Wellllllll............

AFAIK a 1080i/24 format is impossible. It will always be 1080i/60 (30fps).

Speaking of polls, how about one that would let the studios know saying something is a "2 disc Special Edition" is misleading when the second disc is just a Digital Copy...to me the label implies that there is another disc of special features.

I'm with you there. It's especially galling when, I expect, a lot of the folks that are interested in the special features (guys like us) are not interested in the digital copies, in the first place, and aren't afforded the option to buy a version without them.

I can never understand this intense hatred for digital copies. Worse comes to worse you have a lot of 2-disc cases to store extra DVD discs in that contain extras missing from the Blu

You are not being charged more for them, they would charge you the same amount no matter what. While Disney has certainly experimented with charging for them, it's pretty universal that theyre free.

I think the basic assumption when you buy a multi-disc special edition is that you are getting so much content they can't fit it onto a single disc. Now if they simply called it a regular edition "with free bonus digital copy" then there wouldn't be such a feeling of disappointment. Also when you go for blu-ray versions you really don't like seeing anything but blu-ray (yes I know they need to use standard def for the digital copy as most computers lack blu-ray) but still it leaves you feeling like you got some cruddy SD disk as half of your special edition package so clearly it wasn't special enough to justify multiple high def discs.

Just my 2cents on it.

I hope you're not reading 'intense hatred' into my comment. I have no hatred for digital copies; I just have no use for them, either.

Imagine a BD package that says "Special Edition" on it and you open it up and it contains a single disc and a stale hot dog. Not only do you not get the special features you were anticipating, you've got something else that you don't want which is being used to justify the "SE" moniker. It might gall a little, right? Nothing particularly against digital copies here, they're just kind of a victim of slightly misleading marketing.

Well how about this idea for a poll:

When I see a film theatrically I want to purchase what I saw on home video. Not some "Extended" edition or "Outrageous Unrated!" edition that comes without the original cut. Sony has gotten better about offering both options, and Universal seems to have the best track record so far. Lionsgate is pretty good (not perfect). Paramount, Warner and Disney on the other hand...

Since other studios notice these polls maybe they will take notice, I'm sure other people will prefer to have both cuts when possible.

Option 1: Both cuts seamlessly branched.
Option 2: Theatrical cut only.
Option 3: Unrated/Extended Cut only
Option 4: Both versions, 1 on each disc.

The "no option for purchasing without them" is a typical statement used by those who are convinced they're paying for something they don't want. If you don't care about them, and know they don't cost you money, then why would you care if you had that option or not?

You know doctor, that is one good reason to read the Blu-ray.com reviews…..
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/

before you purchase a Blu-ray. Those sneaky studio marketing folks can’t fool those reviewers once they open up the box and view the contents.

I just noticed the updated portion of that post mentioning a DTS-HD track. Hmmmm.

You mentioned Angels and Demons will likely be Dolby THD. Is Pelham 1,2,3 a possible DTS title?

By the way, please pass along kudos to those responsible for The International. I thought it looked and sounded fantastic. And the Guggenheim shootout sequence was excellent!

Yes, this is correct, 1080i/24 format is impossible on blu-ray - it is not part of blu-ray specs. Should someone do a lab experiment on 1080i(interlaced)/24, it will be flickery and will not be a pleasing picture. Blu-ray has 1080p/24 (p for progressive) mainly to reproduce movies in their native progressive frame rate.

Always use 1080p/24 for movies if your configuration allows, to reproduce a movie-like theater experience at home. This is a key advantage of blu-ray which you will not practically see on HDTV. HDTV transmissions are usually 1080i/60 (or 1080i/50).

Excellent news, and thank you for all your efforts on this front Penton.

Looking forward to future Sony releases that include the DTS codec.

I thought I'd explained that pretty well. It's just a little frustrating to see it there, taking the place of the features you were given the impression you would be getting. Not a big deal, but noticed.

Further, I'm not sure I quite agree with your premise that the digital copies don't cost me anything. I think the purpose of the digital copies is to imply value to be able to maintain a retail price-point, so in that sense, you're absolutely correct that if digital copies weren't included, the studios would still be putting something in that package to maintain the price-point. However, there would then also be the possibility that that something might be something I'd want. In this sense, it does cost me something.

And I do. You're right, education is the best defense and I should clarify that I, personally, have never fallen for this ploy. Further, I've never felt I've gotten a less than great deal from any Blu-ray disc I've ever purchased.

However, I do still have sympathy for the people who get suckered by this particular marketing approach. And I do think it's just a little bit underhanded. Not a big deal, but the market would be friendlier without it.

I don't like the digital copies because nearly all of those discs expire after a certain period of time. In order to be able to keep using that digital copy you're stuck with it wasting space on your computer's hard disc. That sucks.

Out of various digital copies being offered, I prefer the standard DVD discs like what were included with movies like Sleeping Beauty.
