Penton,
I just picked of Terrance Mallick's Days of Heaven and found a wonderful section "About the Transfer" within the booklet. Days of Heaven is presented in the filmakers'perfered aspect ratio of 1.78:1. On standard televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. On widescreen televisions, the image should fill the screen. Created from a 35mm interpositive struck from the 35mm A/B roll original negative, this high-definition digital transfer was supervised and approved by director Terrance Mallick, original camera operator and renowned cinematographer John Bailey, and editor Billy Weber. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, and wraps were manually removed using MTI's DRS system, flicker was removed with Pixel Farm's PFClean system; and Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction. The surround soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the original 4.1 magnetic track. Clicks, thumps, his, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube's integrated audio workstation. Telecine supervisiors: John Bailey, Lee Kline, Terrance Mallick, Maris Palazzola, Billy Weber Telecine colorist: Gregg Garvin/Modern Videofilm, Los Angeles Blu-ray disc mastering: Radius60, Los angeles I was wondering if we could see something similar from Sony for premier titles like Lawrence of Arabia? PS. Shark, yes you are getting predictable. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Dennis M; 03-31-2010 at 05:51 PM. Reason: Spelling |

That little line got my attention as well.
![]() Won't know how I feel about it till I get to watch it this weekend. But I have an feeling, considering who was involved, things should be fine. Plus RAH gave this transfer a ringing endorsement. Last edited by Dennis M; 03-31-2010 at 05:49 PM. |

That line has been in most if not all of the booklets. Transfers have not suffered because of it.

I wonder if it would help quality if the people involved in making BD's also got credit for their work. such as ... Video master by Mr. X Compression by Mr. Y DNR'd to death by Mr. Z (on orders from Executive A, and approved by Director B) ![]() I would hope that all people involved in production of a BD would take pride in their work and want to receive credit where credit is due. It might also make them think twice before turning up the dial. |

Well, I hear they’ve got your 24p upgrade for your 5D (with a fix for the audio bug), so if you guys ever get back together, we want to see a 2D clip from your 5D!

![]() And she's smarter than me. I’ve only had to sleep on the couch once, and that wasn’t really my fault as there was no “coveting” or “propositioning” going on. While in France with my wife attending a Tour de France from several years back, I was in the hotel bar and simply asking directions of a beautiful woman as to what was the best route to get out of town after the individual stage ended in order to beat the Tour de France support and media caravan to the next Stage, which if they get in front of you, can be a royal headache. It wasn’t my fault that everyone (apparently but me) in the bar “knew that she was a high-priced call girl”. All I’ll admit to is practicing my French…………..speaking. You know what I mean. Let’s further scare the hell out of Jeff K., Oliver K and others shall we?
![]() If you don’t want to read the whole article then just read the first paragraph and then scroll down to the paragraph with the guys in full dress wearing the sashes and pointed helmets while on horseback (it starts with the words “More significantly……”, and read that – http://blog.digitalcontentproducer.c...hines-for-fox/ |

^ He says you guys should Google this phrase- A completed quest for computing power and reliability... and look for something by Dell. ![]() It’s apparently some PDF file or Power Point presentation from what I understand. I must admit though, at first glance, I don’t quite get the association of that phrase and LOTR. Anyway, somebody find it and post it. Gotta run. |

![]() I am not so much shocked about additional care for the opticals but about the 2k scan for two prestiguous 65mm productions. That sounds very strange to me when recently 65mm productions that made it to Blu-Ray have moved up to an 8k scan, including South Pacific from Fox. Even Patton was scanned in 4k before the 'wizard' with the fancy software had a go at it. Fwiw I think that a 4k scan that gets reduced to BR resolution could already yield good results especially if 'only' a Blu-Ray is the intended end product but with 4k projection gaining a strong momentum in the markt I would prefer for work to be done in 8k to really extract all of the relevant detail from the OCN and to also allow for 4k projection where I expect 65mm originated movies to shine. BTW: I am still waiting for 4k to make it into consumer projectors with higher on/off CR and I have a little hope that the introduction of 3D to the home theater market might help with that ![]() |
