I saw that. I am careful/selective about my "outbursts". Meaning, the 6'4", 250 lb. guy with a swastika tatoo on his neck gets a pass. Thankfully, the theater I frequent does not attract too many scary patrons, just rude ones.

Is there any kind of prevailing feeling among film studio people regarding shooting 3D versus converting to 3D? Seems like most of the upcoming 3D films aren't actually shot stereoscopically, is this just a temporary side-effect of Avatar, or is this something we'll keep seeing as the years go on?

It has affected this lady’s life so much, that it caused her to move within a couple miles of her place of employment and now all she deals with is the local traffic, which is very light, and doesn’t cause her any nausea leading to a vomiting episode, although she does tell me then when she receives her property tax bill in the mail every year, she feels like a good barf would be in order.

I don’t know what the Parallax Scoring Graph (Depth Script) looks like for Nightmare Before Christmas so I can’t help you there but, I would say that odds are AVATAR shouldn’t bother you if you sit far enough away from the screen. Initially, you’re going to probably have some filmmakers and stereographers who will desire to maximize the 3D effect with ‘aggressive’ 3D techniques, most likely in the horror genre but, as more experience is gained I think that everyone in the industry will come around to the notion of not risking the prolonged viability of the 3D format and cater more toward a subtle effect like Jim Cameron did. This notion will be expressed at the upcoming Summit in a few weeks…….
http://www.smpte.org/events/smpte_nab/2010DCS/

Ultimately, in the long run, it would be self-destructive for filmmakers, content providers and consumer electronics companies to market stuff knowingly, which can produce a deleterious effect to a significant portion of the ‘normal’ population such as a plethora of scenes which cut rapidly and repetitively in and out of the screen.

They’re not going to cut their own throats.
Is there any thought for "2D" glasses for 3D movies. My daughter and I go to 3D movies whenever possible, but my wife gets bad headaches and will not go with us. Does anyone manufacture glasses which have the same polarization in each lens for people with that problem?

You could easily make a pair from two standard pairs.

There is no consensus at this time because it is too early in the process.
The “prevailing feeling” is that until more ‘originally captured in 3D’ content gets into the production pipeline, there needs to be a way to increase the public’s awareness to the ‘3D experience’ and also, since 3D displays are becoming rapidly available, almost as we speak, there needs to be a legitimate way for buyers’ to reap the benefits of their purchases as soon as possible.

As to the success of this venture and whether it will continue as years go by, rather than being an initial stop-gap measure…..that remains to be seen and is of multi-factorial dependence, meaning it will depend on the quality of the conversion and the audience. I suspect that younger viewers who have never seen a certain motion picture in 2D before and harbor no fond memories of that presentation, if the conversion quality is good, then the experience will be fulfilling in 3D. Older cinephiles with ‘photographic memories’ of their 2D experience with a certain feature film may have a real inhibition problem here.

Personally, I barely remember Das Boot and I would look forward to seeing a good 3D conversion of that particular feature film. On the other hand, I don’t think I would be very interested in ever watching Lawrence of Arabia in 3D. My wife’s good friend and our next door neighbor whom I spoke about above, would probably rather have her toe nails yanked out than be forced to watch Titanic in 3D.

...let alone watching the 2D version of Titanic ... Maybe not toenails, maybe a fingernail or two?

Mark my words, nobody's going to be watching Avatar 10 years on, either...

Well, maybe after the sequel they will...sigh...

btw, Penton, did you see that TV report on the 100" Laserview TV with the Polarized glasses?

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?sec...ver&id=7013471

I did notice that they had a 3D version of Star Wars they were demoing...

Without naming names, curious if you've managed to view a copy of the 3D redux? There's lots of talk that the re-purposing to 3D is actually quite good (I personally fear it'll be way, way worse than a processed upmix to 5.1 from a stereo source), so I'd be curious if you have anything to say about that particular title.

Well, go ahead and think that but do you really think the huge gross was from strictly first time theatergoers?

Truth is people went to see it again and again, so I'd think it's more than likely Avatar will be remembered ten years from now, especially since it took 12 years to unseat the last box office champion.

Speaking of Das Boot, where's the BD?

I'd like a branching version with the original theatrical cut and the Special Edition. Then the miniseries version on a separate disc.

Didn't say nobody would remember it, just as we obviously still remember Titanic. However, would you not argue that the lustre of that previous film (ie., best picture winner) has diminished more than a little in the last decade, and that despite its box office receipts it's hardly a new classic that some had hoped for?

Avatar won't even have the legs of a Jurassic Park, a decade from now... (he said, talking out of his butt)

...and a 7.1 remix from the original source materials, no expense spared. It's a film made by sound....

I don't think Das Boot would do well in 3D even if it were native. The film is very flat looking to start with. It's very grainy naturally and was shot on the (relative) cheap (it's a glorified TV movie after all).

The 3D Star Wars was specifically produced for them, it shouldn't be taken as "a sign". Lucas hasn't actually done a lot with it yet. I've only heard recently that he's actually managed to get anything he's happy with

I'm not busting on it, Das Boot is an amazing film, but it would not, under the best of circumstances be a good 3D flick

Was already done back in '97 (for the directors cut), whole film was re-mixed from master elements in SDDS so an 8ch master exists...

SDDS 8 channel is Left, Left-Center, Center, Right-Center, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, LFE. Not the Left-back, center-back, right-back of current 7.1.

That said, I'd prefer if they leave the SE soundtrack as it is. 7.1 processing is gimmicky and your 7.1 receiver's surround modes basically duplicate what is done in the studio when they do a 7.1 "remix".
