I finally found a way to scan the calibration reports for my Kuro.

Actually the before calibration measurements were not too bad according to Jeff. I purchased the excellent ControlCal and I used D-Nice's settings prior to having the display professionally calibrated. Turbe and D-Nice provide a terrific service to home theater enthusiasts. However, if you want to get pro monitor results, a professional calibration is required. I assume the primary reason for this is every display device is a little different requiring specific tweaks. IMO, Jeff Meier from AccuCal is one of the very best ISF/THX certified engineers in the business.

As I mentioned before, Jeff also calibrated my audio system. Unfortunately there are no reports. Rather, he provided a page with specific numbers to reprogram my Pre if needed. The audio calibration also made a huge improvement in my system. Prior to Jeff’s handy work, I used Audyessy to calibrate my audio components. Unfortunately, this left my speakers sounding very bright. The result of Jeff’s audio calibration left my speakers sounding fuller. In other words, it seemed as if the sound was floating slightly above the speakers before the calibration and now the sound is much more balanced. I can finally hear what my speakers are supposed to sound like. I am a big fan of Audyssey and I’ll continue to practice to determine what I am doing wrong.

P.S. Sorry for the small attachements. These are the close to largest file size that I am allowed to upload.

Penton,

I have the lovely "Oasis: Lord Don't Slow Me Down" Blu-Ray Disc which is encoded w the infamous 50hz video that won't play on US PS3's. I know it's been asked before, but could we ever see this 50hz supported in a US PS3 firmware upgrade? Many of us have TV's or projectors that support both video forms. Apparently the reason for not including a feature is lack of demand, but perhaps you could use your contacts to let them know there are users who NEED this feature to fully use their PS3.

Seeing as my primary purchases are import concerts blu-rays, I'd love to watch them on my 100" projection screen with the PS3 rather than with my computer and monitor at the opposite end of the house.

If they were smart, they'd of course build a hybrid player without additional cost as a gesture of support for those that bought into a previous format, but, naturally, they won't...

Will be interesting to see what, if anything, distinguishes this player from others, save for the brand name on the front.

Sure, but the problem as you’ve noted is “lack of demand” which I think probably relegates something like that to *wish list* status esp. when I have them already investigating a more pressing need concerning an apparent current quirk with the 2.70 firmware in Region A PS3’s in how they handle region free discs that have 50Hz sections like menus and such.

However, I’ll see what I can do. No promises towards an outcome.
b.t.w., welcome to the forum.

I actually think that Jeff provides more of a profound service in regards to audio rather than video for most home theater enthusiasts as they don’t realize how far ‘off’ their audio is without Jeff’s intervention.

In general, I think the personal video tweaks consumers do prior to Jeff making a visit gets their video more in the optimal ballpark so Jeff doesn’t have to fiddle as much with that, except for going into the service menu of some display devices, which many people are incapable of doing....and probably rightly so, because if they don't know exactly what they're doing, they can do more harm than good.

Let the folks over at Sony know you appreciate this and maybe we'll see trailers more often, in addition to previews for other titles. Our thanks to whoever at the studio decided to include the trailer this time. People really do appreciate having them on the disc.
Please thank whoever is responsible for this if it's going to be a trend...

Sorry if old news here, but....

I read in my local paper a couple days ago that Lowry was restoring all the Apollo 11 moon landing and moon walk video.

They are forced to use copies that CBS and an Australian news agency had because NASA ERASED THE ORIGINALS BY MISTAKE and had no BACKUP COPIES.

What the heck??????

Squid, more shocking things have happened in the realm of film/video archiving, as I'm sure the esteemed Mr. Harris can tell you (if you have a few years to listen).

Sad, but true.

The most significant scientific event of the 20th century, and nobody is keeping track of it? NASA had been looking for the tapes for 3 years, and after being unable to find them, they assume they were erased.

I would be really surprised if there was a more shocking error. I would be interested to hear the competition though.

Nasa has had many problems with their old material - there simply isn't budget to keep it up - as a matter of fact the players that could use the footage were all scrapped ages ago.

This does a nice job of summarizing some of the highlights of the perilous life of records in a live by the fiscal year organization:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/sho...readid=3168568

I found the summary to be useful and it has a couple nice links - life at NASA seems to have really been harsh on archiving but I suppose they had plenty of problems paying for their active missions let alone trying to save the past (as important as it was).

For those interested in more details on the Apollo footage

And hello PM - I just wanted to come on over and see how the thread was doing its been ages - life in Q just doesn't seem the same now .

My second try at a post here for some reason my first didn't seem to make it.

Sucks, indeed, but it's a slightly more complicated story - they archived what they thought (incorrectly) at the time would be the proper material, namely, the version that actually broadcast, as opposed to the source sent from the moon before it got converted. Like keeping the uneditable PDF but not the word file (or, perhaps, the 8bit TIFF and not the RAW file).

Well, when I think of most significant events of the 20th century, D-Day comes to mind, so the loss of Robert Capa's D-Day photos would be in the running.

From the wiki page:

Quote:
His most famous work occurred on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) when he swam ashore with the second assault wave on Omaha Beach. He was armed with two Contax II cameras mounted with 50 mm lenses and several rolls of spare film. Capa took 106 pictures in the first couple of hours of the invasion. However, a staff member at Life in London made a mistake in the darkroom; he set the dryer too high and melted the emulsion in the negatives in three complete rolls and over half of a fourth roll. Only eight frames in total were recovered.[10] Capa never said a word to the London bureau chief about the loss of three and a half rolls of his D-Day landing film.[11]

Although a fifteen-year-old lab assistant named Dennis Banks was responsible for the accident, another account, now largely accepted as untrue but which gained widespread currency, blamed Larry Burrows, who worked in the lab not as a technician but as a "tea-boy".

Default slooooooooow motion Antelope

Anyone familiar with this camera? Sounds nifty.

Developed by German company Live Motion Concept, the Antelope High Speed Camera System offers an incredible 1500 fps frame rate, allowing for breathtaking slow-motion sequences with which you can have a closer look at how the MotoGP prototypes work and how the riders put their machines through their paces.

Fairings flexing under aerodynamic pressure, mechanical parts in movement, tyres deforming with changes in direction, heat haze and water spray... motogp.com brings you some exclusive never-seen-before hyper slow-motion footage via the Antelope High Speed Camera, which made its MotoGP debut last weekend at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany.

Penton, Sony gets 100% of the royalties from disc sales right? Would there be any online sources giving info about this, or at least validating that sony is the sole originator of the IP for the discs? I know that it is probably common knowledge but Ive tried to google it and havent found jack squat. Thanks
