.

Now get out your Penton decoder rings.......................

Penton needs to say something first

Unless Ive missed it, Pentons thread as of late has been exclusively about two things:
DNR (and why we hate it) and European Soccer

Did I miss any hints?

And speaking of that, might I highly recommend to those that have already purchased or plan to rent The Sand Pebbles, that they take the time to view the *added value* in the supplements entitled “Remembering Steve McQueen” because as far as I’m concerned he *made* the movie as good as it is and was a man of many talents (ISDT competitor, Sebring racer), which the contributors delve into a little.
I very much agree, Penton. The rest of the movie looks its age (which is not a bad thing) but his part could be today.

Who won? I suppose the guy at SONY that came up with the Pan
and Scan button on my XBR remote in my Den. Or the people at Runco that
sold me on their CineWide technology for my Home Theater. Mega
bucks in the case of the latter. http://www.runco.com/cinewide.html
Worth every penny.

But what's the default presentation for any DVD? Widescreen. What's the default for Blu? Widescreen. What did it take? Education of the public.

The number of people who prefer P&S, AND are willing to/have the money to invest in a common height system is astoundingly small, and due to the cost of the optics/projector/processor is likely to always remain so.

Imagine if the studios had given into the cries for full frame 4:3 back then. I suspect a lot of people would now be p!ssed that the studios didn't think ahead.

The mob NEVER takes responsibility for their own lack of vision.

The same goes for now. Rather than demand something be permanently locked into the encoding, people should demand as pure a source as possible, and then demand the CE add the settings to adjust it to their liking. Because, that liking could change in the future.

Imagine if wall sized OLED displays are $3000 in 15 years. Won't everyone wish the detail for upconversion was left in the encoding rather than being scrubbed for transitory sensibilities?
